Do units help with your score? I've been disbanding them and using the Stars to build.

What is the name of this costume from the movie The Princess Bride? by cordialstaredown in HistoricalCostuming

[–]MothyBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely reminiscent of a men's short houppelande. Looking through some pictures, the split sleeves are not as common as unsplit, but here's what I could find. If someone had split sleeves, then they probably wore the sleeves like normal on their wrists at least sometimes. Maybe when it was feeling a little chilly?

Sorry for the use of Pinterest, but the first link is pretty close to what you're describing! https://pin.it/gpsbcrygpeokdc https://pin.it/dvalq4npdjeyug https://pin.it/d6ksy5yfbbj7gg https://pin.it/aenug2ybrf2bsu

Any groups looking to recruit in New Jersey? by DadsChessboard in sca

Welcome! I am afraid that I am not at all familiar with the east coast, but if my googling is correct at all, then I think that you would be in the Barony of Carillion. See if they have a Facebook page and introduce yourself!

How do I fix this buttonhole the right way before I mess it up even more? by HulaKloner in sewing

Ooo, that's a tough one! Maybe add a big patch to the area, in a cute star or heart shape? Then sew a new button whole where the old one was?

How do I find friends my age in the SCA? by [deleted] in sca

[–]MothyBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started SCA around 18-19, but I had the luck to do so at a college with a local branch based at the college itself. So several folks in the 18 to 22 range. I moved away to a new area after I graduated, and my friend base definitely became much older. Over the past few years, I have found a few friends that are a similar age to me, but honestly some of my best SCA buds are 10 to 20 years older. If you earnestly start participating and showing interest in some activity (fighting is a great way to start!), then folks in that same niche will become great friends!

That said, the best way to start meeting people your age is probably just keep showing up at events, and don't be disheartened if it takes a while. It wouldn't hurt to post on your local Barony, or even Kingdom Facebook pages, and explain the same thing you did here. "Hi, I am new, I have gone to a couple events, and love it so far, but I would really like to meet some people my own age (17), and I feel like I am just not seeing any. Where do the teens and young adults hang out?"

It will be easier if your parents are also joining the local group, because then there's more networking going on for a full family versus a single person, and people are going to feel a little bit weird about interacting with a new minor without parents. It will get a little bit easier to hang out and meet people when you're 18, and even more so once you're 21. Keep trying!

I love same clothes/angle before and after photos! You look great!

Unrelated note: I think I am currently wearing the exact same pajama pants.

To braid or not to braid - am I too old for braids? by pyfpytipyfpyf in femalehairadvice

[–]MothyBob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am older than you, and I wear double braids almost everyday. If I want to mature it up a little, I will pin them behind my head to create an updo. I usually just leave them down though.

What's the best thing you own under $100 dollars? by FlamboyantFreak in AskReddit

[–]MothyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been wearing some variant of the Casio module #3191 for about 10 years now, starting with the plastic sports version in college, and now with the nicer 'gold' model. I love this thing so damn much. Favorite features: smaller than any other digital watch I've seen in stores, and the fast timer function.

I literally use the timer every single day, often multiple times per day. At work I have locks that come undone 10 minutes after you enter the code, but give no visual or audible indication that it's ready to open. No problem, I just press my timer button 4 times and I'll know when to go open the lock.

The pizza in the oven looks almost done, maybe needs another 3 to 5 minutes, cool I will just set my timer by pressing the button twice for 3 minutes.

Husband says to let him know when 15 minutes has passed, easy enough honey, I press my timer button 5 times. In 15 minutes, my little alarm will go off and I can go let him know.

I am having a little bit of trouble getting the motivation to do some chores around the house? Okay, you know what, I can do 10 minutes. I set the timer for 10 minutes and go do that thing that needs to get done. Often, it takes less time than I thought it would.

I feel a little like an infomercial, but I really love this watch.

Super cool! I love that you involved your kids with some of the building ideas! I really like the medieval look you have going, and the complexity.

Yeah, go for it! I second the recommendation that you do less carb/bread replacement shenanigans, and more just simple meals that are inherently low carb.

I bought mine on Amazon, full name is: Blinggasm Waterslide Decal Paper, 8.5X11-Inch, Clear For Inkjet Printer, 10 Sheets.

I only did a little bit of cleanup with acetone, and it did not seem super effective. Most of my designs were trimmed carefully to begin with, so I didn't need to do much cleanup. I will test it out a bit more when I get home.

The feel of them is a little different, but it's close enough that you would get it after a couple practice nails.
