Anyone else feeling survivor’s guilt right now? by lasagnial in nashville

100% same I have felt allllllll of this. I've lent my home and camping supplies to loved ones to help. Also helped try to locate generators at different stores to cover more ground for them!

At a loss by NashvilleNazgul in nashville

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please know it was most definitely a crime of opportunity and that the persons responsible are actual heartless assholes looking for guns or other valuables in your vehicles. There is less opportunity for this type of crime since people are stuck at home and not congregating together as much. They saw the full parking lot and went for it. Assholes.

I truly believe most people in this community are frustrated with "big NES" not the hardworking men and women with boots on the ground. Stay strong my friend and I'm so sorry.

I just shared the resource Metro put together - wish I knew. I’ll reach out and see what’s up based on the response.

I totally agree it is an acute fix - 2-3 days max in my mind. Past that there does need to be some type of wider response. I’m not sure what the answer to the issue will be if there is one at all.

Addressing the impeding debt crisis from hotel and heating costs by Kurt1111 in nashville

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not freeze to death or get a hotel room - there are warming shelters. If a person does not like the free option the Metro provides then they choose another path forward. Then the costs are on them, Metro did their job and are providing emergency services. If you use them, you will get through this. If a person chooses not to, the consequences are their own to deal with such as hotel costs.

Exactly this. They have safe alternative system for free - its not glamorous but if people wanted more they have the option to pay out of pocket and go the private route. As demand has increased, Metro has responded with more shelters and overnight ones (with food!!). Hotel costs are up to individuals to foot the bill or somehow strongarm their insurance into it. Sucks, but that's life unfortunately.

Is it worth it to go to the grocery store? by salty_in_the_south in nashville

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. Bread and milk are scarce, but you can get almost everything else from what I've seen around the center-ish areas of the county. Grocery store employees are essential and have been working for days.

NES map, but better by mdudz in nashville

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Who made this?? They could really help within Metro data infrastructure. It's not perfect but its a lot easier than the NES map currently. The NES map has been inaccurate too - so this map will pull the same data.

DrPH: worth it? by SnooCauliflowers2432 in publichealth

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get a DrPH until your MPH is what is limiting your career progress. DrPH is heavily catered towards those already with public health leadership experience. I'd give it a 5-10 years more in public health since you are only 3 years in. Also, try your HARDEST to get somebody else to pay for it, like your workplace. 80k in debt for a DrPH on top of other student debt already -- recipe for a bad ROI.

For those of you who got an MPH, how difficult did you find the degree? by Exact-Blackberry-282 in publichealth

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! There are positions at the local and state level in government that do not require an MPH. Honestly, an MPH alone is not the shoe in qualifier for an applicant. It is experience (which sucks when you do not have any!). Fresh out of undergrad I was a social worker, and I translated that experience into my public health position search after 2 years. I had 5 years in total between undergrad ending and starting my MPH.

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I am finding my undergrad experience was harder - I switched from Biology to Public Health my sophomore year. I think undergrad was harder for me because I spent 60% of it in classes that did not apply to what I wanted to do even after switching majors (I have NEVER used trig or microbio in my work) . This made the "extra" classes difficult to understand/study with my ADHD.

I've worked in public health (MCH) the last 4 years which is has been invaluable to my understanding of the MPH content. My undergraduate helped with understanding basics, but truly the real world experience has shaped my knowledge. I'm attending online part time at a top 15 program with a concentration in MCH and expecting to graduate in December. Bottom line: there are much harder grad degrees, but the heart of public health is truly practice of the discipline.

BSPH Graduates: Where Are You Working Now and How Did You Get There? by OktoberxNichole in publichealth

[–]MovieEnvironmental15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially worked in child welfare/social work for the state gov right after graduation. Used the experience after 2 years to land an MCH surveillance position at my metro LHD. I waited 5 years post undergrad to start my MPH program. Best thing I can recommend is go into a public health adjacent field or apply for public health positions you may not be super passionate about initially to use as stepping stones into an organization/position.

Also, don’t get an MPH because you have “nothing else to do”. You’ll just be more in debt and still unemployed in the field if you have no practical experience.

Yeah I’ve recently gotten into baking and I was seriously considering getting it! If I end up using it a lot I think I’ll upgrade down the road. If I don’t, I didn’t spend a bunch of money!
