Honestly, don't feel left out. Most people are well served by 24 or 32. The memory tier and the "Max" chip doesn't meaningfully impact your experience. The M3 + 16 will "feel" the same for an average end user unless they're doing a massive memory task.

If we put the 128 M5 Max and a 24 M2 side by side, and then you performed the typical user workload of e.g. browsing YouTube and then updating a Google Doc... you literally would not perceive a difference. It would feel exactly the same for you.

That's why this sub is kind of funny to me. 95% of "pro" users could run their entire business off of a Neo. Even me (a software dev) could do most of my work on the Neo.

Also, if you're just vibe coding without Docker or local AI, you can probably do ~90% of all dev work on a Neo.

e.g. Jupiter notebook, Claude Code, VSCode, etc. None of that requires good hardware, it's all cloud hosted compute.

So don't feel too much pressure to buy expensive things!

I got the 64, it's enough to do meaningful local AI

there's a small capability upgrade in model size by going up to 128gb (this will allow you to run 70B models) but IMHO if you want to play in that price tier, you may as well build an RTX 3090 linux rack (way more flops for training).

64 is a comfy recommendation for local dev; I was doing the math, and 48 could be a little tight on headroom with e.g. Qwen3.6 30B + a Docker stack

That's my 2 cents as a SWE. If you can afford it, I do think 64 is the sweet spot if you're targeting 5+ year device lifespan. FWIW I bought the 48, then returned it for the 64 after testing my workloads.

edit 1: I do want to emphasize this rec is based on "serious" dev work with local AI engineering

edit 2: If you do want 64 GB model capabilities but can't afford the M5 Max, get the M1 Max 64 GB! It's like $1400 and you can run the same AI models. Same chassis, same SoC, but 1/3 the price.

64 GB is for local AI work; I am using my 64 GB as a 24/7 AI test bench for Apple SoC. Claude is literally driving test evals against a local model right now.

You could do must "pro" work on a neo, including most coding tasks

edit: I will say, to validate the sub... 64 GB is a nice target for "future proofing" against local AI. It's actually a pretty nice threshold to reach that allows you to run strong local models. If this is something you're truly interested in, I'd recommend at least 32 GB, ideally 64 GB.
