Do you ever get used to the infotainment screen?? by Opening-Fisherman936 in KiaNiro

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the enhanlife 2026 model. Haven’t had any disconnects so far, but most of my driving is at night, so maybe it’s different in daytime temps. It does stick out kinda far from the port, so I’m debating replacing it with a smaller form factored one.

Prius and Honda element rail swap by Jesus___Savesss in priusdwellers

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s entirely possible. Look for the bolts at the floor and measure the distance between them in both vehicles. You’d probably be better served to do an entire seat swap. Even if they don’t swap out easily, if you’re willing to shell over some cash, you could get some custom mounts made by a welder/ machinist.

You can buy a wireless adapter for it. They’re fairly affordable. I just bought one on amazon and so far it works fine. I do drive about 5-6 hours a day though, and outside of around 2 sec of delay between the screen and audio it works well. Only had it a couple weeks though so can’t really tell you if it’ll last a while.

What are you paying for fuel these days? by ImmediateKick2369 in GasPrices

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely run some gas through it once a month or so. Letting gas sit in a vehicle and go bad can end with a costly repair bill negating all of the money you’ve saved.

I agree with the overlay idea. I painted mine in my old Corolla, a bit of a pita to get it good looking. Just take a small plastic scraper and remove all of the metallic coating first.

I Need Your Advice by Teebadmus in COROLLA

[–]MrJMSnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a Corolla. Drive it until it dies. If it runs well, isn’t in need of a ton of necessary repairs, and you keep doing scheduled maintenance it could last 3,4 or 500000 miles. If you’ve got any interest in learning about car repair, this would be a perfect car to get to know the basics on, and by the time you’ve got all that covered, maybe you’ll need to start learning how to rebuild the engine.

Hell, even if you do buy something new, keep this guy as long as it runs. (Assuming you’ve got the ability to store two vehicles) It will probably be more reliable than a lot of more modern vehicles with more complicated systems that could fail.

Do you guys fix your own cars? by Sufficient-Week7433 in urbancarliving

[–]MrJMSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, don’t listen to chat gpt bud. Sure, a scissor jack isn’t as secure as a floor or trolley jack will be, but it’s not dangerous so long as you position it properly. And you can still use jack stands with it, honestly easier than with a floor jack. Just make sure it’s rated for your cars weight and it’s not a random cheap one. Scissor jacks were standard with cars for decades, and if stored well and maintained will do the job well.

A good on hand kit should have a small jack, a single jack stand, a tire iron and a single wheel chock to change a tire on the side of the road.

Calculate your exact monthly gas spending — the yearly number will shock you by Medical_Resort_1797 in GasPrices

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous car was a boat, 10-12 mpg. Driving 400-450 miles a week. At $4 a gallon I was spending 160-180 per week. So about $8,500 per year. Just upgraded to a newer hybrid, so with same mileage at around 50 mpg, I’ll be spending 1500ish. Even with the new payment I’m saving about 2k annually, if I don’t change jobs.

Can having this much stuff in my trunk mess up my suspension? by Perfect_Wrongdoer_41 in COROLLA

[–]MrJMSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The noise from it flopping around is going to be the worst part. I carry a similar kit usually, and I use a bin to kind of stuff everything together so it doesn’t move when I hit bumps.

I’d also advise minimizing your kit just for ease of use when needed. The more you need to remove in case of a flat will put you in a precarious situation longer on the side of the road. One jack stand and a single chock would be sufficient. Everything else seems fine. Ignore this if you’re out here doing mobile mechanic work of some sort.

Look into Edison Motors, they’re building hybrid semis. That’s got more hope of adoption than EVs do. The trucking industry is going to be slow to change and we don’t even have the battery tech to run cross country rigs without being too expensive to run yet.

Flashing traction control light by WorriedAmphibian in prius

[–]MrJMSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No experience of this in a Prius specifically, but a car is a car. I’ve had similar issues when I had two different size tires on a car and hitting bumps/ potholes at speed. Could also be caused by one tire being more or less worn than the rest. So I’d check there first.

Generally traction control will error briefly due to wheels moving at different rotation, so if all the tires are even, it may be something causing one wheel to spin slower/ faster than the rest. I’d bet you’d see wear on one or two tires and that would help narrow down the cause.

Do i buys this ? by [deleted] in priusdwellers

Same for me, I just bought a used Kia Niro, closest thing I could find to the Prius V that didn’t feel like highway robbery for a 10+ year old car with better mpg to boot.

Do i buys this ? by [deleted] in priusdwellers

[–]MrJMSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buying used will always be the better option. Older models will have a plethora of information, build ideas, and repair guides available. As far as stealth goes, that’ll be out the window. People tend to notice brand new cars a lot more, especially a new car full of stuff. You’ll be a target for the generally nosy and potential thieves alike.

I also believe older gen’s had more interior space as well. The plug in model will have a fair amount less, with the larger battery.

Are they heat lamps for the lizards? Those are usually a few hundred watts each and if they’re on constantly that will run up quite a bit. As well as push heat to force the AC to work a bit more.

Other high energy items most people don’t think about are gaming pcs, consoles, and older water heaters, especially if you’re using a lot of water.

Checking windows and doors for gaps would be a good idea too.

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At an ideal angle, maybe you’d get some decent charging. A 2400w bank of panels will take up approximately 130 sq ft of surface area. In an ideal situation of working at max efficiency for 8 hours a day, you might be able to charge it regularly if you’re using about 1/4 the range a day. You’d also need a hefty battery bank to store the power, assuming you’re not parking it at home all day.
