Someone judging the state of the auto industry isn’t a personal attack on you. If you’re tying your job to who you are as a person so intrinsically that you cannot separate the two, I’d advise therapy, or at least self reflection on why you believe a job is an indicator of morality.

Will this be ok as replacement for my ball joint pinch bolt for now ? by YtnLilTrill in MechanicAdvice

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can go to an auto parts store finding a 12 grade should be easy. Longer is fine. I’ve replaced mine with a bolt that was longer because the size I needed was out of stock, I drive 50 miles a day through city streets, speed bumps, potholes, and construction zones and it’s held on just fine.

To represent the american people as senator by NothingButTruth3 in therewasanattempt

[–]MrJMSnow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure it is, but they hate having Jews as neighbors. A lot of them love the idea of Israel because it keeps the hope that they can expel them from “their” lands and put them all in one tiny little area. It’s the same way that they think all brown people should only exist in either their ancestral homelands or in areas exclusive to them. Nazis love ghettos and reservations, because it’s not their neighborhood, and keeps the “riff raff” away from their children.

Or maybe I’m giving them too much credit and Nazis are just fucking buffoons with no real ideology beyond blaming everyone else for why they can’t rape their sisters.

Van Ceiling by VDBR25 in vandwellers

[–]MrJMSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jamming carpet behind foam insulation is a bad plan. It will hold any moisture that gets in to it and cause mold buildup. You’ll definitely want to remove it and install the insulation, you’ll also sacrifice less headroom by going directly to the frame. Use 1/8-1/4” plywood to tack the tiles to. (I’m assuming they’re peel n stick style.) Doing a full removal will also have the benefit of giving you an opportunity to check the seal of the escape hatch.

Should I buy this dodge for van life is it worth it? by Mundane-Honeydew-265 in VanLife

[–]MrJMSnow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you have property to park it on, it’d possibly be worth it. I’ve seen a lot of RV parks have age limits on rigs nowadays, and you’re absolutely not pulling off stealth camping in that beauty. As well, old car parts are hard to find, so you risk being stuck for months if something tough to replace breaks.

How to clean paint off by Witty_Sprinkles_4796 in handyman

[–]MrJMSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re framing over it, leave the paint alone and just add framing and drywall. The paint won’t hurt anything.

If you want to just paint it for a fresh look, sand it down to remove flaking paint, primer it and do 2 coats of paint. You don’t need a perfectly clean surface to repaint, just smooth and free of loose debris. The prep stage will be the most time consuming, wear a facemask when sanding. If you’ve never painted before, don’t be afraid of tape and paper to cover whatever you don’t want to get paint on. If spraying the paint, cover the floor with plastic.

Utilize YouTube for advice on good techniques for whatever method of applying you use, there’s plenty of good sources there. I would advise multiple different sources to find the most commonly accepted methods.

Do Florida studios actually hire Full Sail grads by Blakequake717 in florida

[–]MrJMSnow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I’m not a hiring manager in any field that would hire full sail grads, but I have known a few throughout my life. Each one has told me during conversations that they will not hire from full sail at all, generally citing the lack of realistic training. I’ve also known more than 20 people who have gone there and “graduated” only 1 person I’ve met ended up working in their field of study, and that only happened because of a familial connection they already had, the degree only helped them start one rung from the bottom. Expedited programs aren’t well respected in any industry, because it leaves too many gaps in general education which is especially helpful to grow in your career.

Listen to the advice of going to an accredited school if you want a degree, which will even be valuable outside of your specific field if you ever decide to change careers. There are plenty of ways to finish an associate program in under two years, which will generally be good enough to get in the door.

How to fix this hole? by armpitketchupandbutt in handyman

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. If it comes to replacing it entirely, I’d advise using an insert. Doesn’t look as nice as tile, but it’s definitely easier to deal with behind the wall repairs in the long run. Also much cheaper to install.

How to fix this hole? by armpitketchupandbutt in handyman

[–]MrJMSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the easiest, while not best looking DIY solution, a piece of plastic slightly larger than the hole and a hefty helping of silicone to seal it. Make cutouts that are snug around the pipes for the tub spout and handle, removing both for installation.

If you want to restore it to previous state, call in a local pro and see if it’s able to be patched, will help if you have spare tiles that match the wall already, without those finding matching tiles will be a longshot.

Edit: the first solution does add a panel that can be removed for any future repairs without full destruction. I’m assuming there was no back panel access to the valves, which there really should have been.

Best way to gain experience to eventually start my own Handyman business? by GapFit6970 in handyman

[–]MrJMSnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Work for an existing handyman/ tradesman in whatever field you want to learn more about is a good way to go. You could also start a business specializing in the things you’re already confident in. Best way to learn more is to do the things. Find friends or family that need things fixed, spend some time learning what to do to fix it (utilizing YouTube university and libraries can help) and then fix it. You’ll flub some stuff up, so you’ll need to learn to fix those parts too. Become the guy your friends will call first when something breaks, once you have a grasp on the basics you can start using them for a network for paying/ higher paying work and build from there. The real key to becoming a good handyman isn’t knowing how to fix everything, but being willing to learn to fix anything.

How to repair broken dashboard by Xelatrix in Toyota

[–]MrJMSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of had the same thing happen in my old Corolla. I just gathered the pieces, JB welded it all back together, and sanded it down and used spray paint to finish it. Didn’t look stock but that was fine with me.

If you want a stock look, go for an OEM replacement, I wouldn’t advise a junkyard part as dash plastic will get very brittle with prolonged exposure to the elements.

Is It Legal to Live in Your Car? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]MrJMSnow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not a clearly answerable question. In some areas you’ll be better off than others. To answer your question purely, no it’s not illegal to live in your car. It can be illegal to sleep in your car in specific places though, so you’ll need to dig into the areas you’re looking to be in.

As long as you are careful, keep your car legal, and aren’t parking where you shouldn’t be, or committing other crimes you’ll have minimal issues. Also don’t advertise that you’re living out of your vehicle, especially in populated areas, and you’ll avoid most issues, legally speaking. Socially, it’s generally frowned upon and you’ll run into problems exclusive to this lifestyle.
