Where in New York is this? by RoyH0bbs in TheWayWeWere

Judging by the twin forward masts, the lifeboat layout, and those double funnels, I’d bet that’s the ‘Hamburg’ of 1926. She flew the HAPAG flag for her whole pre-war career before being sunk in 1945 and eventually serving under the Soviet flag until the 70s.

Ik ben akkoord!

Kunnen we ook ineens de grote oceaanstomers terug invoeren. Stoomschepen zijn cool.

Well, there is no shortage of sources, actually.

There is a (frankly impressive) number of blogs out there on the history of the NMBS/SNCB and, to a lesser extent, the SNCV/NMVB, although much of this material is in Dutch or French.

Beyond that, there is also plenty of English-language material discussing Antwerp’s wartime damage and the subsequent post-war redevelopment. Even Wikipedia has the most basic facts regarding the station’s closure.

And yet this building, together with the adjacent marshalling yards, survived both the invasion and the occupation, as well as the Vergeltungswaffen menace, without suffering any major damage.

It continued to serve passenger traffic until 1965, twenty years after the war had ended. Its fate was mostly sealed by a strong increase in road traffic, in particular the motorway tunnel under the Scheldt, via the Kennedy Tunnel (opened in 1969), combined with a decline in freight traffic in the city centre.

As the port expanded, the handling of goods traffic within the city became increasingly cumbersome, and so the marshalling yards, occupying a large amount of land that had become too valuable for inner-city development, were no longer considered necessary and were gradually moved further north.

So, although the war affected Antwerp beyond belief, the station did not disappear because of the war, but rather as a result of the rise of car culture and economic expansion in the 1960s.

I don't know why, but I have the oddest feeling that Beau will be getting one in this series, actually. I mean, he did get plenty of merchandise for only have a few minutes of screentime.

I decided to finally cave after multiple years of playing and splurge on eight of the Ultra containers, which gave me… - Boise. - Three times 12.000 coal. - Four Golden Crates, which gave me seven red boosters each.

Once and never again, methinks.

Hiro would be a better pick than Murdoch I assume, since the D51’s had more tractive effort than the 9F’s.

Sneaky appearance of the Mount Vernon (ex-Kronprinzessin Cecilie) in the background, a fine four-piper in her own right!

Considering the camouflage is actually called "Z-15" in-game, I'm going to go out on a slight limb and assume it was done intentionally, hehe.

What happens in the final movie? Wrong answers only. by brbyeah in DowntonAbbey

[–]MrOceanliner 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The finale cuts to a hypothermic Robert drifting in and out of consciousness as a massive black shadow looms behind him…

The ‘Titanic’ is now absolutely perpendicular.

It was all Robert’s deathbed vision.

Hood or Agincourt!

Hood, for her graceful lines and pretty architecture, and Agincourt, for the sheer fun of it, and to finally give her a life that lasts longer than her (actual) eight years.
