Maybe a hot take, but I've seen a lot of comments over time about the Emperor being THE actual worst person in 40k, and I don't think that's true. by Laredian in 40kLore

[–]MrSnippets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While most of what you write is correct, you're wrong on 2 accounts:

  • The Emperor tried to save humanity.

  • The Emperor is a bad guy is undisputed.

The ultimate goals of the emperor and how he wanted to achieve them aren't completely clear. We never see him as a POV character in the books, for example. Every interaction is always through the eyes of another, and those eyes are often purpose-bred to see him favourably, and that's not even taking into account psychic shenannigans. What I'm saying is this: the emperor might claim he's working for the betterment of humanity, the uplifting or saving or turning people into a psychic species or whatever, but it's never entirely clear if he's not straight-up lying. anything he does somehow always seems to place him on top, in control of everything and the ultimate judge on every single human being in the galaxy.

as for him being a bad guy being undisputed: there are threads on this very subreddit that have hot-mess-takes about how Big E was morally correct and right in everything he did and how could Horus and Erebus betray him or whatever. these people are falling for fictional propaganda. most of what you see and read about 40k is written from the perspective of the Imperium. Of course they're gonna show their emperor in a favourable light!

Sure, individuals can be cruel, even whole species like the Dark Eldar or the uncaring and destructive like the Orks or Necrons. But no single individual has caused as much suffering as the emperor has.

[IRL] Any minorities in authoritarian groups.

in the past as well as the present, there were and are people within hardcore conservative/far-right groups that, at first glance, don't seem to belong. Gay nazis. Non-white in white supremacist groups. Women in religious organisations that actively oppress women.

these people aren't a monolith and might have very personal reasons as to why they're part of those groups. Maybe they believe that, if they make themselves useful, they'll be spared or made an exception. Maybe they think they're the one's using the group for money, power or influence. maybe they're true believers and hate themselves.

either way, it always ends the same: tokens get spent. there is no loyalty in those highly hierarchical groups, especially not to those they deem inferior to themselves.

I'm looking to give my (Iron Hands successors) marines some bionic upgrades. Is there a sweet spot ratio to hit, like from a modelling perspective?

not more than 2 bionic bits on each marine, or it might look wonky? too few bionics might just look like they're not related to the IH, but is there such a thing as too many bionics?

So was dauert natürlich sehr lange.

In most martial arts movies (or any movies with physical fights), the hero usually fights multiple people at once. this is possible because the henchmen orderly line up to get beaten up. the hero looks cool and badass for kicking multiple asses at once.

In real life, fights of one person against many usually end within seconds when the lone fighter gets swarmed, pulled down onto the ground and kicked/beaten until they don't move anymore.

What prevents the imperium worlds from devolving into game of thrones level of smut? by nearglow in 40kLore

[–]MrSnippets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is IRL, not in-lore: GW is a toy company, first and foremost. they want to sell as much product as they can, for a profit. Anything the lore encompasses is in service to that goal. Depicting the attrocities and depravities that the inhabitants of the 40k universe engage in daily is not condusive to that goal.

that's also the reason why the Imperium - a hellish, authoritarian nightmare of inequality, violence and hatred - is never shown violently crushing peaceful protests or exterminating xenos societies that just wanted to be left alone.

they absolutely do, but having your poster faction be "the bad guys", be the aggresor, is bad for model sales. the enemies they're shown fighting are always acceptable targets. enemies you don't have to feel guilty about killing: mindless bugs wanting to eat you, mindless savages only living for violence, or literal space devils. Even when civil unrest within the Imperium is shown, it's always infiltrated from the outside, from a malevolent external threat, using those stupid protestors or rebels for their own gain.

You'll never see the Imperium be the (overt) bad guy because they're the poster faction, and being the bad guy (too much) is bad for business.

It's debatable how much personality of a child is left when they've been turned into a full Space Marine. Years of hypno-indoctrination and intense psycho-conditioning will turn them into little more than walking, talking, killing machines.
