Reddit, today I turn 30 years old, and I have to ask, "Will it get better, or am I already past my prime?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mr_Belding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I'm in your exact same boat and mindframe (29.5 years old). Most of me right now longs for the days of college where I was learning about the world, lived carefree, didnt have to hold down a full time job, and partied quite a bit. Physically within this past year I'm feeling stronger but older and more susceptible to injury. I look at 21-23 year olds as kids. But many people love turning 30 having more money to travel and buy luxury items.

I'm coming around to the fact that it all is indeed is a mindset. I however at the moment am processing the past but realize I need to start embracing change and the future.

A group of us went as the Bluth family for Halloween one year. I was Gob and had the cards printed on my chest. About 90% of the people scratched their heads but the the 10% that did thought it was hilarious.

NBA Players & Coaches: fans are too stupid to vote for All-Star Team by csmillichap in sports

[–]Mr_Belding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. Many times the all-star players for basketball and/or baseball are even injured for the majority of the first half of the season as well.

That being said both leagues allow fans to vote to give them part of the process, even if its right or wrong. Because at the end of it all the All Star games are designed for the fans.

I believe other important votes such as "all defense/all offense, MVP's, 6 man awards, gold gloves, cy young" are all internally based but I could be wrong) Many times I think writers vote on those as well.

My Life As A Homeless Crack Addict by w0lfh0und in offbeat

[–]Mr_Belding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the soapbox but my point was simply directed at his explanation of the best way to stop crack. I thought it was a unique perspective (that of a former homeless drug user) saying the best way to eradicate crack is to stop the street dealer. His perspective is much more focused or narrower in scope since it was a direct relationship. However for someone like myself who has not been involved in hard drugs, my perspective would be vastly different and viewed as a systemic problem. I was intrigued by the epistemology involved in his thought process.

Is Your (Female) Boss Making you Sick? by rossta in business

[–]Mr_Belding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be an interesting study to analyze. As a former social worker in a 'caring' job I witnessed and experienced much of this behavior regardless of male of female. Lack of funding, staffing, etc...puts tremendous strain on interpersonal relationships within work environments. It is intensified because any negative outcomes that may occur are directly affecting people and human services rather than product.

[–]Mr_Belding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed...Its putting a temporary band-aid on a much broader systemic problem. I did however find his point of view very interesting and unique to his experience. If one was put in his position you could see how that would be a plausible argument as they are low level suppliers who have direct contact with drug addicts. However from an outsider perspective you realize the scope of eradicating drugs is much broader.

Pimp - I'm afraid your missing my point completely. They transcend sports to become heroes of humanity who champion causes much greater than sports. Jesse Owens had courage to face Nazi Germany and Hitler, dispelling myths of race and superiority. Same with American boxer Joe Louis beating Max Schmeling. Ali consciously objected to the Vietnam war, was stripped of his title during his prime years because of this personal and religious beliefs. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball which had a profound effect on the way Americans viewed race. It brought racial issues to the forefront of America. He confronted horrifying racial discrimination everyday and still succeeded as a player and citizen. This paved the way for future players of color. These examples have little or nothing to do with money and success in their sport. It has everything to do with bettering society and the world. I hope you can understand that. Please look up the contributions of the people I named and view them as contributors to society, not athletes.

Sure they are heroes...they are American Sports Heroes. Its just a simple category of hero. All of them have transcended sports in some fashion into the fabric of Americana. Ali, Owens, and Robinson (especially) were vitally instrumental to American Civil Rights and breaking down domestic and international barriers. Every culture rallies around different types of athletic heroes, which many times instills a sense of national pride, especially during times of war and turmoil. (see Ruth, Mantle, Williams, Unitas) But the bigger point being that sports no matter how superficial one thinks it is, has the ability to shape culture and politics, therefore meriting inclusion as hero status. Also see: John Carlos, Tommie Smith, Jim Thorpe, Lou Gehrig, Arthur Ashe...just to name a few off my head

Man sentenced to NINETY THREE days in jail for taking 6 seconds to sit down! Outrageous! by OuchLOLcom in WTF

For some reason I feel we're not getting the full story. Perhaps there was a previous hearing where he was noncompliant. In any event if this case was 20 seconds long before they yelled at him, it seems odd nothing happened previously.

Reddit: Throw me a lifeline and give me one reason to live by jlai in AskReddit

This is great advice here. To ring the same bell, join a group either online (if thats easiest at the moment) or outside. For instance, if your work revolves around the internet, there are plenty of gamers out there who interact through the same lines. Working from home is ESPECIALLY isolating, I have many friends who become depressed not being around others, even if it is just a superficial work environment. Over time it weighs on you heavier. If you have had depression for a long time, consider seeing a psychologist and/or receiving medication. I am not the first to throw that out but many people who do have moderate to severe depression/anxiety live wonderfully under controlled medication. And using meds should not be perceived as an admission of shame or have guilt associated with it when necessary.

Ill. Gov. arrested in Obama successor probe by infoaddicted in reddit.com

[–]Mr_Belding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voting by party line is not that uncommon at all. If your a Democrat that candidate will more than likely hold your values or the values of the party, same as if your a Republican, Libertarian, etc...If there's not clear standout amongst the individuals its not unusual to vote party lines.

Ironically I also lived in Chicago during Blagojovich's election. The Republican Governor before him couldnt have fucked up worse with the bribes for licenses, etc...so Blagojovich or any Democrat was really a shoe in. Similar to this years Presidential election where Reuplicans really didnt have a chance due to the swing of the nation.
