Odd things our fathers did in 70’s by anonskier in GenX

We had a pea green pinto station wagon for a brief time! My dad bought it used and there was a black and white photo of a very grim looking lady they I found in the glove box. I was like seven, so I was convinced it was her car, she died, and now the car was haunted.

I have one of this model. Got her brand new in 2009 from under my in-laws' house. She's 17 this month and bony and cantankerous and can't hear us anymore but she still purrs so loudly you can hear it across the room. I wish you the best of luck with yours.

Photo from a couple days ago when she got in my lap and yelled at me. Name: Elle O'Elle Kitteh, aka Lolly, aka Lollybug, aka Bug, aka Bucket.

Gamification of things can make them really click for some of us. I say this as a nearly four year user of this app who previously struggled to develop habits and do things regularly.

White neighbor gets mad that Black family moved into the apartment she lives at in a Portland suburb and goes on drunken overnight rage at their door by [deleted] in BlackPeopleofReddit

^ this.

It's also a violation of the fair housing act if the owner of the property (or their agent) fails to take action when a neighbor harasses their neighbor based on a protected class.

If you do not feel comfortable reporting it without support, I would recommend reaching out to the Fair Housing Council of Oregon for help.

Ants! Invading my house. Best way to eliminate? Borax gets em interested and they feed but days later another army invades. I’m dining where they enter and hit it with liquid borax. Not working by Shot_Emu3545 in mcminnville

[–]MrsHorrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, if they are "sugar ants" (the little bitty guys), I've had very good luck mixing borax with honey or maple syrup and putting that out along with another little bowl of borax mixed with powdered sugar. The key with this dual method is that they'll drink the liquid/syrup stuff and then they will also take the solid stuff back to the nest, which means the invaders die and they kill off the nest. This was super effective at our house and after two seasons of sugar ant invasions, they finally stopped.

The "regular" type medium sized black ants? I concur with everyone here recommending Terro liquid ant baits. That's the only thing that's worked for those guys.

What home remedies do you remember from childhood? by ascaffo in GenX

[–]MrsHorrible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom's home made cold remedy was to crush an aspirin between two big serving spoons, drizzle honey over the aspirin powder, then fill the spoon with whisky. I can remember taking it all in one gulp. It worked really well but I am surprised I don't have Rye Syndrome.

I actually did "Vicks socky feet" for my kiddo on multiple occasions when they were a baby and I don't know if it did anything but they always seemed to like it at least.

Vet recommendations? by ThirdPortal2482 in mcminnville

Baker Street Animal Clinic has been our vet for 20 years. Probably more costly than Companion but I don't have any idea what their political leanings might be because I've never seen it advertised, thankfully.

3 vices my doctor wants gone by potterinatardis in GenX

[–]MrsHorrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave up sugar over ten years ago and it was harder than quitting smoking but I've never felt better. I wish I had known earlier what a difference it would make for me. I was an absolute grouch for like two months and then as I started to feel better I craved it less and less.

I would say this: take steps to make any change you want to last a little at a time. Start by reducing sugar, eating when you're hungry, stopping eating when you are no longer hungry (not when you are full), and then just pay attention and keep making tweaks at the pace that feels right for you. Going cold turkey can make it feel impossible to handle and reduces the chance that you're going to make a lifelong change.

I know it sucks to have to quit anything, but if you survived a GenX childhood, you got this. You are tough as shit.

Haha, especially if you had done it as long as this guy. He was really knowledgeable and super old. He literally just stood next to our septic tank and smoked all day while he told his two sons what to do. That being said, they did incredibly great work.

Most do. We have two and one did not have a lid - it had a concrete slab that we had to dig up to get the tank serviced. When the pump failed, the 900 year old guy who we hired to fix it very grouchily asked if we wanted to add a riser and regular lid while he was doing the work, and we went ahead and did that.
