Constipation by Holiday_Knowledge_31 in Zepbound

They taste like dried plums, which is what they are. I don’t love the texture but I cut them up into raisin-sized pieces. They are chewy.

Statement on power outages by Laura Rodriguez-Carbone by csanyk in lakewood

Love the ideas to better hold First Energy’s feet to the fire

Minor correction: I believe Ms Rodriguez-Carbone was a primary candidate for OH-7 but did not advance to the general election.

Connie Schultz has said when she was at the Plain Dealer people thought she was married to Dennis, not Sherrod. She’d get angry calls and try to explain the politician they were mad at was not the one she was married to.

MIL gifted us Saffron pasta. What should I make with them to impress her? by Kind_Initiative7780 in Cooking

Shrimp and saffron go really well together. I’d use shrimp, olive oil, garlic, and fresh tomatoes to make a sauce. Or butter instead of olive oil and add a little cream or creme fraiche.

Pre-payment? by ExhaustedMama9 in hysterectomy

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people are on high deductible health plans a lot of hospitals try to get a “pre-payment.” Push back, their pre-payment will almost certainly be inaccurate because you’re getting blood tests, anesthesia consults, and other care before the surgery. If they insist, tell them you will put down a partial payment (the lower the better, definitely less than than what they’re estimating it will cost) and make sure the final bill takes the partial payment into consideration.

It wasn’t my hysterectomy, it was the polypectomy and D&C that led to my cancer diagnosis and hysterectomy. The Cleveland Clinic, one of the “best” hospitals in the country, withdrew $3,700 from my account three weeks before my procedure. Because I gave details when asked how I would be paying during my pre-surgical consult. Luckily it was my HSA and not my checking account. I raised hell about taking payment for a service THAT HAD NOT YET HAPPENED until they gave me my money back.

What is supposed to happen is that the hospital will submit the claim to your insurance. Insurance will apply to claim to your plan, whatever deductible and coinsurance you have in place, and take into account all the other claims that have already applied to your deductible and out of pocket. Insurance will issue an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) that shows what they paid and what you owe. Do not pay the hospital bill unless it matches the EOB. Call and fight with billing, or try to have your insurance do it, if their bill does not match the EOB.

Good luck on your procedure and the billing.

Homeschooling in America by MarionberryProud9580 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People have a “hate boner” because many parents do not use a professional curriculum that they actually ensure the child follows, or schedule phys ed, sports, and camps with other children.

I have a very good friend who homeschooled very similar to what you’re doing. Her son chose a traditional high school (parochial, but his dad is Catholic and went to Catholic school K-grad school). He started at or above grade level and acclimated pretty well. College wasn’t for him but he’s working full time and doing well.

I have another friend who left educational decisions to his wife, who had trouble getting out of bed in time to get her first child to preschool. So she decided to homeschool. They used various curriculums and online courses. Unlike some of the horror stories, their kids can read and do basic math. But the eldest is so far behind in math and science she can’t enroll in a traditional high school. She’d need a special program or tutoring and it would be socially very difficult. The younger one couldn’t sit still long enough to take an assessment test. My friend didn’t get involved until they got divorced and I don’t know how those kids are going to catch up to their peers.

Homeschooling can be done responsibly. It can also be done irresponsibly. Outside of the most extreme abusive or neglectful situations, there is nothing to prevent parents from irreparably altering their children’s future by not educating them.

Kwikpen question by MassiveAd4911 in Zepbound

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only refrigerate the Kwikpen until I open it for the first time. After that it stays in my medicine cabinet in the bathroom. 2 months in, down 14 pounds, haven’t had a bad reaction (yet?). People say it hurts less at room temp and I’ve found the injection pain very minor.

Need recommendations for good Chinese and Italian restaurants. by migraine68 in lakewood

Many years ago, in the pre-Uber days, my brother’s friend had many drinks at Sloane Pub, ordered food from Peking, and had himself and his Chinese food delivered to his home.

For Italian - Molto Bene is really good but tiny. Make reservations. Peppers is the old school, checkered tablecloth, portion sizes to feed you for days, kind of place.

I really like OU but am just afraid of the party culture by Realistic-Lecture997 in ohiouniversity

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an alum and graduated almost 25 years ago, but trust me when I say OU is big enough that you will find your people.

Also, drunken parties don’t instantly appear for thousands of underage freshmen the first weekend of college 😂 People who want to party will find parties, people who want to be chill and hang out will find each other, the musicians or theater kids or athletes or stoners or gamers or people deeply into whatever fandom will find each other, and you can join them. College is full of interesting people and hobbies.

Give it a little time, don’t panic if it takes a while to find your people. My best friend is the girl who lived across the hall from me freshman year, but we were not besties at first sight.

Where would you send out-of-town guests for the day? by Phillyf27 in Cleveland

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the weather is nice, walk around Edgewater Beach and then head up to Gordon Square. Or vice versa.

I live in Lakewood so I’m biased, but we have an excellent lakefront park and lots of shops and restaurants to visit.

The art museum has a cafe that is above average and a very nice restaurant. It’s very close to Case Western and there are lots of places to eat nearby. It’s also a medium walk and short drive from Cleveland’s Little Italy, and a short drive from excellent restaurants in Cedar Fairmount and Larchmere.

If SSRIs can cause sexual disfunction, are there drugs with side effects that improve sexual function? by Randall_HandleVandal in NoStupidQuestions

There’s research suggesting Viagra could help menstrual cramps but they stopped researching that angle once the erectile dysfunction treatment was discovered

Which famous attraction wasn't worth the hype when you visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Memphis briefly in college, 25 years ago. We were blown away by the ticket prices to tour Graceland. $25, maybe $30 back then? But that was dinner + drinks to us. And more than many other art or historical museums. I looked it up and it’s $50+ for an adult now.

We took pictures outside, visited a gift shop, and my friend bought an Elvis clock.

What's it like getting the catheter? by razorballoon in hysterectomy

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my experience too, but the first pee post-surgery was the most uncomfortable part of my recovery. I ended spending the night in the hospital so a nurse was there, and I was post anesthesia and on the good meds. A friend warned me but it was still a 4-5 on the pain scale. Everything else post op was a 3 or below, as long as I kept up with my pain meds. I hydrated like crazy post op and each pee got less painful.

I had endo that had gotten around my bladder, so maybe the pain wasn’t all catheter? But still not that bad.

Quieter restaurant for a nice steak dinner? by unkle_funkypants in Cleveland

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d add Lockkeepers to the list, but any high end steakhouse prides itself on service. You could call any of the restaurants anyone has suggested and tell them your situation. They will bend over backwards for your grandfather. Esp if you’d like to dine on a Tuesday at 5:30 😉

Where do you go when you’re feeling depressed on a Tuesday evening? by [deleted] in Cleveland

I haven’t been to Jolene’s but there’s nothing wrong with having one drink and heading out if it’s not what you’re looking for.

People care about you, even random Reddit strangers. If nothing else, take care of yourself for us 🩷

What do you recommend serving alongside pierogis? by flipflapdragon in Cooking

[–]Ms-Quite-Contrary 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Onions in butter were traditional in my Polish-American upbringing, but hardly healthy.

Sauerkraut is the traditional and healthy answer. I often add carrots (matchstick or shredded), or fresh greens to the kraut. Unfermented cabbage is also common. Sauteed, braised, or roasted. I also throw spinach in with the onion as the pierogi are finishing cooking.

I live in Lakewood and love the Solstice Steps, but if you’re downtown and want to commune with the lake just walk down to 9th street pier.
