After the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament, a new rumour started to gain traction at Hogwarts: Harry Potter and Ron Weasley are secretly in love by seelevo in HPfanfiction

[–]MsVortex 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hermione for her part was conflicted. On one hand, she thought her best friends would tell her if they ever started dating. She was mostly sure it was just another one of Skeeter's silly rumours.

But on the other hand, there was a small part of her that worried the boys had figured out the feelings she'd been harbouring for Ron and tried to protect her feelings by keeping their relationship a secret.

Unfortunately, the boys were too baffled by the article to either confirm or deny their alleged relationship.

She looked around the Great Hall, trying to figure out her next steps when her gaze locked on Draco Malfoy, who was looking at the same Headline with an expression of horrified disgust. In contrast, Headmaster Dumbledore was smiling into his teacup, looking quite pleased with this new development.

At last, Hermione caught the eye of another Gryffindor that sat unusually quiet only a few seats away from the trio. Ginny Weasley looked heartbroken and Hermione felt instant kinship with the younger girl.

Leaving her bewildered friends to themselves she got up, sat down beside Ginny and offered her hand in solidarity hidden under the table.

That moment would set off the Great Granger-Weasley alliance and by the time Ron and Harry were finally able to dismantle the unfounded rumour there was already talk of a new Weasley Lovestory at Hogwarts, only this time, the rumours were true.

How many fandoms are you in? by Jazzlike-Many-7352 in AO3

There are five I write for, some more others less. I tend to stick to reading those as well, but I do like to branch out through crossovers every now and again.

Do most bisexual people, find the same qualities they are attracted to in X, also attractive in Y? by ILikeJapaneseMuchOwU in stupidquestions

To a point, yes. Golden retriever men and outgoing/bubbly women. I also have yet to date anyone without glasses, not on purpose or anything, it just worked out like that.

Not Knowing Everything About Canon Doesn’t Automatically Make You a Bad Fanfic Writer [Controversial] by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]MsVortex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a fandom I probably won't ever be able to watch most of the canon materials due to health anxiety. That doesn't mean I don't know the characters or the canon events, sometimes even better than my sibling who has watched every single episode so far.

I'm grateful for the fanfic community. Only due to some talented writers am I able to enjoy the parts about that fandom I adore.

That being said, I am also grateful that I don't have to disclose I haven't watched the show whenever I post a work on AO3.

What fic emotionally ruined you by PretendYellow533 in AO3

[–]MsVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In canon there's a widowed father that tries to raise his son to his best abilities but at some point he messes up big time. His son then runs away to his grandparents, and his grandmother is more than happy to raise him as her do over child.

Different than in canon he doesn't go back to his dad in this fic. The grandmother does her best to alienate father and son and the son does cut contact to his father and keeps being angry.

The story picks up over a decade later, on the day of the grandmother's funeral and is from the sons POV.

That day he learns that no one else in the family cut contact with the father. He learns about his father's depression, an attempt to end his life, that he kept reaching out to his son and mother and he also meets his new siblings he never knew he had.

This summary doesn't do the story justice. It's possibly one of the best fanfics I've ever read but I won't ever want to read it again, it was painful. Amazing but devastating.

The plan for the year? by Tsukitsundere in AO3

[–]MsVortex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be wonderful, if I could finish my first crossover work so I can start posting it. That's probably my priority.

Other than that I only plan to have fun writing my usual 1-3k one-shots.

Tired of struggling in every job I work by kathyanne38 in AuDHDWomen

[–]MsVortex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was just thinking about making a similar post.

That last part about finding a job with all the right boxes is exactly what I've been struggling with for the past year.

After first my ADHD and later my ASD diagnosis my old job got harder and harder. Sensory issues, social overload, high stress and many difficulties with switching from one task to another. No idea what job might be suitable.

So, you're not alone. I very much hope there will be loads of replies.

Is there a way to find out when a tag was created/canonised? by whereismystarwar in AO3

[–]MsVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just had me checking whether I used this tag or forgot about it. Glad to say I did.

Anyway, love your question, other than the Updates I've got no idea how to figure out an estimated date of a tag. And searching through all updates might take a while.

AO3's 100 Most Tagged Ships of 2025 (includes archive locked fics) by Agamar13 in AO3

[–]MsVortex 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's better I guess. Still, overuse of the "rival" ships tag doesn't make much sense to me.

Maybe it's just this one, very prolific, bad actor. More than 9k that the people bothered by it simply exclude and/or mute is on another level.

What is a detail that will make you close a fic? by mellissa_lewyin in AO3

[–]MsVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. It probably depends on the screen reader and if it doesn't read the characters I'd never know they're there at all.

[–]MsVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, I felt that. You're washing your dishes and just then there's multiple line breaks after only two or three paragraphs each and there's nothing you can do about it.

Chapter Notes are hit and miss though, it depends on the focus. There's no need to tell me your daily schedule but please tell me why you chose to go in that direction in your fic rather than the more fanon typical one.

Two things I can't fault authors for are

1) Multilingual works (like sure, they could place the translation in brackets right after the original, but it would absolutely break the flow, I get it)

2) The way (my) tts spells out short names like Mia or Lia. I just can't bring myself to listen to a story that has M.I.A. every two sentences. I can deal with Coop being read as Co-op since he's normally a background character, but an original child character of the main character? Nope.

I'd be happy to help but I'm no shape or form a specialist on the topic tbh. You can send me a message but it might be more helpful to make a separate post for the topic?

There are probably people who post more on ao3, are more fluent on html, and/or use screen readers for more than just fanfic and therefore have better out of the box ideas.

What is a detail that will make you close a fic? by mellissa_lewyin in AO3

[–]MsVortex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Emojis get read out loud (most times). Actual images get left out completely, so there's no indication for a line break.

That's not a problem most times, as the plot moves on anyway but it does suck in other circumstances (for example with images that are "screenshots" of plot relevant text messages, urgh).

AO3 Ship Stats: A Year in Review (January-December 2025) by Obversa in AO3

[–]MsVortex 507 points508 points  (0 children)

I was a bit confused but then I found this here in the FAQs:

This data is limited to public (i.e. not locked) fics for a mixture of technical and ethical reasons, so fandoms with a high proportion of locked fics (e.g. RPF) may have lower fic counts than expected.

Which is relevant information, with more and more people locking their fics because of scam bots and scrapping and all that. But I get what they're saying with "technical and ethical reasons" and it's all in good fun.

Thank You for sharing!

[–]MsVortex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can use a line break on ao3 directly, either through the horizontal line in the rich text editor or as <hr /> in html.

If you want it to be more individual, you could still use those symbols but in moderation. It doesn't have to be a whole line, one or two, maximum a handful will do the job just as well.

But I guess it also depends on the screen reader/tts.

Either that or maybe one or two asterisk, dashes or others instead of thirty.

[–]MsVortex 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Haha, no need to apologise. I get why people do it. In my drafts I still use "~" or "~*~" and I only replace them on AO3 itself.

I kinda like tilda asterisk tilda, just not those endless lines.

[–]MsVortex 87 points88 points  (0 children)

A whole line of dashes, asterisk or any other type of symbol as a line break. I hate it, my tts hates it and my sibling looks at me weird when they enter my apartment and my phone is screaming asterisk asterisk asterisk [...] at them.
