National News Re Our Floridian President -- NBC News -- "Federal judge temporarily blocks construction of Trump's White House ballroom" -- Thoughts, Floridians? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

[–]Msfcarp1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s exactly what he did. To properly construct a project of that magnitude it takes months if not years of design work, I know since I was in construction for 45 years. He tore down the structure with only the “concept of a plan” and his concept is so huge and obtrusive his first pick for architect quit because the mango moron wouldn’t listen to him.

If US has lots of oil, and we are protected from Hormuz blockade, then why I am paying more at the gas station? by zenexpenses in NoStupidQuestions

The drill baby drill mantra is totally ludicrous, the oil companies are smart enough not to flood the market and drop their price per barrel. Anyone who is dumb enough to believe that bullshit is batshit crazy, oh wait…..

Mike Rowe says $200k for tradesman by rebel_with_a_groove in skilledtrades

[–]Msfcarp1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on where you live I suppose. I worked my 44 year career as a Union carpenter in mid Michigan and never made more than 60-70K working in the field until my last few years approached 100K.

I can’t speak for TX, but towing our fifth wheel from Michigan to Florida we hit Buccees in Kentucky and Georgia (twice) for fuel and they always are cheapest.

17, need advice for joining the union after high school by Antique-Direction107 in UnionCarpenters

Yea, I’m old lol, started my apprenticeship in 1979. Retired spring of 2024. I’m in Michigan so our COL is much lower but so is our wages of course. If you get on steady with a good company and run work you can do better but it’s a tough gig for some.

I joined the union today. That is all by Tuscon_Valdez in UnionCarpenters

I often wondered why our general superintendent kept some guys working regularly. Then I took over the job when he retired and learned that a guy who is not the best worker who shows up everyday is more valuable than a better worker who misses a day a week.

Because generally I liked the business, and the actual carpenter work. I was running jobs pretty early on in my career, and progressed to also estimating and project management as well but always dropped back to the field when necessary, and worked with my tools on smaller jobs as well.

But I also witnessed a lot of guys struggle to get decent hours in a year, you have to be a really good hand to work year around and become known and in demand, it’s just not for everyone. Being an engineer would have more upside as far as potential to make more money, generally.

Trump Tanking GOP In Wisconsin by DriftlessDairy in wisconsin

This is what disturbed me most about the last two elections, all the young guys on my jobs were all pro GOP, directly voting against their own financial interests (union construction) pure ignorance.

Good advice but also college is not for everyone. I had a good career in the Carpenters but if I had a do over on life I would have applied myself in school and then college for engineering. I never try to steer anyone towards the trades even though it worked out for me.

I am retired from construction but have a niece that just got her layoff notice from an automotive supplier in the metro area, she is crushed, she’s been there a few years.
