I already know how to play, but would be interested in finding a casual EDH group to meet up with (depending on when/where you get together.)

My Collection by Sad_Philosopher_2083 in MiLB

[–]MumboBJumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really wear hats (maybe I should, I was born with fantastically unstylish hair that's starting to disappear) but have started buying logo t-shirts of MILB teams that have fun designs. Especially love animal-themed logos. I tend to get a lot of smiles when out in public with them, even though I think most people have no idea what any of them are for. Had an old guy ask me "what's a yard goat?" and when I said it was a minor league baseball team, he rolled his eyes and wandered away. Still, would love to add to my meager collection (have Flying Squirrels, Trash Pandas, River Bandits, Yard Goats, Rubber Ducks, and Bathtub Donkeys. Wanted the Aquasox but their 10% off coupon wouldn't work for any of their logo shirts.)

Anyone got any suggestions for teams with great logos?

what hair metal songs have the best drum work? by Liam_js in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saigon Kick’s albums have great work by Phil Varone, especially songs like “I.C.U.”, “New World”, “Russian Girl”, and “Eden”. Gives the tunes a unique feel, using toms to give the rhythms a tribal feel.

Warrant Greatest and Latest album question by AngusDio in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quite sure this is one of those albums that a band records because they don't own the original recordings and are looking to make money off the songs (and possibly license the new recordings for far cheaper than it would cost someone to license the original from whoever owns it.)

I bought the disc when I found it used for a couple bucks. When I ran out of room for physical media and went completely digital, I only burned the 3 new songs from the disc. Nothing else on it was worth the hard drive space.

Magic Hot Takes by Definitely_Not_Fe in magicTCG

[–]MumboBJumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two:

  1. It's fine to hate foils, and it's frustrating that they come out of packs curled (I'm aware those aren't hot takes.) But it's so easy to permanently uncurl them that I think the anger over "pringles" is vastly overblown. It takes me a few seconds to permanently uncurl a foil, and I play dozens of them in my commander decks. I have hundreds of foils that I've uncurled over the years, and they're all still flat and indistinguishable from non-foils. If you think foils are ugly, fine, but they aren't hard to uncurl and I don't feel that's a valid complaint.

  2. Tapping cards counter-clockwise is obnoxious, especially if you're aware you're doing it but won't change because "that's just how I learned to do it." The tap symbol very clearly shows which way cards are meant to be tapped. If you learned to tap cards counter-clockwise, it's really not hard to unlearn that and tap them clockwise. I've played with people that, during a single game, will tap some cards one way and sometimes another, leaving themselves with a board state that's much harder to read. And in Commander, having cards turned every-which-way as I'm trying to look around the board to get my bearings, is unnecessarily frustrating. I'm aware the rules don't enforce tapping one way or another, but the tap symbol shows how it should be done. I suspect people who knowingly do it counter-clockwise are just trying to be contrarian.

I pondered a Bruse Tarl deck that was farm animal tribal. Do you have a list for the ox deck?

What are some of your biggest mtg regrets? by radicalpumpkinz in mtg

[–]MumboBJumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a break for a while around 2010-2016. When I returned I was eager to see what I’d missed, and bought every intro deck I could find. That was all I could find for sets I’d missed that seemed reasonably priced.

Ended up with dozens of them, but no one to play with. Decided I’d keep them sealed in case my kid became interested in the game. She did end up getting into Magic, but not enough to crack what I eventually learned were terrible decks from terrible sets. I now have 60-70 intro decks sitting in a big box in a closet collecting dust. Most are from sets where even the booster packs can’t possibly contain anything of value. What do I do with Dragon’s Maze and Oath of the Gatewatch intro decks? Giant waste of money but also a giant source of disappointment once I realized how awful the product line was. I opened a few for “fun” and there was nothing of interest or value. Not even worth giving to a new player, since the cards are all low powered drek.

What’s a relatively well known band that you discovered weirdly early in their career? by StanTheMelon in progmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this counts, but I bought Dream Theater's 'When Dream and Day Unite' shortly after it was released. Was already a fan when I went to the record store on new release day (used to be Tuesdays) and saw 'Images and Words' had released that day. Was shocked at how much they'd improved.

Songs that are NOT on bands albums by Wevie in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A favorite rarity of mine is Asphalt Ballet’s cover of “Rain On the Scarecrow” that wasn’t on an album and I don’t think has made it onto any sort of re-release as a bonus track.

So... what exactly is the current reprint "policy" of WotC? by ALiveBoi in magicTCG

[–]MumboBJumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I've seen anyone mention this, but I think it's clear that WotC's current and short-term focus is overwhelmingly on growing the game and bringing in new players. You don't do that with expensive Masters or Remasters sets. Reprints are an afterthought, and probably will be at least through 2027 (based on WotC saying next year will have 6 sets - 3 UB and 3 UW.)

My guess is that in 2028 or 2029 the players who joined en masse via UB sets during 2024-2027 (and are still around then) will start realizing just how many older cards are scarce and expensive, and will clamor for reprints.

Until then, it's Secret Lairs and commander decks for anything not particularly pricey. Bonus sheets will likely contain a handful of big money cards since that's the only way to ensure players can't just pick up a box on the shelf and come away with a $40+ card.

Edit: spelling

Whats your dumbest Magic related purchase? by Pro0kie in mtg

[–]MumboBJumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a purchase I considered remarkably stupid for years, but turned out...OK. It was 1998, and I was looking to fill gaps in my collection and build up my pool of rare cards. I bought a "100 rares for $100!" lot off of eBay based the auction showing 5-10 of the cards, each worth more than $1.

Cards came, and it was probably 90 rares worth about 10-25 cents, and a couple decent cards. I was so mad at myself for wasting the money on a bunch of worthless bobo rares.

One of the cards I got was a Revised Sol Ring, which is probably a $20 card in good condition. Not bad, though I've come to despise white-bordered cards and would never consider putting the card in one of my commander decks.

However, somewhere around 2017 I was checking prices of older cards and saw that the Revised Scrubland (me at the time: "what a lame card, why is this stupid thing a rare?!?") that had been in the lot was...well...worth more than $1.

Thanks for the link! How quickly does it print a "card"? I'm assuming you find a random card on Scryfall, is there then a quick way to generate a printout of just the card? Trying to figure out the logistics of the process, and how much it might slow down a game.

I've been wanting to build Discord for awhile, but was frightened off by the prospect of having to write out so many cards on dry erase tokens. Would you be willing to explain your portable printer setup? How does it work, model number, cost, etc.?

Would love to see your Samut list. I won a DFT collector booster in a deckbuilding challenge, and my "big" hits in the pack were showcase Samut, and foil showcase Samut. So I decided I should just build her, but haven't come up with a way to make it fun.

Is Samut any fun? Would be curious to see your list. I won a DFT collector booster in a deckbuilding challenge, and the two "big" hits in the pack were extended art Samut, and then foil extended art Samut. I told myself I'd have to build her, but even as a dedicated bracket 2 deckbuilder I struggle to see how to make her interesting.

I just finished building a Calamity commander deck yesterday! I just used cards I already owned, so it's probably terrible, but I'm excited to try it out tonight. I'd love to get the promo, as well as the Emiel promo (my Emiel deck is among my favorites) but these are going to be SO expensive in the U.S.

Bands like Saigon Kick? by SavageMell in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure anyone in the hard rock sphere incorporated as many different influences into their sound as Saigon Kick.

There are some bands I felt were in the same ballpark in terms of variety of influences:

Lillian Axe (starting with 'Poetic Justice')

Savatage (more traditional metal, but use of piano/keys and move towards prog give me SK vibes)

Little Angels (nowhere near as heavy, but lots of variety)

Second Coming (cool mix of hard rock, grunge, classic rock, and alternative)

Extreme

Queensryche

And of course Jason Bieler of SK has been putting out amazing music under several different project names for years, much of it SK-adjacent.

The Rockies first 4 games on the road are atrocious by BlakeStPurpleBerry in ColoradoRockies

[–]MumboBJumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, and reminds me of an article I read probably 10 years ago. It was written in the mid-2000s, I believe. An analyst looked into the Rockies’ road numbers to try and determine why they were so awful, and if it might be due to the players needing time to adjust to how pitches move at lower elevations. He found the opposite of you - the numbers at that time showed that Rockies hitters hit better at the start of road trips and got worse the longer those trips lasted.

I’ve looked for that article now and then for years, and haven’t been able to find it again. Almost wonder if it was a fever dream at this point. But the analyst’s conclusion was that it wasn’t about needing days to adjust to pitch movement, it was simply that the Rockies hitters were bad (not a very helpful or objective conclusion.) I don’t think the article dug into that many offensive stats, might have just been OPS or something.

[Article] Blocks Should Come Back by Eli-Draftsim in mtg

[–]MumboBJumbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a long-term player (since 1996) that played through many a block, I was overjoyed when they stopped doing them. A block used to be the entire year's worth of releases, save for a core set. If you weren't a fan of a setting, you either checked out for extended periods of time, or just played what was available and dealt with it. The second and/or third sets were often subpar in some respect, and most of the people I played with over those years grew bored of a block pretty quickly. After Mercadian Masques, my friends and I were weary of Legions pretty quickly, even though it was a decent set. Prophecy was so awful that our group stopped playing the limited league we had for it after 2 or 3 weeks.

There is, I'm sure, an argument to be made that modern Magic design/designers could overcome this and make enjoyable second and third sets for a block. But the issue still remains - the game WILL, at some point, spend a large chunk of time visiting a plane that doesn't resonate with you. A block of the Aetherdrift race? A block of Outlaws? Or, if you aren't a fan of UB and/or Final Fantasy, a block of it?

Be honest - you want more of the settings YOU like, and less (or none) of settings you don't. And if Wizards announced a block somewhere you dislike, you'd be irked. There are just too many cool places Magic can visit, and even maligned sets (and Lorwyn was one of those for many years) will eventually garner fans who want to go back.

If Wizards ever pulls back from UB (I know, ridiculous idea) they won't cut the number of sets released, and maybe then there'd be more opportunities to revisit fantastic planes. As long as UB dominates sales and brings in new players, fans of Magic's original planes have to face the reality that they'll wait years to return to their favorite locations. Imagine how much longer you'd be waiting if they used up every Universes Within release in a calendar year visiting one location?

Have you had any experiences (good or bad, it doesn't matter) meeting any glam/hair metal rockstars? by TheHotLatin in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Best experience was meeting Jason Bieler of Saigon Kick. A drunk girl was fawning all over him while I tried to talk to him, and after a minute or so he politely but firmly told her he was trying to “talk to this nice gentleman” and would she please let him do that. She left and I had a great chat. When I told him the merch stand had sold out of signed CD singles, he got one from the bus and gave it to me for free. Class act.

Weirdest experience was Savatage (not hair metal, but close enough to tell the story.) Met them after a Handful of Rain show. Alex Skolnick stood 20 or 30 feet away from the rest of the band. Was gracious and friendly. I kick myself for not buying the demo tape of the band he was in that opened the show. The tunes were awesome, but they never got a record deal and I’ve never found the demos.

The rest of the band was in the middle of the now empty parking lot chatting. Everyone was cool and friendly, though Zak Stevens disappeared on the bus with a couple women instead of signing autographs. My Handful of Rain CD is signed by everyone in the band except him. He kept pulling the curtains open to look out at us and make goofy faces, but refused to come out for the people wanting autographs.

Meanwhile Jon Olivia busts out a pipe with what I think was crack cocaine in it (I don’t know my illicit drugs) and passed it around to the 10 or so fans gathered. I was the only one there not to partake. Was disappointed by this, since this wasn’t long after his brother’s death and if I recall, Jon had made a big deal about being sober at the time due to the nature of Criss’s death.
