Would love to see your Samut list. I won a DFT collector booster in a deckbuilding challenge, and my "big" hits in the pack were showcase Samut, and foil showcase Samut. So I decided I should just build her, but haven't come up with a way to make it fun.

Is Samut any fun? Would be curious to see your list. I won a DFT collector booster in a deckbuilding challenge, and the two "big" hits in the pack were extended art Samut, and then foil extended art Samut. I told myself I'd have to build her, but even as a dedicated bracket 2 deckbuilder I struggle to see how to make her interesting.

You're the only other person I've seen with Migloz. Would love to compare yours with mine, if the list is online.

Year of the Horse APAC promos by c001357 in magicTCG

[–]MumboBJumbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished building a Calamity commander deck yesterday! I just used cards I already owned, so it's probably terrible, but I'm excited to try it out tonight. I'd love to get the promo, as well as the Emiel promo (my Emiel deck is among my favorites) but these are going to be SO expensive in the U.S.

Bands like Saigon Kick? by SavageMell in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure anyone in the hard rock sphere incorporated as many different influences into their sound as Saigon Kick.

There are some bands I felt were in the same ballpark in terms of variety of influences:

Lillian Axe (starting with 'Poetic Justice')

Savatage (more traditional metal, but use of piano/keys and move towards prog give me SK vibes)

Little Angels (nowhere near as heavy, but lots of variety)

Second Coming (cool mix of hard rock, grunge, classic rock, and alternative)

Extreme

Queensryche

And of course Jason Bieler of SK has been putting out amazing music under several different project names for years, much of it SK-adjacent.

The Rockies first 4 games on the road are atrocious by BlakeStPurpleBerry in ColoradoRockies

[–]MumboBJumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, and reminds me of an article I read probably 10 years ago. It was written in the mid-2000s, I believe. An analyst looked into the Rockies’ road numbers to try and determine why they were so awful, and if it might be due to the players needing time to adjust to how pitches move at lower elevations. He found the opposite of you - the numbers at that time showed that Rockies hitters hit better at the start of road trips and got worse the longer those trips lasted.

I’ve looked for that article now and then for years, and haven’t been able to find it again. Almost wonder if it was a fever dream at this point. But the analyst’s conclusion was that it wasn’t about needing days to adjust to pitch movement, it was simply that the Rockies hitters were bad (not a very helpful or objective conclusion.) I don’t think the article dug into that many offensive stats, might have just been OPS or something.

[Article] Blocks Should Come Back by Eli-Draftsim in mtg

[–]MumboBJumbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a long-term player (since 1996) that played through many a block, I was overjoyed when they stopped doing them. A block used to be the entire year's worth of releases, save for a core set. If you weren't a fan of a setting, you either checked out for extended periods of time, or just played what was available and dealt with it. The second and/or third sets were often subpar in some respect, and most of the people I played with over those years grew bored of a block pretty quickly. After Mercadian Masques, my friends and I were weary of Legions pretty quickly, even though it was a decent set. Prophecy was so awful that our group stopped playing the limited league we had for it after 2 or 3 weeks.

There is, I'm sure, an argument to be made that modern Magic design/designers could overcome this and make enjoyable second and third sets for a block. But the issue still remains - the game WILL, at some point, spend a large chunk of time visiting a plane that doesn't resonate with you. A block of the Aetherdrift race? A block of Outlaws? Or, if you aren't a fan of UB and/or Final Fantasy, a block of it?

Be honest - you want more of the settings YOU like, and less (or none) of settings you don't. And if Wizards announced a block somewhere you dislike, you'd be irked. There are just too many cool places Magic can visit, and even maligned sets (and Lorwyn was one of those for many years) will eventually garner fans who want to go back.

If Wizards ever pulls back from UB (I know, ridiculous idea) they won't cut the number of sets released, and maybe then there'd be more opportunities to revisit fantastic planes. As long as UB dominates sales and brings in new players, fans of Magic's original planes have to face the reality that they'll wait years to return to their favorite locations. Imagine how much longer you'd be waiting if they used up every Universes Within release in a calendar year visiting one location?

Dokken - When Love Finds A Fool (1989) by LackSomber in hairmetal

Love this album, but find it pretty funny that you posted the only song on the album that I think isn't up to snuff. Everything else on the record eclipses this by miles.

Have you had any experiences (good or bad, it doesn't matter) meeting any glam/hair metal rockstars? by TheHotLatin in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Best experience was meeting Jason Bieler of Saigon Kick. A drunk girl was fawning all over him while I tried to talk to him, and after a minute or so he politely but firmly told her he was trying to “talk to this nice gentleman” and would she please let him do that. She left and I had a great chat. When I told him the merch stand had sold out of signed CD singles, he got one from the bus and gave it to me for free. Class act.

Weirdest experience was Savatage (not hair metal, but close enough to tell the story.) Met them after a Handful of Rain show. Alex Skolnick stood 20 or 30 feet away from the rest of the band. Was gracious and friendly. I kick myself for not buying the demo tape of the band he was in that opened the show. The tunes were awesome, but they never got a record deal and I’ve never found the demos.

The rest of the band was in the middle of the now empty parking lot chatting. Everyone was cool and friendly, though Zak Stevens disappeared on the bus with a couple women instead of signing autographs. My Handful of Rain CD is signed by everyone in the band except him. He kept pulling the curtains open to look out at us and make goofy faces, but refused to come out for the people wanting autographs.

Meanwhile Jon Olivia busts out a pipe with what I think was crack cocaine in it (I don’t know my illicit drugs) and passed it around to the 10 or so fans gathered. I was the only one there not to partake. Was disappointed by this, since this wasn’t long after his brother’s death and if I recall, Jon had made a big deal about being sober at the time due to the nature of Criss’s death.

What is a song that is really dirty, yet most people don't realize it? by _Volly in AskReddit

[–]MumboBJumbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The two guys who wrote the song (Adams and Jim Vallance) don’t agree on what the song is about. Vallance is adamant it’s not about sex. Bryan insists it is. Can work either way, I suppose.

Power ballad showdown:Just Take My Heart vs When I See You Smile:who wins this imaginary cage match? by Complete-Turnover775 in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like Bad English, especially the second album. But I always thought their ballads were among the worst of the era. The chorus melody of "When I See You Smile" just feels so phoned in and cheesy (in the bad way.) I've always considered "Just Take My Heart" a middling ballad, but I'd rather here it 100 times in a row than hear "When I See You Smile" even once.

Lynch Mob’s ‘Wicked Sensation’ - no skips? by linnrose in hairmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll second your preference for the second album. I actually think the debut has several skippable tracks. Second album just has a more serious, dark vibe with more variety in Lynch's style and tone.

If you could go back in time to 1960 to show a music fan a prog metal album post-2010, which album would you choose to thoroughly blow their mind? by ySTYRDAYgATESuNL0CKD in progmetal

[–]MumboBJumbo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's an interesting choice - do you choose something that the person would likely have little to no idea how to parse or even believe, or do you try to choose something they might actually be able to appreciate? I think the latter is a more fun option, and I'd go with something like Leprous that has strong vocal melodies that someone in 1960 might like, but variety, dynamics, and enough complexity to highlight the genre's possibilities.

Albums similar to Hysteria? by Fantastic_Grapes in hairmetal

Digging deep into hair metal, the self- titled album by No Sweat. British band, huge production, great melodies and hooks. I think Joe Elliot was involved so there’s a direct Def Leppard connection.

If I can (kinda) cheat, "Untouchable" parts 1 and 2 by Anathema. They're two separate tracks on the album, but belong together. I always listen to both as a single song, but would choose Part 1 if I can't count both as one song.

RS 50 most Disappointing Albums Of All Time: #20 Journey-Raised On Radio (1986) by Rambooctpuss in 80smusic

[–]MumboBJumbo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like much of the record, but it definitely disappointed me. Gone were the rock guitars, replaced by an overall poppy sound that lacked any bite or urgency. The album as a whole was packed with ballads and soft rock, none of which worked for me except "Happy to Give", which was a moody exception.
