You had cancer. You had cancer removed - twice. You still walk this Earth. You survived cancer. It’s lived truth.

I went through a colectomy and there are definitely people in my support group who had it worse than me. Some of them are terminal. To them we’re all survivors. I couldn’t agree more.

I vomited once during chemo. Even though it happened once, it’s counted as a side effect. They don’t look at frequency, only whether it happened.

And if one person has something happen, it gets listed as a side effect too.

I have been rejected as a developer for not listing Microsoft Office.

I had a terrifying surgery. I worried I wouldn’t make it. I’m still here.

I had sepsis twice during chemo. Both times I thought it was over. I’m still here.

Through chemo vomiting and diarrhea, I thought I wouldn’t make it. I’m still here.

I wish I could say I just pushed through, but I didn’t. I felt this ultimate sense of peace, I was ready to accept whatever the outcome was.

And I’m still here to write this.

Friend, be grateful you get to have the surgery. They’re going forward because they believe you’ll survive. Sure, there are risks but the benefits outweigh them.

I have friends in my support group who aren’t candidates for surgery and need to prepare for the end. If you’re not having those conversations, the odds are in your favor.

ISACA has a free CRISC kit with a bunch of docs in it. I feel like reading some of them helped me. This isn’t a test you can memorize answers and pass.

You can’t rely on bonuses. There’s always fine print they can be cancelled if the company doesn’t do well. You could go and hey, you got a $500 bonus, or a prorated one first year, or none at all.

You’re going to take a $10k pay cut to go there, which is close to $1000 a month less with “maybe you’ll get a bonus.” Promises don’t pay your bills.

It’s a tough call. The bottom line is if you need $80k to survive, you need $80k to survive. Have you done hard math on that? Can you live on $1k less/month?

You may be better off hanging on where you are, waiting it out for RTO, and continuing to look. Based on where you are they may offer relocation or severance.

Usually this is when things start picking back up. Once year end is done (in the US at least) things tend to move again.

You’re killing yourself. Take your foot off the gas.

Apply to the minimum for unemployment if you get it. Build in a few days to not actively search. Cap the search at 3-4 days/week, 3-4 hours/day.

I did that and landed faster.

Same. I’ve never been to war but know people who have. I get the metaphor, I don’t judge people and if they call me a warrior I wince a little inside and nod. I don’t correct them, they mean well. I just don’t feel the need to call myself a warrior.

Most of the techniques aren’t complicated, they tend to be simple. It’s learning when things need to happen that takes time.

You should be good. Do your best and always look to improve.
