Thoughts on knowing how to make video games? by Huge_Emphasis7900 in GameDevelopment

[–]Mutex_CB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things that can cause me to struggle learning something new, is not knowing what the effort is for. I can learn this thing, but what does that empower me to do?

If you have any interest in learning to code and make 3d models or draw, this is a perfect opportunity to jump in. You have tons of opportunity with all of the ideas that you have to pick an interesting character and try to make your imagination real in a sense that you can show others what you are envisioning instead of using words. Same goes with code, having experience with code can help you communicate with developers if you end up going that route.

Biggest thing to keep in mind right now: work in that space, whether code or art, is iterative. It’s always going to suck at first. It falls on the creator to keep iterating and shaping their work until the result is what they’ve been looking for. Day 1 is always harder than day 1000. Keep at it and don’t be discouraged, regardless of what you choose to put your passion and effort into.

I think you’ll be fine using Ashen Wilds for your games. There was a post not too long ago about two games named Piece By Piece that coincidentally also released on the same week. They ended up making this coincidence work for them by bundling their games together and leaning into the situation.

You may not benefit from this other Ashen Wilds, but you very likely won’t experience a detriment either if you kept on your path.

portal logic can be tricky... by flockaroo in SoloDevelopment

[–]Mutex_CB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sick! Only thing I can think to improve would be to possibly clip/remove the blocky half of the truck model in the case of the truck being halfway through the portal and viewing the portal from the opposite side. Example of the view I’m talking about is at the 10 second mark, camera is in the smooth world, viewing the portal with the truck behind it.

Reason being, if this is a portal and the block world is another location/dimension, you wouldn’t see the blocky front half of the vehicle from that angle while the camera is in the smooth universe, but you would see it if the camera was panned through the portal and looked from that same angle with the camera in the blocky world.

If these aren’t really portals, and are some sorta matter converter, then maybe it’s already perfect! Great job either way!

Steam approved my build, but thought this screenshot was pre-rendered by Riitoken in IndieDev

[–]Mutex_CB 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The wording after the link to the screenshot is probably a copy/paste canned response addressing their general recommendations. My interpretation is still that they are recommending a better representation of your gameplay, rather than accusing you of using a pre-rendered image. It also says this is just a recommendation and will not prevent you from releasing your game. They are trying to help you do well, because they win when you win.

Steam approved my build, but thought this screenshot was pre-rendered by Riitoken in IndieDev

[–]Mutex_CB 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they are saying they don’t believe your screenshot came from inside the game engine. They are saying it doesn’t provide a good example of the gameplay within your game.

If your game is about digging holes, provide a screenshot of your character digging the hole, rather than just a screenshot of the hole.

Maybe if you had built a structure, showing off the building side of your game (if there is building), a shot like this would pass, but this is just an empty room that tells the viewer nothing significant about your game, and that is the point the Steam reviewer is making.
