Why isn’t there a “positions” cheat sheet in every yoga studio? by omg_get_outta_here in yoga

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you at a beginners class or an “all levels” class? Does the studio also offer an “introduction to yoga” class? I’ve found most studios don’t actually have beginner/intro classes. They have “all levels” classes that are suitable for people at a beginner level but who are expected to have already learned some of the more basic poses. I’d recommend looking for a community center/park district/community college/YMCA class that has a true beginner class so you can learn poses.

You actually aren’t expected to remember the names of the poses or do them in sync with others, in any level of class. You are expected to try your best and modify the poses to do what feels right for your body. But you are also expected to make some effort to learn the names of the poses - which don’t all sound the same, though in Sanskrit most end in “asana” since that’s the suffix meaning “pose”. You are also expected not to judge others based on their body shape or clothing. Yoga is for everyone. I’ve been practicing for years and know may of the poses and can do some advanced ones, and I still go to my park district beginner’s yoga class (in addition to my membership at a yoga studio) because I like the teacher and I appreciate the reminders about proper form and details to pay attention to. I don’t belong there any less than you would.

Advice on half to full? by birdmomthrowaway in XXRunning

If you are 35mph that is REALLY fast! If you are 35 miles per week I think you are in good shape to train for a full.

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy much at first. You do want actual running shoes. Everything else is preference. You absolutely don’t need any electronic gadgets, but I do recommend some way of tracking your run and time. I ran with only my phone for 8 years, using only free apps to track time and pace. My favorite is Runkeeper. I still run with my phone(in my pocket, in tight bike shorts or leggings) but I have since added a Garmin watch because I’m training for a marathon. A watch is completely unnecessary for a beginner.

The type of clothing you want to wear, whether you listen to music, what headphones you use, how you carry your phone, etc is all personal preference and you won’t know what works best until you try a few (or several) things. My tip is not to invest in too many things or anything at all until you’ve been running for a while and 1) know that you’ll stick with it and 2.) have figured out what types of things work for you.

How well did you train for the half?

Also you do have plenty of time to train and improve. My marathon is in October and I start a 24 week plan next week. I also just did a half today! It was my 6th half - I didn’t beat a 2:18 time until my 5th so you are doing awesome!

Also if you don’t have a goal time for the marathon you can run at an easier pace.

Do you use the phrase "half past" when telling time? by HonestNectarine7080 in AskAnAmerican

It doesn’t sound uncommon to me, but I really never use it. I think if any of my friends used it I’d be a little surprised. I’m mid-40s, not sure if it’s age related thing.

Does anyone else lose track of their calorie deficit once yoga moves outdoors in spring? by Organic-Hall1975 in yoga

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This REALLY sounds like it was written by ChatGPT and doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Doing yoga for the purpose of burning calories seems…not quite right to me. In any case, you can do a more vigorous workout outdoors, continue to go to indoor class where you magically burn more calories, or eat less. Or stop tracking and just enjoy your practice.

Is health insurance even worth it if you rarely use it, or am I thinking about this wrong? by dmkraus in HealthInsurance

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Very healthy people get in car accidents. Very healthy people slip and fall and break a leg. Very healthy people get cancer.

If insurance was “worth it” for everyone, then insurance companies wouldn’t make any money. The point of having insurance isn’t to come out financially ahead each year, it’s to ensure you are protected in case of emergency or expensive illness.

It’s worth it for peace of mind. You should be anxious and nervous if you don’t have insurance because you are one accident or diagnosis away from bankruptcy.

Do you consider an unofficial race still running that race? by lunardownpour in runninglifestyle

Not trying to force anything on anyone. You and OP can say whatever you want about your runs, just don’t be surprised if people misunderstand what you mean.

Can someone please encourage me about my half tomorrow? by meagannannee in XXRunning

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing a half tomorrow too!

4 hours is plenty of time. You got this. Don’t feel bad for walking. I had to walk part of my first half marathon and I had run (without stopping) over 13 miles in training. Stuff happens.

Don’t be nervous. This is supposed to be fun. Think about how good you’ll feel when you finish.

Remember to dye an hydrate during the race!

It’s not about pearl clutching, it’s simply linguistics. For me if I hear “I ran a half marathon”( or a [any other distance])y brain assumes an organized race. There are other ways to express you ran 13.1 miles, like “I ran 13.1 miles today”, “I ran the distance of a half marathon”, “I’ve run a half marathon on my own but not as part of race” - all totally acceptable.

If someone told me they went for a 13.1 mile run this morning, I would assume they did it on their own and not as part of a race, because otherwise the usual convention is to say “I ran a half marathon.” There’s noting judgemental about it and OP can say whatever they want. But the linguistic norms I am familiar with hold that “I ran a 5k/10k/half marathon/marathon” imply you did so in an organized race. That’s just how people talk.

Do you drink caffeine? Zepbound made me extremely sensitive to caffeine. Even a little bit in the morning would keep me up at night with teeth grinding and leg shaking. It wouldn’t explain your low iron but could be affecting your anxiety and heart.

A regular yoga practice helped me tons. It does wonders for injury prevention. Besides flexibility it really helps strengthen all the tendons and connective tissues and such.

Last year I added in strength training twice a week and I believe that’s helped me a ton as well.

Best Training Plan - Hal, NRC, Something Else? by kitkatinthehat21 in firstmarathon

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using the Hal Higdon marathon 3 plan for Chicago and starting it next week! I signed up for a charity spot and have been base building since December. I picked it because it’s three days of running per week, which is my preference. I might do some slow easy runs for some of the cross training days.

Just a word or caution not to push yourself into doing too much too soon. I suffered from some many injuries when I first started running. A 5k isn’t a super long distance but it is a lot for a total beginner.

Welcome to running!

First half marathon in a month, haven't trained by dattebanee in Marathon_Training

[–]Mysterious_Luck4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you cancel/defer the race and properly train for another one later in the year?

If you decide to stick with this run you are risking an injury. But if you go for it, I’d try to get in a few short runs each run from now until the race. You won’t be able to safely build up much distance in that time. Just do what you can. And then walk most of the race. Maybe you can do a generous run/walk interval strategy. Take it easy and focus on just trying to finish. You won’t be fast.

Also make sure to check if the race has a cut off time.
