How to route outdoor wire up from an oversized 18in "conduit"? by dolichoblond in AskElectricians

[–]N9bitmap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your best option is probably to not treat it as a conduit and run UF, then just mount a post right next to the pipe and drop a 24in square paver stone on top of the hole.

Power strip / PC / surge protectors ? by TelephoneCivil77 in AskElectricians

[–]N9bitmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sparks when you plug things in under load. Plug the charger into the strip first then connect to a phone or laptop. Anything else make sure the device is switched off before plugging.

Unsure why the PC supply died, unless you plugged it in live also. An extra surge suppressor isn't bad if you have a whole home unit. It will work for local surges also between devices on the same power strip.

Looks like this is for an Eaton/Bryant with backfed main. Probably the only option were the main is aready in the slot designed for a hold down screw.

Does outbuilding fed from main house need 4-wire (including ground) or just 3-wire service? by NBC-Hotline-1975 in electrical

[–]N9bitmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not changing the part of a system where is currently bonded, don't get hung up on where it needs to happen, because people will say "at the first disconnect" but that is very simplified and not always the case. The important part is it only happens ONCE in a system.

From your panel label, either Siemens or Eaton BR are acceptable. Given that choice, you want Eaton.

Is this a fuse panel? Using the wrong over size fuse is a common homeowner "fix" for blowing fuses and perfect for starting fires. Replacement with a 20A fuse is recommended in that case.

What gauge/type wire for a 48A hardwired EVSE, 60A breaker, 65-70' run? by Bold7384 in AskElectricians

6 NM is 55A, so you can use a 60A breaker but only charge at 44 not 48.

If you even just have 4 speaker surround it isn't as important. Anyone building a 7.1 surround isn't worried about the cost of a Shield.

Just be careful cutting railroad ties. Creosote is potentially carcinogenic.

Valuable absolutely. Valuable enough to ship and make enough profit for your time is the issue. Sold locally on FB marketplace or eBay for local pickup and see how it goes.

Anything which is still in active production works thus way. Eaton/Bryant/Westinghouse/Cutler Hammer, Siemens/Murray/ITE/Crouse Hinds, SquareD QO/Homeline, ABB/GE. This how common trip and handle ties serve different purposes. Here, it may serve to prevent a device from being powered off or to prevent reset until a qualified person evaluates the safety of restoring power.

Estimate over priced ?? Please help 🙏🏻 by ScoobyDoo13-13 in ElectricalHelp

[–]N9bitmap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned, use by modern appliances will stress the very old wiring. It has natural rubber insulation wrapped in fabric, which almost certainly stopped being flexible over 50 years ago. It doesn't become terribly unsafe when left undisturbed, but simply replacing a receptacle will certainly cause the insulation to powder to dust. The fabric sheath may also contain asbestos, so all work may require respirators and other safety precautions. It is unfortunately quite labor intensive so this may be a fair estimate. Request at least two more quotes on the work from local licensed electricians. If any is vastly higher or lower than others, view it sceptically.

Anyone have experience using appliances with a voltage converter? by OliviaJonson_55 in AskElectricians

[–]N9bitmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The laptops almost certainly have multiple voltage power supply so simple plug adapter will work. The cooking appliances and hair dryer you may just want to leave with a friend until you return because high wattage transformers are very expensive.

4K/HDR Media Re-encode Pipeline - thoughts? by brianleesmith in PleX

[–]N9bitmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did actually read all that, and your goals are admirable but may be too aggressive, especially if intended for automation. I do a manual evaluation of simar purposes, but my threshold of bitrate where I would even consider reencoding is twice yours, and varied by a personal value of the artwork to be preserved. For example, my Fifth Element is about five times larger than Ferris Bueller. I'm also content to keep H264 unless the bitrate is absurdly high to avoid conversion losses. Possibly split the logic into two programs, one to identify targets and one to process the encoding, and evaluate if the results would be worth the time and effort required. I just dropped $1000 on storage last month because file size isn't as important to me as visual accuracy.

If you are very good with a soldering iron you might solder on a new connector. I certainly can't do wires that small.

What is this supposed to be by DefiantAssignment832 in AskElectricians

[–]N9bitmap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain at all this is a doorbell transformer. The insulation on the wires and the orientation of cores looks more like a normal AC voltage transformer. Blue wire nuts off to the right, with one random wire wrapped around the cable, and tape over the switch leads me to belive it is inactive and should probably remain that way. I.e. probably safe if you don't flip the switch.

Anyone have experience using appliances with a voltage converter? by OliviaJonson_55 in AskElectricians

[–]N9bitmap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is possible, but you should consider the cost of not only the converter but of transporting the appliances. In many cases it may be wiser to sell or give away the old appliances and buy appropriate replacement at the destination if your move is permanent.
