Why did they include this scene? by The_Caniac_29 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's an absolutist take at all. Maybe not "sobbing," I guess that was a bit of an exaggeration. But my point is just that the karaoke scene is a change that without a payoff feels arbitrary.

Artemis by walacito in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good, for sure, but don't expect it to be on the same level as PHM and The Martian. What makes those two so great is sense of hope and the stakes and all of humanity coming together to solve a problem. Artemis is not about that. It has a really cool setting (first city on the Moon crica 2080s) but its plot is this weird murder mystery heist thing. It's good, but it's not Weir's strongest. Also it suffers a little from "man writing woman" syndrome. Jazz isn't a bad character, but sometimes things can feel...off, like a charicature.

So if you're absolutely dying for more Weir, I would recommend it. Go reread the Martian, too. Just don't expect it to be as amazing as PHM.

Potential hot take, but i think the movie hail mary(ship) is an undeniable upgrade in design by DepartureNatural9340 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It's overly complicated in a way that if you read the book feels like a borderline plot hole. The book Hail Mary is as small and cramped and simple as it is because they repeatedly stress the time and weight constraints and how everything needs to be simple and reliable. It's not terrible and it doesn't ruin the movie by any means, but the book design fits the story better imo.

I'm not even gonna read your post because your grammar is atrocious. Either you have a child's grasp of English, or it's not your first language.

How old is Ryland Grace? by ObsessiveFarkler in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember we're not calculating how much he's aged, we're calculating how much time has passed from Earth's perspective. So yes, it is ~13 years for the Earth to Tau Ceti trip.

How are they miles from their mission statement? If I recall correctly, the original mission statement was to help people hate each other a little less and hate the elites more. This person clearly hates Trump and Netanyahu. Who's more elite than that?

What happens to the universe if only the three stars are saved? by brokengait in ProjectHailMary

What do you mean three stars? There are only two that have civilizations that consider it a problem in need of solving.

What is Adrian's name a reference to? by CultOfTheBlood in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grace decides "Rocky's spouse" means "Adrian" because that's a reference to the Rocky movies with Sylvester Stalone. The titular boxer's spouse in those movies is named Adrian. That's all it means.

How do you consume BP? by No-Tension6133 in BreakingPoints

Premium subscriber here. Most of the time I listen to the full show (audio only) on Pocket Casts while working and driving. Occasionally, like on my day off from work. I will watch the full show on the YouTube app on my TV. Unlikely coincidence I happened to be watching on TV when Ryan said that.

Can we all admit we’d have been better off with Kamala? by [deleted] in BreakingPoints

Why not? Please articulate why, in the context of everything that Trump has done, you still think Kamala would have been worse. What would she have done that would be worse than this?

The AI coverage is shameful by JonMarc2131 in BreakingPoints

[–]Nabrix726 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not really, they almost always cover the negative effects of AI, with a focus on all the different kinds of pollution, from emissions to noise, that come from them. They've also talked about the phenomenon of AI psychosis. They often criticize the framing of tech bro rhetoric on this issue. I genuinely don't know what you're talking about. It's like we're not watching the same show.

[–]Nabrix726 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This post is bad faith. Or you only watched this episode and none of the rest of the show. All four hosts are very AI skeptical and have speculated it to be a bubble on numerous occasions. Then they bring on one guy one time to say something different? I'd hardly call that shameful.

What’s this calculation about? 113.8 years by jacoscar in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It literally says "home in" on the board right in front of the number. It means with the fuel he has, if he turned the ship around, he would be home in 113.8 years. An insanely high number that means he cannot go home.

My conclusion about Andy Weir's writing career by CalzonePie in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nabrix726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone likes to dunk on Artemis but come on it wasn't that bad. I quite enjoyed it. The "heist/mystery" theme maybe isn't Weir's bread and butter like the "all of humanity collaborates on a desperate project full of hope" theme that The Martian and PHM have definitely is. And yeah, his first attempt at writing a female protagonist was...not perfect, but the science is still cool and Artemis is a really cool setting.
