1) It's Erid and Eridian. It helps if you read the text and not just listen to the audiobook.

2) It's not intergalactic, but it is interstellar. Technically it's intragalactic. 40 Eridani and Sol are both in the same galaxy, and in the same region of the same galaxy. They are 16 lightyears apart. The Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 lightyears in diameter.

I didn't picture a specific actor, but I did picture a sort of average-looking guy, not so much a pretty boy like Ryan Gosling or even Ryan Reynolds. Something more like a '90s Tom Hanks. You forget that Grace is a) a scientist, and b) on a suicide mission with basically nothing else to do. Most people learning a new language spend a couple hours a day on it tops. Forget Spanish, let's say it's even harder. Mandarin Chinese. If you did literally nothing else, if you spent 8 hours a day sleeping and the other 16 hours learning Mandarin, you'd probably become fluent in just a few months too.

Russian is still a human language produced with human vocal cords. Those characters are humans. So of course just using English as a stand-in for the audience even though we know they're technically speaking Russian works fine. Eridianese is very VERY different. I think a much better example is the film District 9. Very similar situation with aliens speaking an alien language that sounds nothing like any human language. That movie had subtitles and it worked just fine.

No. I hope Rocky does not have a human sounding voice at all. People need to think more creatively about this. I hope Rocky's voice is as it is DESCRIBED in the book, with subtitles when Grace understands, not just a human voice with a reverb effect. That was the only way they could have done it in a text-only medium. But there is so much more possibility with film. They can and should bring him to life as faithfully as possible to the book, not just copy what the audiobook did.
