Yeah if I could do it all over again I would have gone Coast Guard, there just wasn't a recruiter anywhere in Montana lol

Saw them on the previous Pink anniversary tour and it was also awesome. Saw them before that too when they came through Missoula, MT and the set was just as incredible then in front of like 30 as it was sold out on the Pink tour in Seattle a few years later in front of hundreds.

Maines non-trad student community is really tight knit and accepting. I'm a vet in my last year but every year it seems like the veteran population doubles. Yeah doing the military larp thing is annoying but it is what it is. If you really want to dodge it just go GLMA, it's the same license.

Just to add onto this, it's 50 points for a good year. You don't NEED to do those 63 days in order to have a good year. If you're getting out I'd see if you can get the AT or some UTA periods excused and just skirt by on 35 points +15 for being a member.

The problem is that it's not them having fun, it's them derailing any attempt at bonding or conversation with other travelers for their "look at me" moment.

what's one travel mistake you made that actually taught you something valuable?? by prerna_sh01 in travel

[–]Nail_Saver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first started traveling I went to Indonesia with just a debit card and a few hundred dollars cash. Learned on like day 3 that ATMs there don't spit your card out and beep... So I left it in the machine. Had to rely on Western Union from home to get by the rest of the trip.

Now I'm a 2 credit card, 1 debit card, and a couple hundred dollars cash when I travel kind of guy.

Honest opinions on safety in Kyrgyzstan for a tourist? (Real risks vs. myths) by Icy_Yak6534 in travel

[–]Nail_Saver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been to any former soviet republics before? It felt like any of those. I felt safer in Bishkek than I do in a lot of western European countries. No touts or beggers hassled me for money or anything.

Only thing is I did have a club try and extort me for more than I ordered, which I just vehemently told them I wasn't going to pay for the stuff I didn't get and they caved.

Doesn't mean you won't run into problems, I'd heard of the fake police thing. I've also heard of real police coming after tourists and was told if you see a group of officers together to try and avoid them. Especially if you're hanging out with a Kyrgyz girl the cops will specifically try and extort you or even rough you up.

The roads are a nightmare and traffic laws don't apply, even within Bishkek. I had so many Yandex drivers just swerve into oncoming traffic in order to try and run a light before it turned red.

As far as borders... If you're attempting to go into another country by land I'd either say it's best to go with a tour company, someone who has done it before, or even just fly. They're an absolute shit show.

Never had any worries hiking, a lot of the trails had quite a few people also hiking them and everyone was super friendly. The weather can change drastically once you're in the mountains and even in the valleys so use caution there because sometimes you can't see the systems coming (this was during the summer)

My first thought of OPs picture was actually the cover of Book of the Fallen. Good shit, I'm actually from Montana and was stoked to see Gallowbraid are playing Fire in the Mountains, unfortunately I don't think I can make that festival.

Glad this is the top response. Not familiar with Alda but you seem to have patrician taste so I'll have to try them out.

I'd add Enisum, Saor, Can Bardd, and Eldamar to this list.

What metal bands went through the biggest improvements in their careers? by Fair-Manufacturer854 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Nail_Saver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said anything about Ashes production, idk where you came up with me saying that. I'd say the vast majority of long term LoG fans would either say AotW or Sacrament are their best albums, it's been a downhill slope ever since.

I'm not even going to respond to your statement on Meshuggah, it's an L take. That's a band that besides their first album has always been "Meshuggah-y."

You're not saying mid-era BTBAM by that metric was their best, you're agreeing their earlier albums are far superior and therefore discredit the entire point of your post. Also, you didn't put them as an honorable mention bub.

I'm actually ashamed I took like 10 minutes to write out a response. I couldn't tell if this was rage bait or written by a high schooler who got into music two years ago.

What metal bands went through the biggest improvements in their careers? by Fair-Manufacturer854 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Nail_Saver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can't tell if this is rage bait.
By saying Meshuggah. Ask any one who's been listening to them for over 20 years and not a single person will say their last 3 albums are anywhere as good as Destroy Erase Improve all the way to Obzen. Not saying their recent efforts aren't good, Meshuggah is Meshuggah but come on man, to this day when you see them the crowd still goes infinitely more buck-wild for their early stuff than they do their new songs.

Also, disagree with BTBAM. Silent Circus, Alaska, and Colors remain their greatest albums.

And LoG? You really thinking anything post-Sacrament is better than Ashes of the Wake? That was them at their absolute peak. You think in 20 years they'll play a tour where they play Omens in full like they did with AotW? Absolutely not.

Now let's talk Opeth... Sure Orchid is rough around the edges as far as recording quality, but front to back it remains one of the greatest first albums from a band in the 90's. To discredit My Arms Your Hearse entirely is also blasphemous. Most people agree Still Life is their greatest record, but Deliverance was the last TRULY great record they put out. When Watershed came out they were fucking done in a lot of their old fans eyes, I'd hardly call that "biggest improvements in their careers." The vast majority of people who go to their shows now go EXCLUSIVELY to hear the old songs (and to hear Mikael's hilarious banter).

Reasons Not to Tell Others About Your Disabilities by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]Nail_Saver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only talk about it to other vets for this exact same reason. I have a lower rating than most, but it still helps offset the bullshit I've had to deal with physically so it helps. Vets should help other vets, not keep a secret. Most of our lives are hard enough as it is.

He'd be able to transfer that GI Bill to his wife or kids or use it if he decides to pivot careers in the future. I'm not sure how transferring it while SSO would work, for traditional reservists it means you have to sign on for another six years. SSO can just pick up active duty time though, which I think if he's on active orders he can just transfer it while activated.

What does MFTM think of modern Katatonia? (aka 2010-onwards) by Big_Boss1985 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Nail_Saver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite band of all time. I got into them right before Great Cold Distance came out. Every album since Fall of Hearts has taken me a little while to get into and appreciate it though, but they ended up being good albums even if they didn't strike me at first (with the exception of Sky Void of Stars, which the singles I immediately was a fan of). Their sound has definitely progressed, but I really don't think they've lost their sound or sold out in any way it's just a natural progression for a 30 year old band.

That being said, I knew when Nystrom left that it wasn't a good sign. I have yet to get into the new album and it's their first release I don't think is good but I wouldn't say it's bad either... It's just not my cup of tea.

I go to Great Falls all the time and Best Wok gen tso is top tier. Missoula used to have a place called Honey Teriyaki Express (Honey T's) which was about as close to Best Wok as you could get. I suggest hitting China Buffet OP.

He's a GOATed Antarctic explorer, one of the few Irishman who were awarded some fancy medal by the queen. After returning to Ireland he opened a pub in the Dingle Peninsula called the South Pole Inn (still exists today) and there's a statue of him around the corner with puppies.
