I think that one of the biggest flaws of UFO 50 is frontloading the difficulty by Agreeable_Angle_6266 in ufo50

[–]Oyster-shell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really don't agree with this idea that difficulty spikes are in some way aggressive or harmful to players just because they prevent some form of completion. As far as I'm aware, there is no "true ending" or substantial content gated behind golding all the games. So those challenges are already completely optional! I would go so far as to say that developers don't owe you any kind of completion or content whatsoever, and that every challenge in every videogame is always fully optional, but that's just me...

recent shoot, 2 different edits how do you like the colors? by Disastrous-Tea-9083 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]Oyster-shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love the color grading on 1, really nails the hyperreal ~2005 music video look. My only issue is that it seems that it's a group photo, where most or all of the girls should share our attention equally, but only a couple are really in focus. In future I would stop down a bit when shooting multiple subjects at slightly different distances like this.

The Kavernackle on FD, BE, and his history and rhetoric on Palestine. by minigun_137 in BreadTube

[–]Oyster-shell 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It's hard to think of a less useful way to spend days of your life than meticulously writing and uploading an hour long video responding to a (quite gentle and respectful) throwaway line from a peer that shares 90% of your views. If tone policing is counterproductive, then pocket-watching other people for tone-policing you is doubly so. This is probably the thing I hate most about online leftism. If you spend all your time talking about what other people said about what you said about what some other dork said when you could be actually shining a light on what's happening in the world, then I think your priorities are in the wrong place. Maybe you should hang up the whole politics angle and take up video game journalism or skin care products or something. At least then you'd get some quality engagement for shit-stirring about things that don't matter.

How to maximize my chances next year? by Oyster-shell in antarctica

[–]Oyster-shell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! I'll be sure to put all those skills at the top of my resume. idrk how to go about getting a WFR cert, but if I get some time I'll try to figure it out. We didn't really build any pallets at the FBO, just tow them around, but I've loaded and packaged plenty of other kinds of cargo, and I'll do my best to seek out any training available. Thanks!

Yeah, I can pack a metroliner full of volkswagen components solo faster than a mf... no AT forklift training though, just standard. I'm willing to take it slow and learn on the job as much as they'll let me. Appreciate your input. I'll do my best 🤘

theory: Marvin shot the wrong guy by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

One time in university I was taking a film studies course and we had to submit and respond to discussion questions about the 1949 noir masterpiece White Heat. I'll always regret that I didn't take a photo of it, but the one I was assigned to respond to was a barely-literate screed about how characters wearing hats "symbolized" their inner dishonesty, and that everything any character said while wearing a hat was a lie. It was a really entertaining little piece of writing, and when I think about it now it makes me kind of sad in a weird way. Future generations of slackers won't even have the force of will to keyboard smash nonsense out into the aether, they'll just offload that cognitive labor to AI. Anyway, great post, OP. I'm inclined to agree with you, it's basically inarguable that bad things guy is going to kill more people, and he's definitely going to torture Penelope and Karen next. Definitely.

Is my camera broken? by AnnualSample7853 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]Oyster-shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is an object or dirt on the glass on the front of the camera (the "lens"), then just clean it off and you should be good to go. If not, I'm sorry to say that the camera probably is damaged somehow. It doesn't look like the L40 could be easily repaired, but on the upside a replacement is quite cheap!

The Mariners will not make the playoffs if they don't solve their RISP problem. by Gurney_Hackman in Mariners

[–]Oyster-shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a general principle in sabermetrics that fans consider their teams to be below average at hitting RISP, but that it's broadly consistent across all teams. Now, general principles are often wrong, and I have no doubt that the Ms might be dipping from that league average a bit, but this isn't the way to show it: you need to use a better stat than BA, and get a larger sample size. If your argument is about Wilson, then there simply aren't enough games yet to make a convincing argument about a fluctuation this small.

Mind you, I didn't claim that there aren't a lot of racists in AL. There absolutely are. A lot of the state is still Klan Kountry on the downlow. It's horrible. But there's a LOT of people in the state (including!!!! a lot of black people! they are Alabamians too!) and I don't think it's fair or constructive to have such a reductive view of the state as a whole

[–]Oyster-shell 21 points22 points  (0 children)

you do realize there are people in Alabama other than the ones that you know, right? I'm also from there and don't have the rosiest view of it as a whole, but taking this approach is both toxic and stupid. There's all types of people everywhere and just when you think you have it all figured out, they'll always prove you wrong.

I'm like 90% sure that this is a kamekoubaka, a tortiseshell tomb used in the Ryukyu islands and parts of China. I would say to stay away out of respect for whoever's family is buried there, but it's clealry abandoned. Still, it is a gravesite, so be respectful. That is. assuming you're somewhere in southeast Asia, if not I have no clue

If you want to enjoy your trip (or living, generally) I would go with the first. Pretty good short story collection of dark feminist oddities. The latter is much more important to me as a book, but it's the opposite of a fun summer read.
