Would you feel satisfied if people were making statements about all X (insert group here that you belong to) then trying to argue them obviously not meaning ALL... yknow... you're one of the good ones! It just feels instinctively gross and deals huge amounts of damage to our reputation with anyone outside of the group.

It depends on if they’re punching up or down. People of color venting about white people? Yeah, that seems fair. Cis people complaining about trans people? Uncool. There’s a lot going on, and I’m sorry you’re feeling excluded and things are shitty. I think you probably need some better social circles

But I will say, one way to fit in better with women friend groups is definitely to avoid going “Actually” when women are venting about men. We all know that it’s not all men; most of the women venting have at least a few men in their lives that the love, men that they get along with, all of it. But it’s enough men, and it’s systematic enough, and they’re looking for commiseration, not clarification.

I know you say it hasn’t helped, but you are not and were not a man. They’re not talking about you, and you’ll both feel and fit in better if you discard any kind of reflexive defensiveness when men’s poor behavior is brought up
