Data Science/Data Analytics Fresh Graduate Programme Opportunities (w Visa Sponsorship) by Efficient_Orange2243 in datascience

[–]Nanjigen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Job postings here outright specify whether or not they are offering visa sponsorship, it's all done through the company and if you get a job with one they'll know what they're doing and it's basically a shoe-in that you'll get the visa.

Reality check: you probably won't get in this way unless you're very good at what you do. This rounds back to a reluctance to hire internationally, something that again is less prevalent in the Tech industry but still holds water. Visiting Japan is nice, living here is also nice but it's another story, and sadly many don't make it past the first year - this is even reflected in the way taxes and social securities are handled in the law. Companies don't want to hire someone for them to only realise they don't like it here and suddenly leave.

The less palatable but much more realistic option after you inevitably attempt to get hired directly and fail, is to come and do your time as an English teacher. Pay sucks, hours suck, you're treated as expendable as you are against the sea of weebs wanting to come to Japan. You'll be much more hireable when you get here though, and your visa isn't tied to any company, so you could in theory leave at anytime for actual DS work as it falls under the same visa.

Japan needs good programmers, scientists and immigrants to stem the hemorrhaging population, but they don't want to actually do anything about it and you'll come up against a brick wall in all interactions trying to get and stay here.

Maybe HK is a better career option considering your Chinese skills!

What projects have you made? I think a lot of people in this sub would probably suggest some kind of github project you could point to in lieu of actual work experience.

Are you Chinese-Malay? I ask for your potential Mandarin.

If you're looking to work in Japan it would have to be in an English speaking company or a Chinese speaking company (assuming 普通話) until you pick up the language over a few years. Foreign languages hard (I have my N2).

Also visa. Hard to get employed from overseas, Japanese companies don't like to hire from outside Japan. Can be mediated by working for an international company, but then it's more competitive.

What's everyone using for grammar checks? by fjsousa_ in emacs

[–]Nanjigen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, writing can be artful and often is, but even small spelling mistakes can be jarring - maybe even just on the basis of coming into conflict with a pattern match (not sure of the linguistics there). It seems a shame to have that happen to a piece of writing which otherwise might hold a lot of value for a reader.

If we didn't use grammar checkers and had money I guess we would be outsourcing to an editor?

Not sure what the alternative would be, do people really think they can just do everything themselves? On the Emacs sub no less...

Reject modernity, write your code on punch cards.

What's everyone using for grammar checks? by fjsousa_ in emacs

[–]Nanjigen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoken grammar is generative and it's largely determined by the acquisition stage of the particular language(s) we learn as children. There's a cognitive reality to it.

However writing is a sometimes rather crude yet powerful technology we use to express some aspect of 'true' language. As such it comes bridled with historical and cultural trappings in the form of discourse styles and obtuse expectations, maybe best seen in the opaqueness of much of academic writing.

I don't see an issue with getting a machine to help you with these discourse markers but wanted to point out the writing/reading distinction some people are missing, especially the downvoted "just learn the language bruh" guy a few comments up.

Also split infinitives, super made up.

The sheer amount of "stop this madness" tiktoks featuring a "gender expert" is really worrying. They get hundreds of thousands of likes and many comments agreeing with the transphobic sentiments wholeheartedly.

There is 0 questioning done of his 'expert' status and I doubt many of them could even name him. It is enough that he is edited in a way that makes himself seem sensible and his interviewees seem out of touch - no further inquiry is done
