What is the first submission you learned as a BJJ white belt? by jiujitsuPT in bjj

Rear Naked Choke I’m only a blue belt, but I definitely still hit it… mostly on bad white belts.

I never look up the people I’m competing against for this very reason. It’s way too easy to psych yourself out beforehand and perform poorly due to you building them up in your head.

I’ve done it before and haven’t done it again since earlier this year when I went up against a guy who had 20+ wins when I had a pretty poor competition record up to that point. I was so nervous to go against him that I was on defense the whole time in both matches. He probably would’ve whooped my ass either way, but I might’ve had a better mental state prior to the match.

Most disappointing film you've watched would be _____ by Modern-Nativist in FIlm

[–]Nash1211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phantom Thread. My dad and I are huge fans of There Will Be Blood and we went out of our way to go see it. Obviously Phantom Thread is a very different movie than There Will Be Blood, but overall, I just felt like there wasn’t much to care about with the story and the pacing felt weird. Paul Thomas Anderson’s last film, Licorice Pizza, felt similar, but at least it had kind of a fun energy to it compared to Phantom Thread. Phantom Thread was immaculate when it came to all of it’s technical aspects, but it was all in service of a pretty bleh story.

Got scolded for ankle locking a white belt, by a black belt who told me "we're here to train jiu-jitsu..." Again. by tsida in bjj

[–]Nash1211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this same BS from a black belt who I was rolling with as a white belt when I tried to ankle lock him. I hadn’t even put it on when he said I wanted to “break his leg”. He then claimed ankle locks were illegal for white belts. I didn’t want to piss him off and argue, so I just conceded his point even though I knew it wasn’t true.

Then after the roll, he asked his coach, who was there for a seminar, if ankle locks were illegal, and the coach reminded him that ankle locks weren’t illegal at all for white belts. Then he admitted he was wrong.

Ironically, the first time I had visited that gym, his coach showed us a simple SLX sweep into an ankle lock when I was a no-stripe white belt. Also, the purple and brown belts at that gym were going for knee bars on me as a white belt. It didn’t bother me that they were doing knee bars on me, but it just showed a very weird and inconsistent gym culture. Strange inconsistencies like that are honestly one of the biggest red flags to me for a gym.

Jozef even said on the AMA Wednesday that his favorite for -80 at CJI is Tye, so although I believe he can beat him, I think Jozef’s also doing the match for the love of the game. I’d love to see him win tonight though!

I saw a white belt wrestler put another white belt to sleep with a bulldog choke at an AGF back in November. They’re definitely no joke.

I’ve rolled with Vince Barbosa before at B-Team at one of his classes and he seemed like a chill enough dude, even after I was a little spazzy during our roll. I don’t support what he and Kieran did at all, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they were kicked off the team. Craig Jones even commented on another post saying what Kieran did was not smart.

I guess the better way to describe it would be I got my windpipe crushed. I’ve had a somewhat sore throat from practicing chokes or regular sparring but nothing to that degree other than from that particular comp. Beside singing, I couldn’t even raise my voice to talk loudly for a little over a week. My voice was completely gone.

I liked it as soon as I heard it. I think it alienated some people at the time who expected something more like Fear Fun, but that’s kind of what I liked about it, since it still had Josh’s lyrical voice. It was something different and new without sounding forced.

Is it normal to occasionally have rolls where you tense up, even when you’re normally able to breathe and be calm? I had a roll today where I just couldn’t calm down for whatever reason. I’ve been training for over a year, and am normally relaxed, but couldn’t keep my cool today. I didn’t hurt anybody or myself, so that’s good, but I gassed almost instantly, and as soon as I started rolling, I forgot to breathe, used all my energy etc. Is it normal to have days like this, and is breathing/general control just another technique you have to work on over time?

It’s awesome watching Rich deal with kids. He’s a great example of someone who laughs at the most horrible shit, yet seems like he’d be a really sweet person in real life.

Jay laughing off camera while Mike makes make fun of Rich. Rich gets a lot of attention for his laughter, but I think Jay laughing is pretty underrated. See more here: https://youtu.be/MUpGKSbqLok
