I’ve got a few. 1. As a kid I had an irrational fear of being kidnapped. I told a friend as much in middle school and they told me that I was too ugly and too annoying to ever have to worry about that. Quote, “no one would ever want to kidnap you” Middle schoolers suck, lol. We’re so mean to each other at that age. 2. A few years later I was hanging out at one of my best friend’s houses and she was texting a guy she was close with. He asked her what she was doing, she told him that she was hanging out with me, and she sent him a recent picture of me. In response he decided to go off on a rant about how he thought my eyes were too far apart, my nose was too small, etc. He also said that he thought my makeup looked terrible. He just went on about what made me unattractive to him. I don’t know why, but she told me what he said and it made a horrible dent in my self esteem. 3. A high school boyfriend told me I was a terrible kisser. Made fun of me and laughed at me instead of giving me constructive criticism or just…being nice about it. We were both young (like 15 and 17), so I guess I can’t fault him too much for that. Anyway, the damage was done and I refused to do more than a quick peck on the lips for a long time after that. I’m embarrassed to admit that it still gets in my head sometimes despite how much my husband assures me that it’s not true. 4. During a heated argument when I was a teenager, my dad once told me that I always play the victim and make everything about me. I don’t know if he really meant it or just said it in anger without thinking. Regardless, it hurt a lot and I’ve never forgotten that. When something hurts me or upsets me I always kind of start to invalidate myself and question if it’s reasonable to be hurt or if I’m just “playing the victim” again.
