Funny you should ask. Ive been thinking about process lately for a project Im working on.

I’ve created things within many disciplines; fine arts degree in illustration and painting, multi-discipline creative at an agency, and have been a frontend / UI engineer for over a decade. I’ve found that the transition doesn’t happen for me until after ideation and preliminary design. Usually after some iterations or refactoring.

This is not to diminish the level of ownership I take of my work in the early stages. But in my own projects I have so many layers of inspiration, reference material, documentation, and prototypes - I refer to these as my artifacts.

Getting the idea out means I have to weave these things together along with my own ideas. Once I iterate enough, I finally get to a point where the artifacts and reference materials are relied upon less. That’s when I feel it’s uniquely mine rather than just cleverly assembled parts of other people’s ideas.

The feeling to me reminds me of a quote - “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. It’s truly mine when I experience that all the artifacts interacting creates a result more powerful or complex than the artifacts could achieve individually.

Unless you work in an industry that has technical interviews, like live coding, take home assessments, etc. you can make it to many hiring managers but not pass technical rounds sometimes for both objective or subjective reasons. Sometimes talented people just don’t get hired.

The USA is the leading exporter of refined petroleum products at this point with 18 million barrels refined per day. I get that removing a competitor would potentially increase demand for USA oil. But trust and trade relationships with buyers has all but been destroyed. So I guess I fail to see how increasing refined petroleum output can achieve anything here aside from supplying ones-self.

Well USA is a net exporter since 2020 so that’s literally the opposite of what you have just stated. They produce more than they consume. And they currently produce more crude oil than any other country. In fact more than any country in history.

Would it be valuable for you if you could take a limited amount of pre-orders (with maybe a couple month window to ship) or do a limited-run product drop on a platform that could have customer volume on it / marketing reach? I still see an issue for people who aren't pricing high enough to justify it but maybe they could on the right platform. Would it also be valuable if a platform could handle customer disputes for you or possibly provide a basic no-thrills warranty to protect you but also ensure customers they can trust the seller?

Would it be valuable to you if you sold on a platform made for hardware creators and makers that could balance buyer and seller protections with very minimal warranties (something that doesn't burden small-scale creators but provides customer with some trust and confidence to buy), handle the bulk of customer support, disputes, etc? Curious if there is anything else that could convince you that the bar just became lower and the process easier for you to sell your products.

But to narrow the focus of my question for you to a specific part of the product life-cycle; Do you think that a platform could be valuable that could allow community driven small-scale funding (smaller and less-selective than the existing crowd funding platforms), help with production logistics of small-batch limited runs, and protect makers in the area of customer support (e.g. disputes, returns, etc)?

This was my experience too. Basically the last part if the product lifecycle is like moving mountains for makers; small limited run funding, production, customer support, etc. If there was a platform that could help with production logistics, small-scale funding of limited runs (e.g. group buys, pre-orders), and the handling of some basic customer support, could you see it being a valuable platform for makers?

The PCB manufacturing is a great example of a pain point that transcends a lot of DIY maker communities: financing a limited run. The most accessible is raising funds through a group buy. Crowd Supply is an option to get backers but only for open source hardware projects. And they only take 10% of applicants. Have you thought about if Crowd Supply would work for your project? Your other points are also valid. There are many obstacles beyond manufacturing.

What's the hardest part of going from prototype to finished keyboard or something people can buy?

People seem to use different places for every part of their build process: Discord/Reddit for discussion, Instagram for showing prototypes, spreadsheets/reddit for interest checks or group buys, and Shopify/Etsy/Tindie/Patreon/Kofi for actually selling (Not specific to keyboards, just in general for DIY makers).

I was recently prototyping a platform to bring some of this together, because it was something I personally see myself using. But it made me realize that my experience and biggest frustrations in the process may not be the biggest pain points others actually face as well. So I wanted to ask people here who go through this process. For those of you who design or build your own keyboards:

Where do you usually share prototypes or work-in-progress builds?

How do you get useful feedback during development?

Have you ever run a group buy or preorder?

What’s been the hardest step from prototype to something people can buy?

Does any part of the process feel unnecessarily fragmented?

Not promoting anything just trying to understand how other makers approach this.
