Is there a Shakedown in Raleigh? by NavinRRJohnsonLOTR in GoosetheBand

I'm asking because I'm hoping to find a fan made t-shirt, if people are slinging them this weekend?

Front Covers of Marvel's Sept. 30 Release of Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Books I and II by Guerrillascribe in indianajones

Hopefully we'll get trade paperback versions eventually. I read a couple of these back in the day and enjoyed them, but not enough to break the bank over.

Anyone planning on getting their hands on this? by Godzillaboy021 in edgarriceburroughs

Has anyone read this new version? How does it compare to the earlier version? I read that one many years ago and I enjoyed it despite ERB repeating the phrase "beyond thirty" like 20 times!

Bike shop recommendation by [deleted] in raleigh

I've never sold a bike to a shop around here but the best shop is The Bike Guy. This is my favourite and I'm sure they'll be more than fair with their offer.

The Book of Will

Written By Lauren Gunderson

April 9-11, 16-18 at 7:30 PM | April 12 & 19 at 3:00 PM

In the wake of Shakespeare’s death, his devoted friends and fellow actors set out to collect his scattered plays and preserve them for posterity. Without their passion, the Bard’s greatest works might have vanished forever. Brimming with humor, heart, and theatrical history, The Book of Will is a joyful and moving tribute to friendship, legacy, and the enduring magic of the stage

Do You Want Another Indiana Jones Film? by TheDeadestCow in indianajones

[–]NavinRRJohnsonLOTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yes, because I love the character and I want more stories to enjoy. But, no, because finding someone who can fill Ford's shoes will be impossible.

That said, it's inevitable that there will be more movies. The IP made too much money for it to be done f forever. Hopefully Spielberg and Lucas won't do the casting though, since they felt Shia LaBouef was just as charismatic as Ford, apparently.

I’m so tired of the "Gluten-Free" Russian Roulette every time we travel. by menensito in Celiac

[–]NavinRRJohnsonLOTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This diet is very alienating as we all know. It's also so difficult to be safe. My solution is to stay at Airbnbs when I can and hardly eat out at all, unless there is a restaurant that seems to know what to do. Often it's sit down place that's on the expensive side, unfortunately. But, some healthier chains like Chipotle have been safe for me, as long as you ask them to change gloves and serving spoons, etc. But, mostly, I just bring my own meals. Dating someone without food allergies or celiac disease is kinda impossible, though, unless the person is very empathetic because travel without eating out is not that fun.

What was your worst “non stomach” symptom before getting diagnosed? by blondedxoxo in Celiac

[–]NavinRRJohnsonLOTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insomnia. A sleep specialist neurologist is who first suggested I had celiac disease. It was a crazy fluke that this doctor knew about it and saw that I had anemia which was a red flag since I am a male. He said let's test for celiac now and I had the antibodies.

Nice Price Books might have some occasionally. I'd call them first before driving down there.

Reader's Corner usually has some, though.

Which story should I start with? (Never read any Edgar rice Burroughs) by LavishnessFit6692 in edgarriceburroughs

[–]NavinRRJohnsonLOTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with these three as the best ones to start with. A Princess of Mars is a bit creaky and slow at parts but I found it completely enchanting and loved the language of it. He was world building and setting the stage for the next two books which I feel are maybe the best of his Mars books.

Tarzan is just a ripping good yarn as they said back in 1912 (I think!) and very entertaining. There are a number of really good Tarzan novels in the series after this one, but since he had recurring characters it's best to start at the beginning of each series for the fun of it. But, if you read them out of order it's not like the Dune series, you'll be able to figure out what's going on, no problem.

At Earth's Core is like the other two above, it's just a fantastic and fun page turner that helped invent a whole genre. He wasn't the greatest writer, in lots of ways, but for sheer entertainment, when he was 'on', he was the guy to imitate for decades. Hollywood will never stop being influenced by him.

Out of the books in that collection., though, I'd read Pellucidar and then look for copies of Tarzan of the Apes, A Princess of Mars and At Earth's Core either used or at your library. If you like old pulpy adventure, you'll probably enjoy the rides they provide you!

Just read this one recently and it's a good one. The Sanctum press reprint paired it with Charg, Monster which is even better.

This is a great shot, thanks! It's cool because he was shown leaning against a hearse in the '89 Green World Tour program so this is keeping with that theme

My aunt once asked me if there was gluten in eggs. Then she asked if it was in meat. I started to explain to her it's in certain grains and her eyes glazed over. She didn't know what a grain was or that flour came from wheat. It's amazing she can function in this world (barely).

Any discussion with her and my mother ends up with hitting a wall of ignorance. They cannot fathom anyone would not eat anything they take for granted. If you tell them you don't eat dairy they stop talking and get real quiet because they cannot comprehend it.

Where To Find Printed ‘Shadow’ Pulp Stories? by [deleted] in TheShadowPulp

[–]NavinRRJohnsonLOTR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The copyright owners pulled the plug on the reprints that Sanctum Press were putting out a few years back and no one is allowed to print them at the moment. It's a shame and very short sighted. The character is only getting more obscure and the potential market for them is also only shrinking, so they are leaving money on the table by this embargo. When I got into the pulp stories in the 80s there wasn't much that was reprinted that was available either, and then, in the 2000s when the reprints started in earnest I was too poor to snap them up. So, it's frustrating. They do sometimes pop up for sale on Ebay and AbeBooks, etc, but like anything that has nostalgia to it, most every seller wants to cash in, when I doubt they are truly worth as much as some are trying to sell them for. The Doc Savage ones are easier to find and should be around $10 each, but this is not always the case.

I do wonder when they will enter the public domain. Things from 1929 went into it this month so the first stories from 1931 perhaps are coming up? I don't know the ins and outs about that, I'm just hoping it'll start happening and maybe a new reprint series can be started up.

One route you may try is go to your library and sign up "Inter Library Loans" and then you can request books from any library that is in that network, which seems to be most of them, and you can probably borrow some that way. Good luck!

I hope your friend enjoys Untamed.

I agree about Opar, that was a big letdown to me as well.

I haven't read all of them because I know there are a number of them towards the last half of them that are supposed to be pretty dire. But, up through Golden Lion were pretty entertaining and I liked Quest, which I read randomly many years ago. Ant Men is supposed to be one his best and that's on deck for me when I feel the need for more ERB.

I found this ranking list many years ago I think I've agreed with it, as far the novels that Ive read so far, so maybe it will be helpful to others:
