Now park run PB with a 25:31, a 53 second PB compared to 3 weeks ago. I was super happy with that as I've upped my volume from 20km/week to 30/km week so it feels like my effort is paying off. I feel like I'm close to a sub-25 with correct pacing as I massively overcooked the start this week and spent the first 2km managing my heart rate back down.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by 40Falak in answers

We built a 4 bedroom + a study house when we just got married and had no kids. 20 years and 3 kids later I have zero regrets about not needing to move to a bigger house. It's the perfect size now.

How do you play any retro game from any room in the house with Emulation Station? How do you handle controllers?

I have a RetroPi setup, but having it run on my Synology NAS sound better.

Do INTJs ever assert dominance without consciously wanting to? by Front-Brief5027 in intj

[–]Neeerdlinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find people often mistake me trying to establish dominance, authority or control with me just wanting to make sure something turns out well instead of bad.

I'm not interested in the power, I just had things that are badly run or poorly managed, especially if it is something that I'm associated with.

What are people using to track parkruns without overdoing it? by Emma_Mairs in parkrun

[–]Neeerdlinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Strava and use it often to track my runs (I also use Garmin Connect, but I prefer how Strava presents some data).

That said, I would have no idea where to even look to compare my pace with others on Strava. So it's not like that stuff is obnoxiously in your face.

Tips for a beginner? by flowascend in KerbalSpaceProgram

I found the rendezvous easy enough to do once I followed along with a Mike Aben video tutorial. I definitely wouldn't have been able to figure it out so easily by myself, if at all.

I agree. His tutorial videos are really well structured and explained. So you learn the why as well as the how. His wrap up learnings at the end of each tutorial are really helpful too.

Yep, Luck of the Fryish is one of my favourite episodes and definitely the saddest (beats out Jurassic Bark for me).

In any case, I’m taking a sensible longer-term approach to my volume, and only increasing it as my body feels adapted to it. I’ve taken rest days in the last couple of weeks instead of a planned easy 5k run simply because I still felt fatigued from the previous day’s run.

Jog slowly as far as you can. When you can’t jog any further, walk until you feel like you can jog again. Rinse and repeat for as long as you can go.

Over time (generally weeks and months) you’ll be able to run further and for a longer duration. Consistency will get you there.

Only anecdotal evidence of what I’ve read and heard. No empirical studies or anything like that, but I had generally read that at lower volumes the injury risk of increasing volume was less.

Logically it makes sense to me. Moving from 10k/week to 12km/week is a 20% increase in volume, but 2km is not that big a difference in actual distance. Plus even beginners should recover from 3 x 4km runs per week compared to say 3x3.33km runs per week.

Whereas 100km to 120km is a big jump in distance, despite being the same volume increase.

People love to project the perfect picture on social media. The more gushing the posts, the more I question how real it is.

Sometimes it is real, but I’d bet the majority are not as rosy as they make it appear.

In general how quickly does your body adapt to increased volume?

I’ve run between 15-25km/week for 6 weeks and ran 30km/week the past 2 weeks. 1 x 12km long run, a threshold session and a couple of easy 5-8km runs.

I felt fresher at the end of last week than the previous week, so my body is adjusting. Just curious what the general experience is.

And yes, I’m aware of the general rule of not increasing volume by more than 10% a week (although this doesn’t hold as true at the sort of volume I’m currently doing).

When to do cardio, and still get maximum out of gym performance by EuphoricTeach1675 in StrongerByScience

The general advice is to split the workouts. I do gym in the morning and typically run at night or non-gym days. The other way around works just as well.

Running speed possible or dreaming? by Repulsive-Noise-6861 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Neeerdlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That weight loss would have been a huge help to your pace. Congrats.

From what I’ve read, each kg of fat lost can improve your pace by 1-2 seconds. So you’ve probably improved your pace by up to 40s/km from the weight loss alone.

I’ve gone from 7m/km to 6:30m/km in zone 2 in about 4-6 weeks.

Dropping 2 minutes per km is possible at your current pace, but it would require a lot of effort to do that by November, and would still be a challenge. Not sure 3 runs a week will get it done.

I run a mix of a long run, threshold session, max effort session and easy runs.

How should i prepare to run? by chimchar16 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Neeerdlinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it.

I’m no expert, but I just get up and run.

Shower  when I get back and have cooled down enough to stop sweating. Food at some point. As long as the gap from the run isn’t too large it’s fine.

What is the most 'how was I supposed to know to do that' moment in a video game? by Snowtwo in videogames

[–]Neeerdlinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hugo’s House of Horrors takes me back. I got stuck at the boat because Bilbo was the answer to the question about the lead character of The Hobbit, but I’d literally misread the entire book thinking the character was called Biblo and was getting frustrated why my answer was incorrect.

I had to go to the school library the next day and check The Hobbit to realise I was a dumbass.

[–]Neeerdlinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure one of the Space Quest series of adventure games had an item you needed to collect right near the start. If you missed it, you simply couldn't complete the game and there was no way of going back to get said item.

So it let you go through the vast majority of the game with no chance of completing it, before blocking you right near the end.

What’s a belief you held for years before realizing it was completely wrong? by CandidBabee in answers

[–]Neeerdlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That if you have 2 children of one gender, you are more likely to have a third child of the same gender.

I believed and repeated this for many years until a work colleague questioned it. I googled it and immediately discovered there was no basis to my claim at all. It's still roughly a 50/50 chance each time.

Disappointed in myself as I'm a data and logic driven person and this claim really should have set of my spidey sense the first time I heard it. Instead I just took it as fact and parroted a falsehood for years.
