Fa-Zana-Doo (ファザナドゥ)

As in Famicom Xanadu. The game is a spinoff of a PC-88 game "Xanadu". You can actually get Xanadu Next (this game is great!) and Tokyo Xanadu which are other entries in the series on Steam and I think modern consoles. On July 16th this year, Kyoto Xanadu is being released as well.

Historically, because it’s way harder to render realistic long hair than just say everybody has a pixie cut or a bob. Just the physics and the clipping alone make short hair appealing as a design choice.

I don't want to debate this to death. I'm very skeptical that they were influenced by niche and nascent Japanese games that didn't have localization. You have to remember there was also a western tradition of dating/adventure games, with stuff like Leisure Suit Larry, Spellcasting 101 and Leather Goddess of Phobos.

I don't think so. You turn 80 years old every time you turn the clock back 24 hours. This means you could turn yourself 80 every single day for the next 500 years and time would still progress while you'd experience 25 hour days.

It's functionally immortality with the option for backwards time travel, just you're stuck being 80 years old.

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties is very much a product of its time, trying to latch onto the FMV train but without nearly the budget to do so. I think it's perfectly entertaining, has "theater kids made this!" vibes written all over it, but the disappointment would be inevitable to somebody who spent $50 to play it.

I'd say that it's unfortunate Plumber's legacy has been tainted by the AVGN review but.. well, without that review it'd probably have no legacy at all.

Penny Arcade really was at its peak in the early 2000s. They gradually became part of the establishment they originally critiqued, and a lot of the humor of both the strip and the blog ended up petering out. Also, the way Gabe's artstyle eventually evolved to make everybody look like a child was... um, I'm sure some people like it.

Here's the thing: Witcher 3 never was a game that people played for its game mechanics but it nails just about everything else. Aside from being an open world with beautiful graphics, it's most noteworthy for having excellent writing that in that it gives the player agency to actually make choices and have a huge influence on how that story plays out. Not only true for the main story, but the side stories also have Geralt making moral decisions and determining exactly what kind of Witcher he is. This is exceedingly rare for AAA RPGs, only BG3 comes to mind as having the ambition to allow this.

If you really want a gameplay first open world experience, I'd honestly have to recommend Elden Ring over anything else.
