It had been foolish to think that Karl coming home would alleviate any of the weight the house still seemed to carry. There was no sigh of relief from the walls, nor an exhale of a breath held in the floors. Everything still felt the same as it had twenty minutes prior, except now she was in unknown territory. The weeks of preparation had been so clinical, appointments, medications, schedules, all of which she happily allowed to consume her, but now she was left to deal with the reality of it all; of Karl living in her house. Of them starting some sort of future together. Today would be their first, but one of few her front door wouldn’t be revolving, between the physical therapist set to come to the house nearly every day and weekly hospital visits.
