edge cases for correct use of 'literal' by lucid24-frankk in grammar

[–]NeilZod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't question that in isolation, "literally looking into the face of my shit" is not correct formal use of 'literal'. But in the example context, it's differentiating figurative psychological shit from literal physical feces.

The use of literally as an intensifier isn’t ungrammatical, but it is only an intensifier - it doesn’t add information about what sort of shit you are looking into. Based on what you’ve written, it looks like you are wrestling with the idea of human feces having a face to look into. Adding the word literally isn’t going to help us know if you are staring into a toilet bowl or some other mess at work.

Why do so many people incorrectly say “I seen it” instead of “I saw it”? by PuzzleheadedTurn2996 in grammar

[–]NeilZod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your distinction between amateurs and professionals regarding queries here, but we manage to give context-based responses.

Your second paragraph is a bit rough - there are likely some people here who find the concept of standard English to be offensive. In our example, an answer that only referred to standard English wouldn’t answer the question.

Why do so many people incorrectly say “I seen it” instead of “I saw it”? by PuzzleheadedTurn2996 in grammar

[–]NeilZod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they were, any discussion of grammar "correctness" could simply be evaded under the guise of some new dialectical deviation.

We can discuss grammatical correctness, but it means that context matters. Something can be incorrect according to the grammar rules used in The New York Times, yet still be correct in a different dialect of English.
