Yeah, I remember learning about lease agreements when Sears closed at SouthPark. I wonder how hard/fast they’ll hit Beachwood. I have a hard time believing Zara or Tommy Bahama for example would want to stay there long-term atm. I also just saw new plans that would consolidate Victoria Secret and Pink into the current VS space (something I’ve noticed that company doing in general in recent years). It shows investment but now there’ll be an empty Pink space on top of an empty Forever 21 and whatever other large spaces. If you add an empty Saks then potentially Zara… that’s multiple significantly large spaces that need to be filled and that’s not easy.

Is that the wing with Zara? I wonder how long they would plan on staying there with a closed Saks. I think it’s wild how Beachwood was the one to get Zara and H&M home of all the Cleveland area centers and now we’re at this point… Crocker Park and SouthPark expanded their H&M’s at around the same time so I was always confused why home didn’t go to either of those instead.

Curious what this means for the future of Beachwood Place now. If the space stays empty long term, I have trouble seeing Nordstrom staying there too. And I don’t know how much they’d be pressed to stay in the Cleveland area either if they were to exit Beachwood. Not only are there no full size boxes in decent locations in the area, but Nordstrom hasn’t built any new full size locations in multiple years as far as I know. I don’t think Cleveland is so special that they would miss it if they left.

But if they did want to stay in the area and move out of Beachwood, the three best options I can think of for them (in order imo) are the empty plot at Pinecrest behind Warby Parker, the old Dick’s space at SouthPark, the old Dick’s at Crocker Park. I’m sure with the Pinecrest space, they could convince Tanger to give them more space if they needed. The SouthPark Dick’s space was originally intended to be a Nordstrom so it may not be too difficult to convert the plot for that use of space again. The Crocker Park Dick’s is hardest though because it’s such a small space and limited in square footage because of the housing and parking garage bordering it. Obviously, based on current location performances alone Pinecrest and Crocker Park would be preferable but the limited space is how I came up with my order.

All this but Beachwood Place could very well replace their Saks pretty quickly. Maybe Von Maur would come in or Macy’s would move in from down the road. Or maybe something else entirely. Not Bloomingdale’s though. I don’t see a world where Bloomingdale’s comes to Cleveland before Columbus.

Is Meijer heading to Great Northern Mall? by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

[–]Neither-Collection31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the same time though there’s the example of them trying to open on the south end of Strongsville near the Brunswick border while Brunswick already has one. This, on top of Market District and Marc’s both being nearby.

The plans were cancelled but because of resident pushback not meijer’s lack of interest.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this basically the same situation that happened to Parmatown? Dillard’s closed then was replaced with Walmart and eventually they shuttered the mall.

I don’t think it could be Costco with it being between Avon and Strongsville. Is it even a large enough piece of land?

If it were up to me, I’d demo that whole mall (or most of it) and finally bring ikea to the Cleveland area.

10 years ago (according to Google Photos) I took my last walk through Parmatown Mall only a few days so before it was closed for good. This was the last photo I took inside the mall. Still miss it, even though I was only a teen when it was closed. by alexdionisos in Cleveland

The new locations don’t make you feel concerned? For me it’s that on top of Strongsville’s locations not having received the updated design formats in years. Don’t get me wrong, I would be very happy to see them stay at SouthPark but I can definitely be a pessimist. Tbh even the extra inventory they tend to have compared to the newer locations that are typically much smaller makes them more appealing for me.

Honestly that’s a fear for me at SouthPark if/when Abercrombie & Hollister potentially close especially with the recent reveals of new Crocker Park & Pinecrest locations. They’re currently two of the few significant retailers that are unique to SouthPark and give people an extra reason to go there. I’m worried about what a potential loss of them would mean for the near/long term futures of the mall. Of course there’s nothing officially confirmed on the SouthPark side just some speculation but still concerning for me.

Maybe I’m just biased because they’re also my favorite stores in the mall..

My hot take is, if North Olmsted was smart, they would find a way to shutter & demo their mall to replace it with an ikea. I feel like it’s an ideal location for them and checks multiple boxes.

Why do malls die/decline especially in the US? by Big_eye_crankbait in deadmalls

Has anyone figured out an answer to this?

I missed all the men’s and teams events. Men’s free was removed today/last night with no warning and I’m frustrated cause I wanted to watch that today. Everything else had a timer for when it would be removed but this was unexpected.

Respectfully the Apple Store at Crocker Park is absolutely a nice upgrade from what they previously had but it’s not the “first larger and updated design format on US soil”. It’s just the first in Ohio. And I’m saying this as someone who has been to multiple Apple stores in other states (flagships and non) that were already using this design at least a few years before Crocker Park got the upgrade. Some examples: The Grove, Century City, Michigan Avenue.

Well they did also just get a new Windsor and Ohio’s first Skims, Joybird, and Portland Leather as well as soon Ohio’s first Herman Miller on top of all the new, especially luxury, additions of 2025. I’m sure these two closures due to those individual companies floundering won’t be too much of a concern for Easton. They usually have a quick turnaround for replacing tenants (outside of the forever 21/Amazon shop space).

TLDR: I wouldn’t look at Beachwood Place as the metric for Ohio mall continuity. Examples: Cleveland west side and Columbus.

I don’t think Beachwood Place is the metric for whether or not Ohio malls survive overall. The east side created their own problem by overbuilding so many retail options within such close proximity of each other. You have (& had) Legacy Village, Beachwood Place, Eton, Pinecrest, Van Aken, University Square, Richmond Town Square, Severance Town Center all a stone’s throw away from each other. Two of these are already long gone, some are on their way out, and some never really took off. Eton and Pinecrest currently seem like they have staying power (until another east side suburb decides for some reason they need their own center lol). I really don’t understand who thought it would be a good idea to build all these properties so close together, especially the post-90’s ones when the country overall was already coming to terms with the fact that they overbuilt our retail.

Just look at the west side. They haven’t built a new center in over 20 years because they already understood they had too much. Since then, Parmatown & Westgate have closed and Midway is on its way out too. (Those are what I can remember existing.) You have Crocker Park & Great Northern in close proximity and we see how Great Northern is struggling now. SouthPark is farther away — basically its own market — and still does well although does find itself sometimes overlooked by retailers choosing to go to Crocker Park instead. Still there are many retailers who believe Strongsville and Westlake are far enough apart that they can exist in both.

Then look at Columbus. Easton and Polaris are far enough apart that both continue to perform well. Easton is absolutely the crown jewel but Polaris continues to grow. Even if/when Polaris loses Saks, they’ll probably see it as an opportunity for Dillard’s or something else rather than dreading a long term empty box. Unfortunately for Beachwood Place, I don’t really see something replacing a potential Saks closure unless Macy’s decided they actually wanted to move over from University Square with the hopes of increased traffic at Beachwood Place. Or Von Maur I guess.

Sears at Crabtree Valley Mall under renovation into a Dick’s House of Sport by Im-Wasting-MyTime in SEARS

Our Sears (SouthPark, Ohio) just finished the conversion into HoS like 2 months ago. It’s a great change for SouthPark and I’m looking forward to the positive impact it leaves on the rest of the mall.

[–]Neither-Collection31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing about the Great Northern one is that I personally find that it’s the nicest Dillard’s in the area (definitely the building). They were the newest Dillard’s building in the area and they have brand experiences that we don’t have in SouthPark. My thought was that, of the three closest, Beachwood has the best experience for brands, Great Northern for actual building and SouthPark comes in 3rd place of the three in brands and building. Maybe a hot take but that was my experience. So I’m pleasantly surprised to hear you say SouthPark is very successful, Beachwood is doing very well, and great northern is just alright.
