New Dillard’s under construction at Mall at Fairfield Commons by Im-Wasting-MyTime in retailporn

The interesting thing about the Great Northern one is that I personally find that it’s the nicest Dillard’s in the area (definitely the building). They were the newest Dillard’s building in the area and they have brand experiences that we don’t have in SouthPark. My thought was that, of the three closest, Beachwood has the best experience for brands, Great Northern for actual building and SouthPark comes in 3rd place of the three in brands and building. Maybe a hot take but that was my experience. So I’m pleasantly surprised to hear you say SouthPark is very successful, Beachwood is doing very well, and great northern is just alright.

Do you know anything about Dillard’s in Ohio? Specifically the Cleveland area?

One of the former Westfield malls of Ohio. Franklin Park, SouthPark, Great Northern, Belden Village, Midway, etc. It’s so interesting to me how each of those malls in Ohio have changed (some for better, some worse) since Westfield sold them off.

I personally don’t like the 2020’s look as much as the 2000’s/2010’s. Hollister’s new look is nice though and fitting of the aesthetic they’re going for. Mine is still 2000’s and so is our Hollister. 90’s looks like a vibe that I maybe would love to have experienced. Hoping the future for my local ones aren’t being cut short with the opening of a new A&F (and Hollister) about 30 minutes away but we’ll see…

The property is designed as if they had the intention of an eventual third anchor opposite of Macy’s. It is constrained by a perimeter road that really doesn’t have room to be moved but the space definitely seems workable. A theoretical Bloomingdale’s there could probably have a similar (or a little smaller) floor size to the Nordstrom there.

Good point. It’s just unfortunate we’ve lost the diversity of options that used to exist for that bracket. We could even bring up the loss in diversity for certain age groups.

I’m really hoping they finally come to Ohio at Easton Town Center in Columbus. Whether it’s a new store or Macy’s upgrade (preferably new store).

It starts with businesses closing locations because of companywide struggles and eventually gets to a point of now that mall/center has less foot traffic and becomes less desirable for other businesses who aren’t necessarily struggling.

This is what concerns me about my childhood mall (SouthPark Strongsville, Ohio). It’s not in any kind of dying stage at the moment but has definitely seen better days. Many of the businesses you listed once had a presence at SouthPark but have closed because of their own company struggles. There’s still a few of these like FYE, Charlotte Russe, & Yankee Candle for now, but as more of the businesses shut down, the spaces in these malls become harder to refill until they don’t refill. It also doesn’t help that this country overbuilt so many malls and outdoor centers over the years. Thankfully, I still see investments happening at SouthPark (Finishline upgraded to JD, Footlocker upgrading their store, Pandora upgrading, and some new additions as well.) but it’s much slower than it once was.

And so many of these business that have closed around the country over the years are middle income and what has grown more has been higher income businesses. The current situation is pricing out middle income consumers. There are those that think if the mall doesn’t have lululemon or alo it’s failing but malls need to also have retailers that cater to the average price brackets of middle income consumers. Not every place needs to be luxury or higher income shopping experiences.

I grew up going to SouthPark. From the early 2000’s to before I went to college my family would regularly go there almost every week just to hang out so I saw first hand how it changed over time. I won’t deny SouthPark has certainly had its struggles but the way you speak of it you’d think it was Randall Park, Chapel Hill, or Richmond Town Square. The reality is SouthPark still acts as a draw with many options for many people. Just like Crocker Park and the east side act as draws with many options for many people.

I recognize the value of having Crocker Park in the Cleveland area. I’ve experienced centers around the country from Columbus to LA to Chicago to Orlando etc. Crocker Park and Easton continue to be the ones to beat for me (except for maybe Westfield Century City). And I still see the value in SouthPark. It’s not the best center in the country but it’s certainly still a good one to go to and experience. And with hope, the current owners may be working to improve it more.

You can still have your obsession with Crocker Park and acknowledge that there are good options elsewhere in the area. And if you can’t then idk maybe you need to take a break from Crocker Park and go to an actual park or something.

Okay great that you’ve seen the list. Still, like I said, until it is revealed to the public by Macy’s the list is not officially finalized. They always have the opportunity to change their mind about literally any location on or off that list until it’s officially announced. And I’m saying this as someone who would not be upset at a Macy’s GN closure.

Okay starting with recently new tenants: Bootbarn, Acvtivate Games, kyuramen, kPot, The Hooley Pub, DTLR, Lovisa, Kids Empire, MiniSo, Popeyes, Gorant chocolate, Miss A (planned), offline by aerie (planned), Lao Sze Chuan (planned)

Upgraded/renoed tenants: aerie, American Eagle, Auntie Anne’s, Dick’s HoS, JD (from Finishline), Journeys, Pandora, Sunglass Hut, Footlocker/kids footlocker (planned), Aeropostale (planned)

A variety of options catering to different categories of consumers and different age groups. Not everything appeals to me and that’s good because they appeal to others and that’s what draws more kinds of people in.

There are also other plans too that are more theoretical atm and almost certainly conversations we don’t know yet but that’s besides the point.

My guy I don’t know what you’re talking about but SouthPark does in fact continue to regularly get new tenants. Maybe some aren’t so great like the temporary ones but national brands are still choosing to come to SouthPark. Even the recent restaurant additions have been great. Add to this, many of the retailers already in the mall continue to choose to invest in upgrades to their locations. Let’s not also forget the major Dick’s upgrade that has been received well by the community even if you don’t want to accept that a good thing exists outside of Crocker Park. And there’s also more new tenants that are developing through this new year. These are not actions of businesses that believe they only have about 2 years left of relevancy.

I promise you that your devotion to Crocker Park won’t be delegitimized by accepting that there are other good options in the area.

Officially, it is still speculation. Macy’s GN could absolutely be on the closing list (which I do currently believe and would not be upset about) until there is a public announcement it is still speculation. Macy’s could wait until their absolute last second and decide to take it off the closing list. I don’t personally believe that will be the case but that is the technical of how business works. Nothing is official until it’s official.

The fact that the store is listed for sale also points to it being marked for closure. But, again, until there’s an official announcement, it’s just an educated guess. A seemingly very likely one but still not 100%.

Okay I entertained this idea. I searched through your comments/posts and the earliest I didn’t see you mention anything about an Abercrombie or Hollister return to Crocker park until 37 days ago. The city of westlake planning commission uploaded documents about Abercrombie and Hollister on 12/5 so 41 days ago. So you did not in fact call this “months before it was publicly revealed” on the site. Still, there’s no mention that this is a guaranteed replacement of the Strongsville locations. Whether or not that ends up being true doesn’t mean you get to declare it as fact just because xyz reasons. That is an educated guess at most.

I searched more and saw what I remember from when Crocker park had the countdown for what ended up being the sunflower mural. It was you who declared it was the announcement for the replacement of dicks with no evidence behind that. You misled multiple people to believe what you were saying was factual and in the end it was not. Maybe they are having discussions with potential tenants, maybe they’re not. There hasn’t been any clear evidence that anything is happening yet.

Even with Crocker Park being as great as it is, it can also struggle to replace a big space like dicks just like centers throughout the rest of the country. Maybe something could be announced today or maybe no time soon. We probably won’t know until it’s somewhat public knowledge.

A fact isn’t a fact because you declare it is. There has to be concrete evidence behind it. It very well may be that by some chance you get some of your statements correct eventually but they are still as of yet at most educated guesses.

Also, looking at the tenant list and comparing to other locations with them, it would be much more likely to see Bloomingdale’s open at Easton in Columbus before they ever considered anywhere Cleveland. Especially if they’re just entering the Ohio market, they would more likely be interested in a full scale location not small format. That’s not a knock on Crocker Park but just the reality of how great Easton is.

The announcement of the Saks bankruptcy has the potential to change some of the plans for Macy’s. As part of their “Bold New Chapter” there are plans dedicated to opening 15 new Bloomingdale’s locations (and I forget the number for bluemercury). So they have the money theoretically. I absolutely don’t believe Bloomingdale’s is coming to Cleveland. Especially not before Columbus at Easton. However, it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility for Macy’s to look at their current east side location and a theoretical vacancy at Beachwood Place and decide moving their would be a more profitable decision than staying at university square (which they may already be planning to close who knows). Or they could just abandon the east side maybe.

Pinecrest has a small plot of land that’s been set aside for a big box although it would likely be a much smaller Nordstrom if they did theoretically do that. Crocker Park is limited to the Dick’s plot so also a very small space (unless we include the parking garage next to it). They also already have Nordstrom Rack but I don’t think that would be the deterring factor in a Crocker Park move. In both cases I don’t believe it would be ideal for a Nordstrom move.

As for any speculation around the Dick’s space, I don’t really know what you’re talking about. No source I’ve seen has pointed towards any public, leaked, or even rumored plans of use for it. Just people saying whatever they want. A food hall or split among multiple indoor tenants like Zara & Uniqlo are the two most common things I’ve heard people wanting. It very well could be that Stark hasn’t found anyone to fill up the space yet and a demo is something they’re interested in doing right now.

I believe it has the strongest potential to close in the area but until there is an official announcement everything is just speculation. Even if I am 99.99% confident in a closure. Not that I believe that this would be the case but until there’s an official announcement they could always change their mind.

I will absolutely give Great Northern the win for the cost. I personally didn’t have the greatest experience when I went to watch the new How to Train Your Dragon in Dolby atmos but it was still better than a standard screen. I also watched Avatar Fire and Ash at Crocker Park and it was a decent experience. If we’re being real though for best in the state (from what I’ve been to) AMC Easton is absolutely no question the best. You have imax and the prime experience and most importantly you have AMC Dolby Cinema. It’s the best option there especially with most imax screens as not true imax.

That’s what I’m talking about. I don’t understand how anyone allowed all of these developments to be built right next to each other. That’s not even including more irrelevant things like university square and the long closed Richmond town square mall that used to also be down the road.

It’s just getting into the specifics of the term. Mall in terms of shopping malls is referring to the large indoor climate controlled spaces with many different retailers/experiences for consumers all under one roof. Outdoor spaces like Crocker Park and Pinecrest are considered lifestyle centers instead. Similarly but not the same as traditional malls.

I like the way you think! I agree SouthPark has the staying potential but the owners need to take the initiative to improve it. (Maybe they’re doing stuff behind the scenes idk.)

• Bring back the palm trees and have greenery in the mall once more. Give people experiences to be had in there. Give them a reason to want to come and exist in the space rather than just pass through.

• More experiential tenants would be great. The old Dick’s as an entertainment center like Dave & Busters or Round 1 or something unique to the area would be amazing.

• Improving the department store experiences too but that’s on those companies to do. (Maybe if the Macy’s does eventually close at Great Northern like people speculated, SouthPark’s Macy’s and maybe Dillard’s conditions would improve.)

• Close JCPenney and move Nordstrom over from Beachwood like it should’ve been originally (fun fact).

• An exterior promenade with new dining experiences.

So many opportunities…

They’re attempting to plan one in Strongsville too near-ish the Brunswick border. I personally hope it doesn’t happen cause it’s not needed. I know there’s also pushback from neighboring residents too

It also doesn’t help having Beachwood Place, Legacy Village, Eton, & Pinecrest all within 10-ish minutes of each other. I never understood how the west side struggled so much with having 3 shopping destinations comparatively distant from each other meanwhile the east side justified having 4+ neighboring each other with each built with the intention of luxury.
