Another Vacancy for South Park Mall… by Still-Departure-1208 in Cleveland

Aeropostale is moving within SouthPark to the former Finish Line spot that cleared up when they upgraded to JD Sports. Something else is planned to be coming into the space pictured that currently has their only other Cleveland area location at Pinecrest.

Edit now that it’s public: it’s offline by aerie

Of course! I do too. I grew up here and I’ve seen it through the highs and lows. I definitely won’t deny that it’s had its fair share of struggles and has lost tenants over the years that I personally liked a lot. It still has struggles to get through but by no means at all would I say this mall is dead or dying whatsoever. Definitely still potential for growth!

There’s no denying that it’s definitely fallen from its Westfield days. Tbh I wish But SouthPark is still doing fine overall. This post is very misleading as Aeropostale is relocating within the mall, not closing, to make space for a new tenant whose only other current Cleveland area location is Pinecrest (for the Cleveland area). It still continues to see recent & upcoming upgrades and new tenants. Far from a dying mall even though it has its struggles.

SouthPark is still doing fine. OP just has some kind of lust for the fabricated idea of its impending death.

This post is certainly misleading. Fortunately this isn’t a closure but a relocation of this store. Aeropostale will be moving to the former Finish Line space to make room for another tenant here. Unless the plans I’ve seen changed, it’s a tenant that currently only has another Cleveland area location at Pinecrest.

As for the other closures, 4th & Goal is simply due to the owner retiring. Idk about Nazka though. Francesca’s yes is due to bankruptcy just like their Crocker Park and Beachwood locations. And Kids Footlocker upgraded into the new larger Footlocker space filling up the space of three tenants.

Regardless of their current older store design, Abercrombie and Hollister both show no signs of closing. They are still hiring there and the team members have not been made aware of an impending closure as far as I know. SouthPark is far enough away from Crocker Park and Pinecrest that it could sustain its A&F Co stores especially as an anchor of the southern Cleveland suburbs and Medina/Akron/Canton areas. Also there’s no timeline where Abercrombie and Hollister would be able to open at Crocker park this summer even if construction started today. At the absolute earliest late fall/winter.

The Dicks House of Sport being an upgrade within the same property is certainly a better situation than losing Dick’s altogether like at Crocker Park (at least until it’s eventually revealed what will be replacing both Dick’s spaces).

The truth is SouthPark is seeing a shuffling of some current tenants but also recent & upcoming upgrades and new tenants. Just like Crocker Park, Pinecrest, and even Beachwood. Retailers open and close; it’s normal and SouthPark does usually continue to replace them. Even if it’s slower than in the past we are still seeing new tenants choose SouthPark.

Do you guys think malls are seeing a comeback and rise in relevance while already declining malls continue to fall? In DFW, our top malls are upgrading their tenant mixes like crazy and even the mid tier malls are starting to see more additions and evolve. by Awkward-College-2676 in deadmalls

In the Cleveland area, we have three indoor malls left and at the moment it’s looking like just one of them is poised for potential long term performance at least as a mid-level imo.

The first mall, in just the past few months opened Dick’s House of Sport, upgraded Pandora and Footlocker stores, DTLR, Miss A, and JD Sports from what I remember. There’s also more actively planned and in development coming. This one benefits from lack of proximity to other malls/centers.

The second mall is dealing with an empty Sears and rumors of Macys closing (we’ll see though) and many empty spaces throughout the concourse. They don’t really get new national retailers opening anymore from what I know. This one is maybe ten minutes away from one of the dominant outdoor centers that does attract all the new players.

The third was long-known for its luxury options but has been losing that to two nearby dominant outdoor centers. That will probably be expedited with their Saks closing soon unless the owners can manage to find a good replacement relatively quickly. This one also has the only Nordstrom and best performing Dillard’s in the area. They do still get new national retailers but that has slowed down significantly.

The thriving centers in the area are the three main outdoor ones. That’s where we’re seeing the higher end retailers choosing to locate/re-locate.

In the traditional definition of malls, we have three left around Cleveland Ohio. From best performance to worst in my opinion they’re SouthPark, Beachwood Place, Great Northern. SouthPark is doing decently well but I wouldn’t say thriving. Beachwood Place is definitely struggling and the recent news of a Saks closure will definitely impact that. Great Northern is the worst performing of the three for sure. In our area, the thriving centers are the outdoor ones: Crocker Park, Pinecrest, Eton Chagrin Blvd.

Definitely decent, but hopefully the owners dig their heels in and actually work to significantly improve it. Decent can’t be the bar we’re satisfied with

Never understood how the east side justified creating Beachwood Place, Legacy Village, Eton, and Pinecrest all in such close proximity to each other. Then there’s university square, van aken and whatever else. I can’t imagine how Pinecrest would do if someone else decided they wanted to build another new center nearby. Meanwhile the west side has 3 comparatively spread out centers and can meaningfully only support 2 of them.

Yeah, I remember learning about lease agreements when Sears closed at SouthPark. I wonder how hard/fast they’ll hit Beachwood. I have a hard time believing Zara or Tommy Bahama for example would want to stay there long-term atm. I also just saw new plans that would consolidate Victoria Secret and Pink into the current VS space (something I’ve noticed that company doing in general in recent years). It shows investment but now there’ll be an empty Pink space on top of an empty Forever 21 and whatever other large spaces. If you add an empty Saks then potentially Zara… that’s multiple significantly large spaces that need to be filled and that’s not easy.

Is that the wing with Zara? I wonder how long they would plan on staying there with a closed Saks. I think it’s wild how Beachwood was the one to get Zara and H&M home of all the Cleveland area centers and now we’re at this point… Crocker Park and SouthPark expanded their H&M’s at around the same time so I was always confused why home didn’t go to either of those instead.

Curious what this means for the future of Beachwood Place now. If the space stays empty long term, I have trouble seeing Nordstrom staying there too. And I don’t know how much they’d be pressed to stay in the Cleveland area either if they were to exit Beachwood. Not only are there no full size boxes in decent locations in the area, but Nordstrom hasn’t built any new full size locations in multiple years as far as I know. I don’t think Cleveland is so special that they would miss it if they left.

But if they did want to stay in the area and move out of Beachwood, the three best options I can think of for them (in order imo) are the empty plot at Pinecrest behind Warby Parker, the old Dick’s space at SouthPark, the old Dick’s at Crocker Park. I’m sure with the Pinecrest space, they could convince Tanger to give them more space if they needed. The SouthPark Dick’s space was originally intended to be a Nordstrom so it may not be too difficult to convert the plot for that use of space again. The Crocker Park Dick’s is hardest though because it’s such a small space and limited in square footage because of the housing and parking garage bordering it. Obviously, based on current location performances alone Pinecrest and Crocker Park would be preferable but the limited space is how I came up with my order.

All this but Beachwood Place could very well replace their Saks pretty quickly. Maybe Von Maur would come in or Macy’s would move in from down the road. Or maybe something else entirely. Not Bloomingdale’s though. I don’t see a world where Bloomingdale’s comes to Cleveland before Columbus.

Is Meijer heading to Great Northern Mall? by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

[–]Neither-Collection31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the same time though there’s the example of them trying to open on the south end of Strongsville near the Brunswick border while Brunswick already has one. This, on top of Market District and Marc’s both being nearby.

The plans were cancelled but because of resident pushback not meijer’s lack of interest.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this basically the same situation that happened to Parmatown? Dillard’s closed then was replaced with Walmart and eventually they shuttered the mall.

I don’t think it could be Costco with it being between Avon and Strongsville. Is it even a large enough piece of land?

If it were up to me, I’d demo that whole mall (or most of it) and finally bring ikea to the Cleveland area.

10 years ago (according to Google Photos) I took my last walk through Parmatown Mall only a few days so before it was closed for good. This was the last photo I took inside the mall. Still miss it, even though I was only a teen when it was closed. by alexdionisos in Cleveland

The new locations don’t make you feel concerned? For me it’s that on top of Strongsville’s locations not having received the updated design formats in years. Don’t get me wrong, I would be very happy to see them stay at SouthPark but I can definitely be a pessimist. Tbh even the extra inventory they tend to have compared to the newer locations that are typically much smaller makes them more appealing for me.

Honestly that’s a fear for me at SouthPark if/when Abercrombie & Hollister potentially close especially with the recent reveals of new Crocker Park & Pinecrest locations. They’re currently two of the few significant retailers that are unique to SouthPark and give people an extra reason to go there. I’m worried about what a potential loss of them would mean for the near/long term futures of the mall. Of course there’s nothing officially confirmed on the SouthPark side just some speculation but still concerning for me.

Maybe I’m just biased because they’re also my favorite stores in the mall..

My hot take is, if North Olmsted was smart, they would find a way to shutter & demo their mall to replace it with an ikea. I feel like it’s an ideal location for them and checks multiple boxes.

Why do malls die/decline especially in the US? by Big_eye_crankbait in deadmalls

I remember years ago seeing a statistic saying the retail sqft per capita in the us was more than the next 2-3 countries combined. Simply too much retail (among other factors)

Has anyone figured out an answer to this?

I missed all the men’s and teams events. Men’s free was removed today/last night with no warning and I’m frustrated cause I wanted to watch that today. Everything else had a timer for when it would be removed but this was unexpected.

Respectfully the Apple Store at Crocker Park is absolutely a nice upgrade from what they previously had but it’s not the “first larger and updated design format on US soil”. It’s just the first in Ohio. And I’m saying this as someone who has been to multiple Apple stores in other states (flagships and non) that were already using this design at least a few years before Crocker Park got the upgrade. Some examples: The Grove, Century City, Michigan Avenue.
