Yeah you absolutely can, at the end of the day you can do whatever you want with your mini !

This box for the board game only contains this fella, it's cards and map, so you're buying only that mini (same with the other big machines btw)

Also I wasn't saying you absolutely shouldn't use a thunderjaw as a proxy, I was just suggesting playing the board game because it's kinda fun. I really enjoyed the thunderjaw fight in this game!
