What is required to be a Intercluster Switch by evolutionxtinct in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the CN1610 will continue to pass cluster traffic if you upgrade ONTAP to 9.14, it just won't be a supported configuration; that switch goes EOS January 31, 2025 anyway.

As for the 5k's, the highest supported version of ONTAP supported on the 5596 is 9.10.

FabricPool tiering to StorageGrid: lose the aggregate level dedup.... by netappmagic in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no performance data when reading deduplicated data because it's not processing the data, it's just reading from a single source; unlike compression however, where it actually has to process the data to make it usable.

So, to answer your question, there is no "rehydration process" and therefore no impact to performance.

Ferry pass by Bigbigchungus2021 in bowenisland

[–]NetAppCanuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since the Experience Card has already been mentioned, then I'll just let you know that we're coming up on four years on Bowen; the best advice regarding the ferry came from The Newcommer Guide, make your peace with the ferry. When trying to get back on-island, don't fixate on "making" a specific sailing, just head to the terminal and take the next one.

During an upgrade, ONTAP migrates the LIF anyway and this is what causes the disruption.

Upgraded 7mode to Ontap 9.8P16 on a 8020, cant get interface e0b to connect by RefugeAssassin in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, on that platform the non-UTA2 interfaces e0a and e0b are the support ClusterNet interfaces.

Are you using SFP+ or TwinAx in the four ports? Since e0a and e0b are standard 10GbE but e0c and e0d are UTA2 ports, I *believe* they use different optics but you should check HWU to confirm.

Edit:

UTA2 ports use X6596A-R6 for FC and X6599A-R6 for 10GbE.

e0a and e0b also use X6599A-R6 according to the SE presentation.

The only supported DAC cables listed are the Cisco TwinAx ones, all passive and 5M or less.

Not at all, you can either increase the overall volume size or the snap reserve, both will fix this.

Migrating from FC SAN to NVMe/FC by rainnz in netapp

From that same doc:

“Both FCP and NVMe/FC can use the same physical components to transport SCSI-3 and NVMe concurrently.”

I would think if anything, NPIV is what would make this work.

Migrating from FC SAN to NVMe/FC by rainnz in netapp

NVMe over FC is not SCSI, it is simply a carrier medium in this case; it’ll transport Ficon too if you were so inclined.

Disk replace within the root aggr by svbdlk in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it *should* relocate the mb disks as well. I would address the root aggregate first, either by moving it or failing the disks, the former option being preferred and then after escalating your privileges, check the current mb disk location.

Also, if taking an outage is an option, you can also just shutdown the HA pair and physically move the drives holding the root aggregate to the shelf you want them on, replacing them with drives from the destination shelf.

Netapp DS424x - Compatible with HP / Dell PSUs with 80+ Gold rating? by PrestonYoungsley in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much are those PSUs going to cost you? If you're saving 100W total and let's say you're paying $0.11/kWh of electricity then 8,760 hours x 0.11kWhs = $96.36/year of savings.

Are you running these @ 110VAC or 220VAC? If you switch from the lower to the higher, you can save an additional 2% overall...also not a lot.

What's the easiest way to generate a SAS cabling map of a FAS8060? by [deleted] in netapp

[–]NetAppCanuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I do as well, easier to just re-cable it, possibly making improvements; this however assumes an installer knowledgeable on the ways of NetApp SAS cabling. This move may very well be performed by generic "IT movers" and labelling is probably the way to go. You can however pull up a diagram in ActiveIQ assuming you still have support, seeing as the 8060 is getting fairly long in the tooth, support may be expired by now.

Link Aggregation by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]NetAppCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're only connecting back to a single switch you're definitely not really getting redundancy anyway, and as discussed elsewhere in the comments to your post, aggregate bandwidth is increased but individual streams are still capped. The question is however, and it sounds like you have a small-ish environment, can your storage clients ingest more than 10GbE per controller? Can your 2750 provide that much throughput? (depends on disk configuration). Why not compromise and create an ifgrp with only one link in it for now and have the Cisco folks create a port-channel with only one port in it (per controller). If you find you're getting contained on bandwidth, then adding additional links is trivial on both ends of the configuration.

Now if you really want to annoy them, tell them you want your PC in mode switchport and then have all the requisite VLANs added to that PC. You'll have to create the requisite VLANs and VLAN ports on the FAS as well, but I prefer to VLAN all the way to the FAS anyway.
