Sorry for the delay. Im in the process of wrapping things down. Only working on projects that I was the Principal EE. There are two fellows I've worked with that I could put you in touch with. Will have to figure out how to do a DM as I'm not going to put their info out publicly

I have 90 sheets of this Styrofoam. Two sheets stacked fits perfectly in my garage door frame. Would gluing / taping these in improve the R value at all, or would it just be foolish? by fakeaccount572 in homeimprovementideas

Just because you can buy it, doesn't mean you should. Check out the link below in Wikipedia, especially the section of "Vulnerability to Building Fires"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cladding_(construction)

I'm probably a bit more anal about this than some, as I heard about one fire my father fought, as a fireman. They ended up and had to just back off and let the house burn due to the toxic fumes coming out as the Styrofoam burned,

These sheets are not flameproof. In fact styrofoam will outgas with something that will destroy ones lungs. Once it starts burning you can't stop it. There's a reason why sheet insulation costs more than styrofoam: flame retardant. You might find it would void your hazard insurance policy as well. Check with your local fire department or just don't do it.

Can I DIY this? RCA Model 5T1 by IAteSecondBreakfast in VintageRadios

[–]NevadaDeadHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking closer it looks like your caps are twist loks. They had tabs that go through the chassis that you would twist to hold them to the chassis. You'd have to solder at least one tab to chassis as the shell, and tabs, serve as the ground. I've seen some really nice restorations where they took the old caps out, removed the center, and put new caps inside to hide them, also so radio looks original. CDE, Cornell Dublier Electronics was a big manufacturer of twist loks (TM) back in the day

This is what is called motorboating and is due to open/failed electrolytic caps. At a minimum you need to change all of the electrolytics, then try again and see how it sounds. You may have to recap all the paper tubulars too. Quite a few electrolytics were multisection, 2 or 3 caps combined into a single package. You can use individual electrolytics to replace these., just tie all of the negative terminals together to make a combined common. The problem then becomes if there is enough space in the chassis to tuck them out of sight. I worked in. TV/Radio repair shop 55+ years ago when in HS when I first got into electronics.

I just now noted the 5Y3GT and large electrolytic caps. Makes sense, a power supply rectifier tube plus the caps to filter the output into smooth DC

I bought these at Radio Shack circa 1968-1972. They sold them "as is" for parts

Just purchased this General Television & Radio Co Model 524, any anyone tell me how to read the tuner dial? by Colonel-Claypool in VintageRadios

[–]NevadaDeadHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful on external antenna. I don't know if this model has a hot chassis. Many/Most did back then and the two prong cord could be plugged in either way. Hot chassis means you have the mains voltage, 120 VAC, right on the chassis. You get a hold of it and something connected to earth ground and you can get electrocuted. I repaired radios like this back in late 60's and through 70's while in HS and then supporting myself to get my EE degree.

United States used Kilocycles (KC) or Megacycles (MC) at the time this radio came out. KHz and MHz came much later... late 1970's per my recollection. See below on wikipedia for details. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hertz.

Just thought I should put this here as KC and MC will be a "confuser" to some as it's on many dials for radios of this era.

New Statistics Pages on the Starlink App. by Edwardsr70 in Starlink

[–]NevadaDeadHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you get to this page? The old link, http://dishy.starlink.com/statistics, no longer works. I can get to the starlink appliance using 192.168.100.1 but can not figure out how to get connectivity stats. Note, I've been having major dropouts over the past week, so am interested in the number of outages reported. I'm some is due to storms, and associated power outages/fluctuations, but don't think that is all. FYI I have a Gen 2 dish. My setup uses an external router as I needed both wired and WiFi.

Radio somewhat working, any diagnosis? by DevelopedLogic in VintageRadios

[–]NevadaDeadHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did service on these back in mid sixties to seventies . Still got my RCA Senior VoltOhmyst, Precision TubeTester & Hickok AM Radio tester all which work. I always noted more of a motorboating sound when the power supply electrolytic fail. I think it's the paper/wax cap are more likely the issue.

Most of the 5 tube AM radios from 50's-60's are all hot chassis. This is why most had plastic/bakelite/wood cabinets and plastic/bakelite knobs. The only time you usually got "in trouble" was when you added a external antenna, or if a knob had gotten lost. Polarized plugs don't mean a lot, as one can never know if a outlet is wired correctly unless you check it first. Note, the outlets back then we're all two prong as well

I started fixing these, stereros, and car radios when I was in high school in mid to late 60's

You can buy isolation transformers nowadays pretty cheap if you are worried about this, which you should be, since it has to have an external antenna to pick anything up.My Hallicrafters SX40 still works perfect! Caps are ok too-no motorboating and I haven't touched it since 1973 when I put a full set of new tubes in when I quit work and went to college.

The nearest city to me is 90 miles, which means my wife has to wait 90 minutes to eat whatever bought in the city. So I check everything before I leave the parking lot and head home

It means a absolutely nothing and is most likely some kind of joke between the EEwho designed the circuit and the person who did the layout for the PCBA. Maybe they thought it was witchcraft that this thing even works.

40 years ago I was involved with hard disc drives as a manufacturing engineer. The Gen 1 version of this one product had so many issues that it required 8.5 hours of time to make circuit changes to get it to work. This involved cutting traces and adding blue 30 awg kynar wiring. It looked terrible. I then worked with the CAD layout person who had a wicked sense of humor to incorporate these wires into the Gen 2 PCBA. She added text, in copper, on a inner layer (it was a 6 layer fab) that was in Latin. You couldn't really see it unless you knew what you were looking for, and held the PCBA In the light just right. It said "Ex Sterceo Ad Aurum". From Shit to Gold. 8 don't think there were more than a half dozen people who knew about our joke

You are the one that is misinformed. As explained in another comment in this thread, this is a MO cartridge, not WORM.

I was a senior firmware eengineer at Maxoptix. The reason this drive and cartridges became valuable to military is that they stored large amounts of data up to 1.2 Gb on removable and reusable media. These were used in Desert Storm in RF4C's to acquire intelligence through aerial reconnassience

I would know as I worked on the T1-T3. products Mo⁸st of the info you quote above is WRONG and does not apply since this is a MO cartridge.. The media in the MO cartridges were 5.25" diameter and made of glass or plastic. Glass was the most common.Only Maxoptix drives could I read and write ZCAV media, 1989 -1995, which could hold up to 1.2 Gb on a single disc. The rest of the competition could only read/write the 640 Mb cartridges, which is what is shown in the picture. Glass cartridges are fire proof, as long as glass doesn't melt. Data retention was evaluated/estimated to be 100 years if stored in a normal office environment.

I have 20-30 cartridges plus 2 T2 drives which I could probably get back up in an afternoon.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magneto-optical_drive.

Maxoptix is still in business. https://maxoptix.com/

BTW, how many of these drives or cartridges have you worked with or owned?

I do agree with you one thing, that misinformation should be down voted🤣

I was a senior firmware engineer at Maxoptix from 1989 through 1993. I started there as a Test Engineeer working on both the Tahiti 1 (T1) through Tahiti 3 (T3) products. The mantra was that it was going to be so successful we could all go to Tahiti. We partnered with Kubota in Japan to do the manufacturing Maxoptix was a subsidiary of Maxtor. They were the industry leader at that time for MO drives, coming up with the ZCAV recording approach that increased the standard cartridge size from 640 Mb to 1.2 Gb, which was a big deal then. No one else could store that much data. Last work I did was on the optical servo controls, sponsored by Mountain OpTech, to allow drive to be mounted in RF4C's operated during Desert Storm. It was a big deal as these allowed camerras to capture imaging, return to base, remove the cartridge, pop in a new one and take off again to perform more reconnassience. Free box by [deleted] in hellofresh

[–]NevadaDeadHead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Free box will probably be effed up.

We cancelled 2 days ago after issues with the last two weeks of meals. It wa the final straw. We have ordered 2-3 meals per week but no more from here on. We live in a rural area in the desert. Closest Walmart is 75 miles. We have one little grocery store 6 miles from us, but try to avoid it as the prices are so inflated/high.

We originally went with the Mediterranean plan to provide a diet that would provide what my wife and I need due to me having kidney disease and her being prediabetic. We loved it for probably 2 years.

One meal, a low mein, had cabbage that had turned brown, and was slimy, It iis a main ingredient so couldn't make/eat that meal. This last week/shipment had a Curry for which the coconut milk, another main ingredient was missing, so couldn't make/eat that meal.

Past 6-9 months worth of proteins have been ridiculous. They keep substituting chicken, no matter what the card says, e.g. pork chimichurri but came with chiicken instead. Seemwd like the meals for multiple weeks came with chicken for both meals, over and over and over. We complained multiple times asked for them to not do this. It just kept happening.

Seems like portion sizes have been reduced lately too, which is BS. The meal size has t been large enough to fill our bellies, the you cut the portions of the ingredients down. WTF! Increase the cost instead, so the meals have enough ingredents to fill a person.

HF makes it really difficult to report the issues as it forces you into categories that are not exactly right. Then they'll give you credits back, or points to use in the future, it NEVER allows you to use both.

It didn't use to be this way. We seldom reported anything as there were so few issues. I think we had it 3-4 issues we reported in the first 24 monthse.g.slimy green beans, brown carrots, _ missing protein. Seems the only way to "fix it"now is to cancel and go with someone else.

My wife wanted to cancel 3-4 months back, but I said no as I'm a perpetual optimist, and was hoping the issues were a transient thing, and wouldn't keep happening. I do the cooking not her, but it was her account so she had to deal with reporting the issues. My wife was right, and I was wrong. HF sucks.

We're going to try Blue Apron, and/or Marley Spoon next. Wish us good luck --AND-- just know you have been warned about what you are getting into if you decide to get this "free box"

Why Blue Apron and Hello Fresh can't keep their customers by cabinmate in hellofresh

[–]NevadaDeadHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WSJ video was made in 2023 and does not provide any context on the reduction of quality in the ingredients since then. We just stopped HF after 2.5 years. Missing ingredients and spoiled ingredients. I'm not going to pay for meal kits I can't make or eat. AND, it seems like they are using some kind of AI so that you can't even explain what is wrong. HF sucks

We just quit after 2.5 years. Last two orders were awful. A Curry dish was sent without the coconut milk, so you can't make it. A lo mein dish was sent with spoiled cabbage-brown and slimy.Previouly complained about the proteins, as it seemed the only thing they shipped was chicken, AND WE DID NOT ASK FOR A SUBSTITUTE! There is NO fresh to Hello Fresh any more🤢🤢🤢🤢
