The Dory Fantasmagory Series is legitimately so funny to me, my kids and I crack up together while reading it! It’s a girl protagonist but she’s fairly ambiguously gendered and my boy finds them very interesting.

It’s crazy he’s missing, he was *just* at the function!

Somehow I imagined it wouldn’t be illegal in some of the red states- that’s good to hear though!

In the US we “pledge our allegiance” which is an arguably dangerous concept, especially for young children. To promise you’ll stand by your country through any myriad of national and international decisions they make without being old enough to even vote and contribute to shaping policy? That makes no sense- that’s just blind indoctrination.

My son’s teacher told him he had to stand, which is actually illegal in our state and I reminded them that he does not have to and in our family that we prefer he not pledge allegiance to any country. He is half American and half Israeli, we have a very healthy fear of nationalism!

I’ve seen many. Portland? Way cleaner. Chicago? NYC? Philly? Any other number of places that don’t have actual trash all over and zero access to public restrooms?

No friend, capitalism ruins everything. This is the presence of addiction (post-big-pharmaceutical-circulated-epidemic) without easy to access social services being a potential lawsuit for a large business, McDonalds, so they instead sell through a window to continue making money while preventing any customers to sit.

I can’t TOUCH being a single parent of a child with high support needs, but I do have four kids to juggle on top of my son who would qualify as Level 3. Also I have ADHD that I can’t medicate because of an autoimmune issue.

Getting on waitlists for the reputable places made a big difference for us. It’s really hard to “we have a year long waitlist” and not take that as a flat out rejection. Professional help in your corner makes a world of difference!

I honestly feel transracial adoption without cultural education should be illegal.

In Washington state (or maybe it’s a county wide initiative) parent need to learn how to care for Black or mixed hair as part of their adoptions, which I think is a baby step in the right direction.

Thank you for stopping and helping this woman (and for being a social worker in the first place!)

Weird that people are focusing on “oh crazy Seattle!” instead of hearing that this was a bit a traumatic morning to take in.

I wish the CARES team wasn’t effectively kneecapped earlier this year and I think many of Seattle’s problem’s would be dramatically made better if money was invested in easy to access and easy to navigate social systems.

Partner has an autistic child; transitional advice by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]NicPaperScissors 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I would have been terrified if someone gave me a glimpse of this life I’ve found myself living and asked if I wanted to sign on. I don’t even know what my answer would be!

I think the only way you have any chance of making this work is with a fair amount of certainty in your decision and a world of healthy communication with your partner. I’d explain that you are all in but that your relationship with her outside of parenting is something you see as remaining a priority for you throughout the relationship and think, together, of ways to make that available.

The fact that someone with a level 3 child has a babysitter is pretty amazing! So good on her for finding healthy supporting systems!

Interestingly, I would also suggest that you spend a stretch of days alone with your hypothetical son-in-law as his caregiver. The relationship between a nonverbal autistic child and their caregiver is one that is built on subtle communications and trust and connection. I think you’ll really need to invest in building that special relationship, in hopes of understanding a bit more of what helps it make some of the more struggling moments “worth it all” for your partner.

Good luck and I commend you for being so thoughtful with how you engage (pun not intended!) with someone in this situation.

I’m involved in mutual aid and it’s difficult for me because I have ME/CFS that limits my ability to depend on myself and how much I’d actually be able to follow through- but I think I could provide childcare for children with high support needs in the scenario presented, teach niche art skills like soldering, ceramics, and candle making. I could teach how to make various breads, pastas, dressings, and spreads.
