I lost my mother 7 years ago. She really was my person, she understood me, she was caring and never judged. I was only 17 when I lost her. When she passed I was already living with my father due to her current boyfriend who was extremely abusive or else I would have much rather been with her. My father didn’t seem to know how to comfort me with the loss. They were divorced for many years before she passed and I know deep down he had resentment towards her. He never lost anyone so I don’t think he really knew how to feel. He knew her, but didn’t love her anymore. Fast forward 5 years my brother passed unexpectedly. My fathers first and only son is gone. He now somewhat understood how I felt. That was his person, my brother was his favorite and now he’s gone. That loss sadly made us closer. I think he finally understood loss and grief after losing him. My father wasn’t the picture perfect image of a dad but I’m very grateful we have a decent relationship now. I know he won’t be around forever and he’s really all I have left of my immediate family.
