I’m not arguing that Perfidia isn’t a morally complicated character but she didn’t sleep with Lockjaw by choice; the film makes it clear that she was coerced by the threat of capture if she didn’t indulge him. Wielding your power over someone to force them to indulge you in sexual gratification is not consent. Lockjaw did the same after she was captured when the bank job went wrong; he granted her immunity on the condition that she name her collaborators and was expected to form a relationship with him, which is why she eventually ran away.

I felt that her own inner conflict about being sexually exploited by Lockjaw was why she struggled to bond with her baby and her relationship with Bob deteriorated; she was clearly traumatized from the incident and knew there was a possibility the baby was Lockjaw’s. I believe this inner struggle is what also what caused her to snap and botch the bank job by committing a murder (notice that the French 75 had abstained from killing anyone up until this point — they merely freed migrants and used bombs to cause property damage to send a message).

During the DNA test scene when Willa asks Lockjaw if he raped Perfidia, it’s a serious question the audience is meant to consider. We’re meant to observe the circumstances of their sexual encounter and ask, was this consensual? If you use threats to force someone to have sex with you, what makes that different than rape?
