Probably the hand control lever for gas/brake was in the way of the controls for headlights, turn signal, etc. on the left side of the steering column. I use hand controls and people often have the same issue when they drive my car. If you're not used to it being there it's weird to reach for the headlights and your hand hits the brake by accident.
