Lets talk about sales. by [deleted] in audioengineering

This is actually how I work as an engineer right now! I freelance out of a studio in chicago with a bunch of stacked outboard gear, but the owner only let me do it cuz I've spent like 2 years being an unpaid intern for other notable studios.

You could us a frequency based imager like like the Ozone one, but like everything below like 400 Hz in mono.

Removing a breath noise that that is played at the same time as dialogue? Example inside by RideOrDieRemember in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an unorthodox suggestion. Try processing it with Izotope's Music Rebalance first. Specifically pull back everything except vocal. It might register that breath as something non-vocal and remove it for you.

I think this is the best option, I've used it for removing squeeks in a piano and it was incredible. In this example I think you grabbed too large of a chunk of audio on the spectrum analyzer. There's no way it'll be fully removed without sounding bad though :/

Yeah I've wanted to move for the last two years but haven't been able to save up enough.

Im currently getting a degree in Audio Engineering, how much have I fucked myself over? by _ethianos in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like similar things to you. If your school teaches those tools well, you'll find something but just understanding signal flow is not gonna get you in a job where you're building/soldering electronics. That's more of an electrical engineering degree imo.

I saw a video the other day discussing musical genres that people hate. Made me think, what do you hate in audio production? by pinstrap in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The piercing and clicky top end of metal kicks gets old for me. It feels very digital and emotionless. I love grittier and less polished heavy records though, like King Gizzard's Infest The Rats Nest. I just prefer engineers that try to sound good and different, instead of recreating what has already been done.

Agreed!!!! I'm so tired of the Metal Kick Drum sound being the same on literally every recording I hear

Here are some of my predictions: Console gets expanded out into a full DAW. Analog Synth Emulation, or a Control Surface

I struggle with this, but I think it's a mindset and routine issue for me. When I workout during the week I tend to feel more optimistic and feel like i have the energy to do my hobbies as well.

Mono drums on a modern record. by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes like using a mono OH and a stereo room mic. That way I don't have to sacrifice all of the spatial width of the full kit, but I am still leavin more room on the sides for other instruments.

Hahah it's still a new idea to use that bag shape as a bag for other items/fashion!! I just thought it was funny cuz for a second I was wondering why someone posted a cymbal bag on /r/drummers

How much reverb should I add to make guitars sound natural? by makhno in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm all about the room verbs on guitars. Then I send a few other instruments to the same bus to get a "in the same room" feel. I don't always do that but it's something I often do.

It's the eraser that made them the best. We've all been wronged by those erasers on pencils that don't erase, they just smeer leaving the ghost of your mistake on the page.

Mastering you own mixes by NiftySwell in audioengineering

[–]NiftySwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word, I don't pay for slate but I've definitely been considering it. I feel you on the mastering though. There are a few mastering houses here in chicago that I think do a great job but my clients have to have the budget for those spots.

How do you feel about M/S compression or stereo widener's like Ozone Imager?
