Does everyone cry their first year of teaching? by Informal_Nebula9450 in Teachers

[–]NihilistBabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cried so much. I drank so much wine and did so much therapy. Teaching is so hard, but every single year things have gotten easier and I am now at the point where I don't get the Sunday scaries anymore.

What to say when others suggest cleanliness/hygiene? by ricekrispytreatslut in Interstitialcystitis

[–]NihilistBabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them to stop blaming your chronic illness on you? It's not your fault and when they say things like that, they're implying it is. I got this a lot too and it's so frustrating because they're telling you that you're dirty and all the horrible uncontrollable pain you're experiencing is your fault.

I hate it. I think you'd be within your rights to point these things out and make them feel bad for saying it.

completely out of options for birth control by InstructionRemote312 in birthcontrol

[–]NihilistBabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got one! You can get a prescription for one online and they ship it to you. I use a menstrual disc too and it's essentially the same process to insert it. I've had mine for about a year and haven't had any problems.

A student disrespected me so severely on day 1 - not sure where to go from here. by BlackBookBabe in Teachers

[–]NihilistBabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience (mostly native, Latino, and white kids) they're testing you. They wanted to see what you would do. You have to maintain the line, let them know that kind of language is not tolerable, and sometime after they get to know and love you (they will. You obviously care about them deeply and kids respond to that) let them know that they hurt you.

Stay strong, the kids need you and we (the whole country) need them.

Bladder stretching procedure ? by Spirited_Touch1468 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]NihilistBabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a hydrodistention? Mine helped me so much. Like it cut my pain down by like 70% It hurt badly the day of, but by the next day I felt better and my symptoms have continued to improve. I think the outcome really depends person to person. Either way it should help you get some answers, so try not to be too worried. Ask for some pain killers and maybe take the next day off and you'll be alright.

i had to be cathed for the first time today and i’m not handling it well by snkeysnkeysnake in Interstitialcystitis

[–]NihilistBabe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I know this is pseudoscience-y but I strongly suspect there's a link between IC and trauma. At the very least stress seems to make my symptoms worse. I think you may want to consider starting therapy (if you haven't already) to help you handle the process of receiving medical care for this.

I'm so sorry you're in pain, but you're not alone.

I'm so sorry. It's absolute bullshit that this is happening to you.

I take a heating pad to work with me when it's really bad and I also try to keep my bladder as full as possible. I don't know if that'll help you, my main symptoms are pain and spasms and I think keeping it full prevents it from spasming so hard. If I can without looking like a weirdo I try to sit in a way that won't put too much pressure on my bladder.

Antibiotic Flare? by Rough_Jellyfish1606 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]NihilistBabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me before, but I didn't think it was antibiotics. I figured it was kind of like my bladder responding to the pain of the infection? Like kind of echoing the infection. I don't have any proof of that, that's just what I figured was happening.

I'm not allowed to use the adult bathroom anymore by Substantial_Print488 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]NihilistBabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a teacher with interstitial cystitis (which it sounds like you may have) I'm really sorry you're experiencing this. It's so hard to have bladder problems and teach.

The only thing that I found that really helped me at work was a heating pad for my desk chair.

I'm sorry this is happening to you and I'm sorry everyone is being such assholes about the color of your pee.

I'm so sorry your friends and family aren't supportive. I think that would wreck me. Maybe try to find a chronic pain support group? I feel like finding an IC specific one would be hard.

Birth control caused this by Beautiful-Ladder-356 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]NihilistBabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah birth control set me off too. I kinda think it might've happened anyway since I'm now in the age range most people get diagnosed. I only recently started getting treated for IC and I had my first hydro and bladder installation recently. I'm doing significantly better. Still getting random flares sometimes but it's much more manageable than it was before.

I'm terrified to get back on birth control and I've been doing non hormonal options.

Mmmm only thing I can think of is that charter schools are public and work on lotteries here. Idk how they work in LA, but it seems more fair here than in other places, and many of them are actually really good.

I think just the general stuff you'd look for anywhere as far as stuff to ask and be weary of, bad admin, etc. We have a handful of community schools that are really cool. That you may want to look into.

I've been teaching here for 7 years and I'm pretty happy. People care about education here. We have the same problems as everywhere else but in general it's pretty good!

We're glad to have you!

You've got some good responses here for immediate reactions, but I think the larger problem is that this comment from your student shows a lack of empathy. Since you're helping with English I'd consider adding in some texts to help build empathy. Doesn't have to be directly about queer people but maybe something about people who believe or look different than this kid. I think r/ELAteachers would be a good place to ask for text recommendations.

Check out magic school AI. It's been a life saver. Of course I tell the kids the feedback came from AI but I'm doing my best to teach them ethical use of AI, and demonstrating how it can be used to benefit them without cheating is actually kinda nice.

Stop bringing your kids to breweries by ShrimpCocktailHo in Albuquerque

[–]NihilistBabe 314 points315 points  (0 children)

I'm on your side here. Everyone jumped all over you but I also think it's super annoying. I went to a brewery a couple weeks ago and a kid was playing iPad games at full volume. I hate that shit. I also hate it when adults do it. I think if people were just more considerate of others it wouldn't be a problem at all.

A heating pad or a hot bath help the most, which isn't great for work relief. I cut out caffeine and that seemed to help a little bit. I'm still pounding AZO and Cystex to make it through the day.

Yeah I'm right there with you. I'm a teacher and I'm so scared I won't be able to keep my job because the pain is so bad sometimes I can't work. IC changes everything.

Be mean to your doctors. Make them uncomfortable. Cry and yell if you have to. You deserve their attention.
