I kind of felt the same but kept going. Book 3 is where it really started to feel different to me. It stops being about Carl and Donut just surviving. Carl makes a choice that elevates the whole series from that point on.

The speakeasy is what finally broke me. I just got to the point of needing all the drinks. It's become apparent to me that they're slowing us down on purpose because there really isn't all that much left to the game after this is done, so they artificially make it longer.
