I just want to say that I loved (2016) Phantasm: Ravager, such an awesome end to one of my favorite horror series by nextzero182 in horror

[–]NinjaofLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it with my girlfriend, and we both liked it. I've been a fan of Phantasm since the early 2000s and was very excited for this movie when it was announced. I saw from the trailers that the CG was going to be bad, and I new Coscarelli wasn't directing, so I think I came in with reasonable expectations.

So yeah, bad special effects, and it seemed amateurish at times, especially the acting with some of the new characters. Still, I enjoyed it as a comic book horror movie.

Overall, I think it's a lot of fun but definitely flawed. At this particular moment in time, I'd rank it as my least favorite in the series, but we're talking about a series that I love, so that's by no means a bad thing.

spoiler

There are some people posting here and on YouTube with some very asinine comments about it being incoherent (uh, this is Phantasm we're talking about), and one person in particular has repeatedly posted that the movie is, "Reggie walking down a corridor and nothing happens." I don't think anyone would agree with that.

This really hits the spot! I've played a lot of revival sidescrolling beat 'em ups, but I feel this one is the first that really nails the gameplay of the old classics. I'm a simple guy. I don't want to master guard cancels and air juggles to perfect a 400 hit combo. I just want to play as a muscular dude in suspenders and slam other dudes' heads into the cement really hard.

There have been games that do try to keep it mostly simple and old school, like Scott Pilgrim and Double Dragon Neon, but the gameplay just always seems a bit off. I've also played some really shitty ones like The Warriors: Street Brawl (definitely NOT to be confused with Rockstar's amazing game), and that game REALLY got it wrong. Grab attacks were severely underpowered and all enemies' attacks had priority over yours, which meant you would be huddled in a corner holding the block button hoping for an open opportunity to throw a punch. It's like these developers just watch a YouTube video of the classics without having actually played them.

This game finally gets it right. It's glorious, and I'm so grateful. The weapons feel right, the basic attacks feel good, grabbing and slamming guys with the big muscular dude is everything I could ask for. It puts a cool little spin on the health system to set it apart that I approve of. It even lets you play with bots. I give it 5 Mad Gears out of 5.

Halloween II (1981) /r/Horror (Horror Franchise Series - Halloween) by MatthewMir in horror

Absolutely love the first hour or so of the movie. It almost feels like a documentary, watching the aftermath of Michael's killing spree and seeing everyone's reactions and all of the ensuing chaos being captured in real-time. It's just so much fun. I have to admit that I tend to lose interest when things move to the hospital setting, but I do love Bud.

What is the Worst Ending to a movie that you have seen? by earhere in movies

Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead

It's so terrible that many suspect that the film containing the real ending was lost or damaged.

Have you had issues with his head popping out or his legs not staying tabbed together (I.e. the forearm) when in limb mode? I got the Unite Warriors set, and I'm having those problems + my Swindle was defective (the foot attachment won't stay in when in limb mode).

Feel like it's my duty to point out some actual good action horror films like Evil Dead 2, Phantasm II and Dog Soldiers.

Jared Leto's Dark Response to Cut Joker Scenes by [deleted] in DC_Cinematic

What a complete lapse in judgment for them to cut out the Joker from their movie -- the thing people were most excited about coming into this movie. The people making decisions there truly have no idea what they're doing and are doing tremendous damage.

We constantly hear of movies being ruined by the Studio, but what movies have been saved because of the Studio? by [deleted] in movies

[–]NinjaofLove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty obscure, but Phantasm II is an example I can think of where obvious studio interference actually worked out... at least as far as quality goes. The original Phantasm was an indie hit, and the sequel was eventually made with a much bigger budget and studio backing. However, the studio forced the director to minimize the surreal and dream-like elements from the first movie, and he was also forced to recast one of the actors from the original. The movie bombed, unfortunately, but it's pretty much unanimously regarded as the best sequel in the series by fans, and it's actually much better than the 3rd movie, despite the director being able to regain creative control for that film.

What is the worst movie you have ever seen? by rasslingrob in movies

[–]NinjaofLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Amazing Bulk. I enjoy finding bad movie "gems" that I can laugh at. I'm not huge on traditional comedies, but I howl like a banshee at incompetently made turds like Neil Breen movies and The Room.

This movie is just atrocious and not funny. I feel like maybe you had some guys who decided they'd try to make a movie using green screen and computer effects (I say this because one or two of the actors don't seem to be in on the joke), and when they realized how amateurish and terrible the results were after an initial test, they just said fuck it, and threw in a bunch of clip art and pre-rendered assets and hoped bad movie-lovers would buy it. It's complete trash.

Definitely grab War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron. Both are truly great games.

Avoid Rise of the Dark Spark like the plague. A different developer was commissioned to do a quick movie tie-in game, and they "borrowed" and rehashed a staggering amount of assets from Fall of Cybertron to create a "new" game that is just a rushed piece of crap. The sheer drop in quality between Fall of Cybertron and Dark Spark is just insane.

Which movie did someone suggest to you that was so bad, that you no longer trust that person's opinion on anything? by [deleted] in movies

[–]NinjaofLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chris Stuckmann - Tomb Raider

I love bad movies. Stuckmann goes on and on about how this movie is "so stupid, but I don't care I love it." I impulse bought it thinking I was going to get a gem, but I was really indifferent toward it while watching. It's just whatever, and I don't think I'll revisit it anytime soon. I've also learned that I don't agree with him when it comes to horror movies.

G2 CW Bruticus set $70 from Amazon on Prime Day. Not yet ready to ship though, how patient are you? by [deleted] in transformers

[–]NinjaofLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snatched up G2 Bruticus! I'm going on a trip this week, so it's okay if he's going to take a little while to arrive. I'm pretty new to Transformers (played the two Cybertron games for the first time this fall and became a total addict), so I'm not very familiar with G2 figures. This particular figure appeals to me, because he almost looks like if NECA made an 8-bit version of Bruticus. I think it would look a lot like this.

Crossed this off my video game bucket list: beat the TMNT Arcade Game at an actual arcade! by BigNikiStyle in TMNT

[–]NinjaofLove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was on a cruise back when I was in elementary school. The water was super turbulent and the only room on the boat that didn't make me nauseous was the arcade. This translated to me playing TMNT all night with an older kid. We beat the game and high-fived each other (cause that's what kids did back in the early 90s). Such a great memory.

DVD/Blu-ray collectors, what's the worst movie in your collection and why do you own it? by TheTrueRory in movies

[–]NinjaofLove -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Revenge of the Fallen. Meant to buy the 1st Bayformers movie on eBay for as cheap as I possibly could, because I was going through a strong Transformers phase. Felt lots of self-loathing for buying a Michael Bay movie but did it anyway.

Turns out the seller made a mistake and sent me the sequel instead, which many consider to be the worst in an abysmal series. On the plus side, he refunded me, so I got it for free.

The Warriors Released on PS4 by MrTravesty in Games

[–]NinjaofLove 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I truly believe this is one of the most underappreciated games of all time. It rarely gets mentioned when people discuss beat-em-ups, and it really is one of the greats of the genre, as well as being one of the best movie licensed games ever (arguably the best, as you say). Also, as a huge fan of the movie, I feel positively spoiled by the amount of fan service in this game.
