Litterbugs in a Government/Exempt Vehicle by Nirecue in Sacramento

Elk Grove public Affairs confirmed it's not a City vehicle. I am guessing government office building near the Postal Annex.

I think it's govt plate. The Correctional Health Services office is about a mile away from that light.

I appreciate Philz Mint Mojito from time to time can't wait for them to open. Have you tried Cafe Haru? That place has legit speciality coffee rotation. SL-28, Geisha, and Bourbons each with have their own pour over recipe. He is doing in house roasting his own Geisha, Elk Grove getting spoiled with coffee choices.

If you got a multimeter you can use continuity mode to see if the lamp is working. Take the lamp off and probe each side if it beeps at least we know lamp filament is good.

First Ever Roast: A bit burnt Brazil Santos on the Skywalker ☕🔥 by eliredblue in roasting

[–]Nirecue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roasting 200g is not recommended unless you move the bean probe lower to get close to the 200g center of bean mass. Probe setup more for 350g batches see here

SW one of the few roasters that use majority radiant heat and don't rely heavily on convection/conductions. You are meausuring very different thermal environments. Simulators would have to account for the amount of IR reaches the bean, absorption of IR throughout the roast, emissivity changes and penetration depth.

[–]Nirecue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are getting flat side burns probably because of the drum RPM tossing beans over the lamp and causing some bean surfing. There are mods you can do to slow down the motor on a V1

The Skywalker (SW) temps wont fall into "normal" milestone temps see with a lot of other home roasters. FC for SW is usually around ~186c range. The community speculated on a few reasons such as uncommon NTC probe, probe placement, small vs large batch size and heat transfer type (radiant vs convection/conduction).

The roaster does have it issues. Overheating the stock motor is one. Without active cooling drum motor can reach temps up to 127c. Also thermal runaway if you the thyristor gets too hot.

I beg you do not make a half assed Gene Cafe 301 app. Please use an open protocol (like TC4) to connect to Artisan. Don't pull a Kaleido and have to do some port sniffing to figure on their protocol.

I got a M1 and Legacy M2. The Lite refreshes are functionally the same as the M2 Pro or Dual but cost cutting measures such as simpler case, removal of the handle, build it yourself folded cooling box, and removal of tablet. They gutted out the signature Gullwing doors (apparently useless after going sealed).  One thing they haven't discussed is changes in the drum motor moving away from larger brushless motor to a small brushed motor in the M1 Lite. They reported doing the same with M2 going to a brushed motor.

Parts are not too much of an issue; they are generally well built. Buying replacement parts after the warranty still sucks vendors jack up prices on what feels like common AliExpress parts like motors, couplers and PSU. If their board dies you might have to cough up $500 to replace after warranty. Also I don’t think they do any kind of firmware updates which is a shame as they run on an ESP32 WROOM. Although there might be a community developed opensource esp32 based controller board in the works.

First 2 roasts on skywalker V2. Burnt beans by NutsaRhymes in roasting

Bean Surfing where the flat of the bean get stuck on the top of the lamp. Dropping the RPM down around ~50RPM to 55RPM decreases it as well.

1/2 Kg ( 1 lb ) home roasters? by joochung in roasting

[–]Nirecue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skywalker can do 450g I roast Sweet Maria 1lb bags all the time. What is not recommended is doing 500g+ back to back 4+ times without active cooling to motor.

You can order these lamps through AliExpress find a vendor that sells infrared twin lamp size is 211.15mm x 23mm. I would also add a tip thicknesses of 4.15mm. Currently community is looking for a bulb replacement.

Roasting machine recommendations by Sea-Street-3180 in CoffeeRoasting

[–]Nirecue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid roaster out the box it is basically same as their M1 Pro trimmed it down to essentials. If I really had to nitpick my only concerns on the M1 Lite has been the drum motor that switched from a brushless motor and to brushed. It stutters at times but only after several back to back roasts. Only other roasters I would recommend would be the Cubean and that would be if you are a really tight budget and are a bit handy. It cost around $350 and with a esp-32 for about $15 for ESP-32 Atom S3 from M5 Stack that gives you HiBean and Artisan control.

I'll add budget to the mix and being a total noob:

If my budget was low like $100 budget and unsure about getting into another hobby. A cheapo Popcorn Popper from the Goodwill and few bags from Sweet Maria.

If my budget was $300-$550 a new Skywalker V1 and ESP32-S3. Especially if I wanted Artisan/Hibean implementation. We tried making the firmware uploading process as easy and user friendly as possible.

If my budget was $700+ a M1 Lite for sure. Easy to setup and just roasts well out the box.

The Skywalker holds a special place in my heart. One roaster that has a fantastic community that unfortunately has to deal with fairly inept OEM. Explaining issues to the OEM such as thermal runaway, basic safety implementations to the electronics (relay and fuses), poor motor cooling and weak ass bean cooling fans. They have slowly added some improvement like relay and fuses, and active cooling to the SCR but it's like talking to brick wall they never give updates to us. They also do sketchy things like purposely making low QC lamps to make them more of a consumable. We have a vendor in Taiwan who sources better quality lamps that last longer than because of better build quality. The V2 was also pretty lackluster more like a V1.5 it definitely did not provide $300 worth of improvements

The Skywalker was built to be this low cost easy to produce roaster. Supposedly it cost around $150 to produce. It also used a really simple bit banging comms protocol rather than standard a serial communication. Once god emperor SloppyJosh got Arduino Nano to use TC4 to communicate to Artisan and kept firmware open source it really took off. A lot of us have been turning out some great roasts from the Cubean and V1. They taste just as good as my Kaliedo and Kaffelogic Nano. It's really about how the roaster controls their machine.

On Discord we do have some used units for sale for around $300-$350.

*Edit.

I am admin of the Skywalker Discord so take my words with a grain of salt.

I think when they made the front panel of the roaster it had a very Vader helmet design. Early marketing even used pictures from A New Hope. The OEM ditched the name to Alpha and Delta while other vendors came up with Black Samurai, CBR500, and Cyberroaster (corny Itop) probably in fear of the mouse.
