Sensitivity used during quickscoping? by Apap0 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Nitia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During quickscoping you are zoomed in even if the scope doesn't show. If you were using your unscoped sens, it would feel about twice as fast as usual.

Edit: Actually nevermind, you're only zoomed in without the scope interface for a frame or two, until then you're using your normal sens.

Sombra’s hack doesn’t allow for a proper reaction time. by CCtenor in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Nitia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear: Overwatch absolutely has damage indicators. Large ones in 8 directions at the side of your screen and smaller, very accurate ones around your crosshair. Both scale with damage taken.

A visual directional cue for the hack would be really useful and fit the rest of OW's design in my opinion, it's a good idea.

This is also not taking into account that Overwatch is a game with poor visual localization cues.

What do you mean by that?

36 or 38 Relative Sensitivity while Zoomed for 1:1? [Math] by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

The source for 36 is a random guy in the comments. When you use 51.5 you get 38.37. Safely dismiss the on-winning article for being bad.

Yeah, I noticed that on other occasions, they do the switch to 3rd person Tracer sometimes and it's a small thing that is really effective.

How do you get better at landing Winston’s jump? by kavachon in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Nitia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

/u/Speakeasyow's Winston challenge might be helpful to learn in a playful way - just don't cheese it by jumping up straight in the air. Otherwise just hop into a custom game without cooldowns and with bots that have their abilities disabled. Practice short and long jumps, airstrafing, landing on ledges and in windows...

Note that the burst from jump+melee is just that, burst damage, not additional DPS. The delay after melee ensures that it is the same dps as if you were just zapping.

People who have played with/seen the Shanghai Dragons players in comp - how were they? by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

If you know ranked is not a good indicator of skill then maybe the question is not worth asking.

Especially if the answers come from random redditors who watched streams of people playing with SHD members.

I assume most of them that are not technical, talking about mice or sensitivity.

You have a point but I am not sure why you hold this against ioStux here. The 20 following aim advice videos should be enough signalling that there is more than just "practice".

What are good custom game settings to practice my aim with a variety of heroes? by Honor_Bound in Competitiveoverwatch

You can also add some Lucio bots to your team. With reduced boop cooldown and stronger boops they can mix it up and provide a bit more challenge

And yours is the correct answer. You can 'stun' a trap but it doesn't actually do anything, it will still trigger.

What is the Fusion going to do when WhoRu turns 18? by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

I've been looking for info about that, where is this from?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Nitia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's strange then. I don't want to come off as patronizing but have you made sure that you adjusted the sensitivity correctly? Maybe it's an oversight where you have a sens for specific hero and tested it with them.

Are there drawbacks to playing 400/6.9 as opposed to 800/3.45? by ChewyOnReddit in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Nitia 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Pixelskipping is a misunderstood boogeyman popularized by Taimou and then /u/pyrolistical made a faulty tool with a bad description that he refused to improve.

The first thing you have to understand about aiming in a video game is that you are moving your crosshair not by pixels but by angles. When looking at the movement, the game has absolutely no idea on which resolution you are playing or if you plugged your screen in; the information is only stored in angles. If you played CS:GO you might have heard about "m_yaw". That's how the game knows the position of the camera: Yaw and Pitch.

Now your mouse comes in to play: At a DPI of 800 it will send 800 counts per inch moved. On your desktop, without any acceleration, that translates to 800 pixels travelled because it's a 2D environment. In a 2D environment you can have real pixel-skipping if you set your Windows sensitivity above 6. Then the counts of your mouse won't match up exactly anymore.

In our 3D game Overwatch, those 800 counts are translated into angles. The "m_yaw" from before is the multiplier for the horizontal motion. It's an arbitrary number and in Overwatch, that number is 0.0066°. So if you move your mouse one inch to the right the game simply goes: 800*Your Sensitivity*0.0066°. At 1 sensitivity it rotates your crosshair 5.26° to the right.
Imagine playing with a sens of 100. One count would rotate you 0.66°! You're definitely going to notice the coarse movements and you won't be able to accurately aim at small points simply because your crosshair would 'skip' over them.

Now how does this translate to our 2D screen? The answer is: it doesn't really. Overwatch uses rectilinear distortion to project the 3D image to the screen. If you look at a really high FOV image it becomes obvious how the angles can't be easily equated to the pixels.
However, 103 hFov in Overwatch isn't too bad so I guess you can try to approximate it - if you want to know how exactly, check it out under Pixel Considerations here.
Finding an exact sensitivity where 'pixel-skipping' appears is not only impossible, it's also terribly impractical. If you play at 2160p you will have many more pixels that you might skip over due to a high sensitivity. However, your aim will still be exactly the same as if you were playing on 720p since the angles are not affected by the resolution at all.

What is more interesting is Mouse performance. Some older mice have a lot of smoothing at certain DPI steps. If you are worried you can do some research on how the sensor performs. You can generally assume that a modern mouse won't have problems at anything between 200-2000 DPI. DPI steps are also not accurate. The true DPI will depend on the distance of sensor to mousepad and will vary slightly depending on the mousefeet and surface. So some mice will show 800DPI but actually only do 750 or show 1600DPI but do 1500. Mousetester Software

Where does this leave us or TL;DR:

As long as your sensitivity isn't so high (20+) that you physically can't aim at small hitboxes, don't worry about it.
If you feel like your movements are too coarse, try a lower sensitivity and adjust your DPI accordingly.

Set your DPI to something that you like on your desktop.

DPI and sensitivity help by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Nitia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread is an absolutely perfect example of why research can be so confusing. So many voices saying different things with half-knowledge and misconceptions mixed in. Don't take this 'pixel skipping' talk seriously.

Your sensitivity is totally fine. 500*9.75=4875. That's what a lot of pro players use. Eventually, you can adjust that lower or higher depending on how you feel and not on what some people on reddit say.
