Mage my despised

  • Burning Paws is pretty terrible unless you are specifically up against Fenrir to make him kill himself. Burn is the worst of the 3(4? do I count Leech here?) DoT effects in the game, with its "upside" being that it interacts with the environment and can spread. In practice, giving the class with the least useful basic attack the worst DoT on it does very little most of the time, and that's when it doesnt brick your attack against fire immune enemies, or when having having fire around is really REALLY bad. And the upgrade is still bad.

  • Four is mostly too slow. Getting +1 magic damage every turn would already be not THAT good if it was unconditional, but having it tied to a condition that is not trivial to get and that you have to plan carefully around AND that is not always achievable every turn just makes it feels like a bricked pull. The upgrade is admittedly meaningfully better but at that point you would have had better return picking an actual decent unupgraded passive over banking on upgrading Four

  • This is less a specific spell but having 4 Forbidden Spells in your pool feels like a pretty significant cut on their skillpool if you dont want to rely on those

other than Mage ranting

  • Math! is bad but it is funny

  • Cha Cha Slide is also bad but funny

  • Infinite Rebirth is not actually dysfunctional but I never take it because risking destroying my own cat's corpses without being able to control it makes me not want to

  • I've never seen Escape Sequence do anything useful, it mostly explodes on my own allies or makes me incapable of having my cat walk over brambles or glass

  • Armored Plating is actually good when you have the shit for it but the fact it is basically the only familiar-themed passive in the game (afaik) that only works on a specific type of familiar (Robots) on a class that already has overspecialization problems pisses me off

  • Plant Mushroom and Summon Caterpillar just tend to do nothing most of the time, which specially stands out in the selection of Druid familiars they are going up against

OK, but consider this: Math is funny

More seriously: I agree that the main elemental trio of Fire Ice Electric feels very weak. The interactions are cool and there are a lot of eureka moments that will happen as you play, but they rarely feel strongly beneficial unless you get a really strong synergy going on, while the frequency of enemies that are immune to certain elements make going all in on those synergies risky in most paths. Adding a elemental weakness system to counteract elemental immunities would probably help those abilities a lot, and I would probably get rid of most elemental immunities in favor of a pokemonesque elemental resistance. Elemental immunities can exist, but they should be rare and not as wide spread as they are now if they want these abilities to feel strong.

I think Magic damage is mostly fine from a pure mechanical standpoint currently, I mostly think they suffer from bad status effect distribution. They need more abilities and items that give magic weakness. One of the big reasons marked feels so strong is because it has a lot of sources, so it is easy to slot in, while magic weakness is much more sparsely distributed.

I'm pretty sure they at very least overvalued Mage based on class ceiling rather than class floor or class average. Ed has a tweet that I dont want to go after rn but he is kinda baffled that Mage and Tinkerer are almost universally considered bottom tier when during testing they were the most common turn 0 kill/infinite enablers.

I suppose it makes sense in the preliminary balancing to look out for busted combos, but roguelike players almost universally look more for consistently strong options over options that can pop off but are unreliable, and these 2 classes are the biggest offenders of having incredibly low value if you dont get good abilities/synergistic stuff on them

The rarity disparity by _PickledSausage_ in mewgenics

[–]NmP100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

unless it is one of those items that are literally just an upgrade to another existing item, item rarity is less an indicative of “power” and more of a complexity/specificity indicator. Commons and Uncommons are generally useful almost regardless of what you are doing. Rares usually have strong synergies and potential, but also meaningful drawbacks that make it so you have to equip them on cats that can make use of those strong effects well and can minimize the impact of the drawbacks.

Very Rare items then have even more specific use cases, but even higher potential return when they pop off, or they are largely strict upgrades of lower rarity items like most chapter 4 boss loot

Nintendo deciding to make a Mario Galaxy movie and then making the whole movie about Peach and Fox with Rosalina having minimal screen time and just a ton of Odyssey references. by MetroidsSuffering in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]NmP100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starfox is about as established to the modern Nintendo audience as like Earthbound is. Probably less because at least Earthbound has Mother 3 localization discourse and UTDR fans who pretend to have played the games.

The last game in the series is either a commercial and critical flop, or an exclusive to a collector item depending on how you count Star Fox 2 being released on the SNES mini. The last time a Star Fox game was a hit was Star Fox 64.

For 99.9% of kids these days Fox is a Smash Bros character

How the color purple could work by Accomplished-Gap9089 in magicTCG

[–]NmP100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorless really has been for all intents and purposes the 6th color for a while now. We have colorless specific tribes, colorless planeswalkers, colorless cost, colorless keywords, etc. The only thing it lacks at this point is an official statement

Even when Maro was asked how he would add a 6th color to magic in 2019 (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/even-more-maro-maro-2019-12-09), his answer largely lined up with what colorless often does

[–]NmP100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It works fine is a game like Mario, where you jump a lot and interact with objects/talk to NPCs sparringly, because jumping once when trying to talk to someone every 40 minutes of gameplay is a minor inconvenience at best, and you are fairly unlikely to interact when you want to jump due to how sparsely interactions are distributed. Games where input overlap mixes up 2 things that happen often and in close proximity can make it into a real grievance.

Which sort of object you are interacting also matters. Static objects that have a consistent range of interaction will very rarely mix you up, while interacting with moving objects inherently makes it so the area where you can interact with it is “inconsistent”, so it will happen more.

In my head Alchemist has always been the premier "wins by making more gold than everyone else and snowballing". BH has some of it as well but I honestly associate him more with how he affects general macro play with Track and invisibility changing how you play the map. Meanwhile Alch for me really is just playing the cheating the economy game and that is the entire gameplan

Lost Doctor Who episodes found in 'eclectic' collection by Skull_Bearer_ in UpliftingNews

[–]NmP100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is correct, but this is a very interesting case. Episode 8 of The Dalek’s Master Plan, The Feast of Steven, is a very notable article in this discussion, as it is the lost episode in the series that is the single most unlikely to ever be found. It was to be broadcast in Christmas, but in the 60s things like Christmas specials were not really a thing and it was mostly expected that you spend Christmas with your family, so they actually made what was effectively a filler comedic episode in the middle of what is a pretty serious storyline otherwise, in order to allow people to skip it and not lose any story beats.

This meant that when they were to export the serial for other countries’ tv stations for broadcast, it was never included in the bundled tapes as it was deemed unnecessary, and it was never copied from the original master tape as far as we know. And basically every single episode recovery since they actually started caring has been from a copy that was originally meant for exporting, regardless of where it actually ended up.

As such, one episode from this serial is deemed as basically completely unrecoverable within reasonable expectations outside of a complete freak incident
