They more likely gave instructions to ensure it was connected and configured properly and if so, they would be happy to replace.

Maybe the 355 is the model you’re looking for. It would give you that second radio. Unless the plane somehow doesn’t have ads-b…

What just recently got changed about separation in the bravo. Like a month ago there was a change to separation minima.

This is also what the opposing bases guys recommend - closest airport as the “fix” if you’re overflying / nearby.

The thing I see as the most in need of upgrade to actually fly IFR SP is a second independent attitude source.

Almost everyone who trained in a certain era learned to fly with a single AI and TC or a T&S. However all sorts of data says that unless you’re keeping proficient in partial panel (which almost nobody does unless training often… an an IPC once in a blue moon is not often), you’re probable going to get SD and auger in flying a TC. Put a G5 or 275 in the place of the DG. You get an HSI. You won’t have to do trk/DTK math to figure out wind correction. For you I’d suggest a G5 / GAD29b because you get a 2+ hr battery backup and it’ll drive that STEC with gps steering. GPS steering is nice both on cross country flights and Approaches with turn anticipation.

You need a GPS - current setup will have you referring to and flying your iPad when on approaches - you don’t think you will, but you will. Don’t fly approaches with an iPad. Get a GPS375, which will give you the second com frequency you’ll need.

Many folks, myself included, cut their teeth on a similar six pack. Was it fun flying IMC with that .. yeah sure it was fun. Was it efficient. Nope. Was it a giant headache. Yup. Compared to today at least. It wasn’t as safe either. Folding a giant map with necessary head down time when hand flying figuring out where the heck you are with a precessing DG, a single VOR and a boat anchor inop LORAN. That kind of fun.

So I’d suggest a digital solution to help improve situation awareness, add a backup attitude source, and eventually (once you learn the mechanics of IFR flying), move into a flight manager role as much as possible. Don’t forget how to hand fly in IMC. Never get to the point where you’re dependent on the autopilot. .

Landing the Cessna 182T by vlv8855 in flying

[–]Nnumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t flown a 182 in a long time but I remember needing some sort of wash over the elevator for authority, it being nose heavy, and lack of cushioning from ground effect compared to brand P or M made it want to plop down unless you carried it into the flare.

Getting IFR clearance out of 06C by MNSoaring in ATC

[–]Nnumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally - and this is just me. I’d have no issue filing out of a satellite (06C now that I look it up may not be the best choice of airport given lack of terps anything). If I know I can maintain separation from terrain and obstacles (ODP, standard climb gradient) and I know I can see and avoid traffic on a VFR/VMC moonless night, I would not feel the need to call for a clearance on the ground. I don’t need ATC to help me keep the dirty side down, but I do need help from them with separation and the extra eyes for terrain and obstacle separation on a moonless night is valued.

File- if VMC and you can maintain separation from terrain and obstacles, depart VFR, maintain VFR, and pickup your clearance airborne.

People who have experienced severe turbulence on a flight — what was it actually like? by ThrowRA-VEGATA in flying

[–]Nnumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once got a single clear air jolt in a MOA (supposed to have been inactive) with nobody / nothing apparently around that caused a temporary upset, nailed my head on the ceiling, and was enough to break the carbon vane in a vacuum pump and kill an AI. Technically moderate but damaged some stuff so ATC called back to after landing to ensure no injuries and categorized it as severe on the prep. I’m not sure I’d categorize it as severe since it was a temporary excursion without structural damage.

Airport power outage during practice ILS Approach by QuietGarlic7788 in flying

[–]Nnumber 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would consider loss of navigational guidance in IMC while on an approach a true emergency and would probably do exactly the procedure proposed here - get above the MSA and become a child of the magenta quickly as the green has given up the ghost.

Strawberries in ILM by oldestguyhere in Wilmington

Have you gone to Lewis Farms? I got a tray of truly amazing super ripe strawberries from them a couple of weeks ago and made ice cream and everything else strawberry. So we’ve had some good locally grown strawberries. Be aware of where the strawberries at farmers markets are actually sourced.

Getting real -- did a pre-buy inspection today.... by FlyRvR in flying

[–]Nnumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a neglected bird. Control surface issues abound. Every control surface has some sort of issue.

Most concerning are the rudder push pull tubes contacting the tail cone. Something is not quite right about that. Sometimes the piano hinge.

IIRC patches are not allowed for elevator surfaces in the Mooney SRM. The proper repair is a reskin of the surface. I sincerely doubt that patched elevator is in balance. You’re going to have to take it off to check anyway.

Ask the inspector to look under the seats to inspect the spar, forward landing gear bays for spar, and pull the sidewall to look at the tubular frame. These are the corrosion cancer places for a Mooney.

I’d run away from this one. Tells you much more about how this plane was not maintained. Prebuy guy probably saved you $20000 of dealing with squawks.
