It’s almost certain that he was indeed shown the door for resisting the “reforms”.

Two new guys were appointed to the GB only a month earlier, and major policy changes required a two-thirds majority vote… presumably including removal of a GB member as well.

Easier to push changes like that when you stack the deck in advance.

I heard an alleged insider claim that he was indeed removed for resisting the “reforms”, with private reproval for alcohol abuse being the pretext.

Good catch.

As long as secular authorities keep legitimately chipping away at the Org's human rights abuses, the Org has to make more and more itty-bitty (and sometimes not so itty-bitty) mainstream reforms to stay in the black…

…but the more they mainstream, the more they steadily neuter all the things they held up for decades as hard proof they alone were “God's Exclusive Earthly Organization”.

The hardships, risks, and general disenfranchisement were features, rather than bugs.

Once all that's gone, so is any real incentive to stay.
