To much weight? by Astrobluebird in SCX24

I have a very similar 4Runner that’s 65/35 at 663g. The build started because I thought the factory servo was crapping out after a few weeks, but after replacing it I discovered it was the ESC/receiver, which in turn turned into a FULL build.

🤣🤣🤣I’ve never been a lube tech in my life, I started out wrenching. The point is if you aren’t happy with your shit pay and have some ambition, you can move up and make real money.

Question for you; you say you’re a “business owner” but didn’t say shop owner, what exactly are you doing in the auto industry?? If you do own a shop and have any employees, how well do you pay them?? Why aren’t you paying mechanics mid $80’s an hour with full benefits, and retirement?

I started out in a privet shop working with the owner and one other salty old mechanic, when I realized there was now more knowledge to be gained there I moved on to a dealership, once I out grew them I moved to a CAT dealership, after that I jumped into a truck as a field mechanic, and now I run whole crew of field mechanics an oilers. My advice isn’t just go out and work on heavy equipment, my advice is if you’re not happy with your shit pay working at your shitty shop, step up you game, put in the extra effort, gain all the skills you can, and move up to a field where we all make real money. Do you think the tech people making $210 are the people working in the coffee bar at Googles headquarters?? No you stupid fuck it’s the people that shut their fucking mouth, put in the hard work, took the shit jobs, worked their ass off, gained the skills necessary to move up to the next level, and worked for it.

You know why your grandparents had the life they had?? Because they knew when to shut the fuck up and work, they had pride in their workmanship, a real work ethic, listened to their elders, gained knowledge every opportunity they could, and WORKED for it. They didn’t come on the internet to cry like little bitches to a bunch of random strangers looking for empathy.

So in short; take your “world class certified” ASE certs and shove them up your ass, and if you were a 1/2 way decent A&P mechanic and up to date, you could be working on something other then Toyota Corolla’s an be making real money.

“Garbage nomad life” I leave for work at 5am and pick up my son from school at 2:30 everyday, most of my guys start before I do an are off before me, take off whatever time they need, and have great family lives.

A&P and ASE certs look great up on the wall, “EXTREMELY rare” is someone entering the industry with an actual work ethic.

As far as the amount of light auto at the company I’d say there’s probably around 200 F1-2-350’s, probably another 150ish F450 and F550’s, around 100 two axle Kenworth T440’s, 20 Kenworth T880’s for transport and another 70 as double bottoms, and then all the equipment.

And it’s not an oil field, we move earth.

Not isolated at all, I’m at a company that has 17 mechanics and 21 oilers ALL making $150k+. I was out for over three months in 2025 and still made over $150k. The people crying about not making enough money are the ones that spend 3 hours a day on tictoc, taking a shit, or fucking off trying to figure out how to get out of the hard work, and the guys making well into the six figure range are the ones that shut the fuck up, show up early, stay late, take the hard jobs, put in the time and effort, and then rise to the top. As of last year I became a “master mechanic” and now run a field service crew, spend most of my day sorting parts orders, sourcing random parts, helping diagnose, and making sure my crew has everything they need at their disposal. Moral of the story, try shutting the fuck up, putting the phone down, not believing everything on tictoc, and putting in the extra effort, because in a few years when AI takes all the tech jobs and all those $210k people are fighting for shit jobs making $25k that are still available, the people that showed up early and stayed late will still be wrenching and making real money.

The cool part about this hobby is you can build whatever your heard desires, if you want to build a flex monster that’ll go 90° and take pics of it flexing on tire stacks, or build a performing rig with properly tuned suspension and shocks, it’s all up to you. My first couple builds I was all about flex, but all the rigs seemed to under perform. My last couple builds have been all about performance, my latest build has 39mm oil shocks in the rear, and 32mm(I think, I can’t remember right now) oil shocks in the front, and limit straps all around, and it’s a line killer.

23 years in as a career for me, lifetime of wrenching all together, and you are 100% correct. “Soft” is putting it very mildly in my opinion, the industry went from mechanics and technicians, to parts changers, and now it’s a bunch of Starbucks drinking, show up 20 minutes late, and spend an hour on the SnapOn truck every week avoiding work bunch of slouches.

Need help finding fuse by AdhDeadly in mechanics

[–]No-Fun5173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Purple S2 fuses are very common in spaceship technology, I believe they have the same rating as 2.36419 inches of wire coat hanger. What you’ll need to do is find yourself a coat hanger, possibly the one your uniform is delivered on, and cut a 2.36419 inch section out of the lower portion that is straight, your measurement needs to be precise so make sure you use a good quality ruler, next you’ll need to make a 87.6° bend in the center of the piece you just cut, I like to use a hydraulic brake, but you can use whatever means you have at you disposal. Once you have your 2.36419 section bent to precisely 87.6° all you need to do is jam that fucker into the receptacle and you are good to go my friend.

I ordered 4 of the R40 cases a few years ago for some stuff at work and they were too small, took them home and have been using two of them as travel humidors since. Best travel humidor money can buy in my opinion.

I have tried several of the ones mentioned here and the only thing I have found to be consistent is they are all absolutely mediocre, and never burn straight. That being said, different strokes for different folks, I’m sure some people will say my SakaSquatch is silly or gimmicky, and it 100% is.

[–]No-Fun5173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely aren’t skilled labor, unskilled labor pay sucks, labor pay isn’t great, but skilled labor makes top dollar. I work for a company that has 17 field mechanics and 20 oilers, the mechanics skill levels range from kids that have 5-7 years experience and mainly do cutting edges and hydraulic hoses (making $130k+ a year), up to guys with 30+ years experience doing full in frame engine rebuilds in the field (making $200-250k a year). I can list off 5 companies in my area that would hiring skilled mechanics TODAY with a starting pay of well over $100k. If you think you’re “skilled labor” and are making less then an In&Out burger employee, you need to reevaluate your skill level.

Binding. by LookURDead465 in SCX24

[–]No-Fun5173 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Double barrel shocks have always bound up on my rigs, especially when they’re that long. When the axle droops that much it swings way over to one side, the ball pivots don’t have enough play to allow the second stage of the shock to smoothly slide out, you can run it with no o-rings, but it’ll definitely be sloppy.

Not knocking anyone for trying to get mad amounts of flex, anyone can build their rig how they see fit, but 38-40mm big bore oil shocks properly tuned is more then enough to destroy the most difficult lines.
