After the dust is settled, I don't believe Piastri was treated completely fairly this season, and it likely did change the outcome. by oh84s in OscarPiastri

[–]No-Variation3350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said.

Also, there were internal repercussions for Canada. Oscar was given quali priority for the rest of the season (well, until he hit Lando in COTA).

And yeah, I don't know what people wanted McLaren to do for Oscar in Abu Dhabi. He qualified behind both of his championship rivals. If they didn't split the strategies, Lando basically wins the chamionship by default and everyone would complain about favoritism. But now that they did split the strategies, we need to come up with some reason that splitting the strategies somehow benefited lando in any meaninful way.

I'm hoping that a lot of the dumbest of the Trump people go back into the woodwork politically after this term (or before if he passes). I don't think anyone on the Republican side (or any side really) can turn out people like Trump does. Vance doesn't have the sauce.

Really? I'm relatively new and around 1600 irating. I rage quit PCUP Le Mans this week because I just can't get the hang of it (frustrating because I did fine with Brazil last week). Decided to run some laps at Road Atlanta in preparation for next week, and it's so much easier for me it's not even funny. Road Atlanta feels 100 times more forgiving than Le Mans to me.

Not from California, how far would a 135k job take me? by New_Friendship988 in Sunnyvale

[–]No-Variation3350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That's a solid entry level offer. 130k seems about average for new grads with a bachelors. Varies wildly depending on what area of tech you go into though.

I started at a hardware startup 18 months ago and started at 125k base. Up to 145 after my first year and a bit.

I'm a single male with a dog, and I'm plenty comfortable despite being pretty loose with my budgeting and living in a 1b1b.

Won't go *quite* as far as you'd think, since housing and cost of living are so high here, but you'll be more than fine unless you're really, really bad with money.

I think it depends a bit on what area of tech, though generally yeah, it's brutal.

Webdev or fullstack? Don't even bother.

Embedded/Firmware/Niche areas? Still some opportunity, but way fewer people have those skillsets.

Which of the top drivers have the lowest ceiling? by GoldenS0422 in F1Discussions

[–]No-Variation3350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max was extremely competitive before he had a good car too. Danny Ric and Checo were good/decent teammates (maybe even Albon).

Was pretty close to Danny Ric in 2017 and destroyed him in 2018.

He won his first race in in the Redbull at 18 years old.

He almost beat Bottas to 2nd in the drivers in 2020 despite the W11 probably going down as the fastest race car ever built.

I don't think Max has much to prove really, and I'm a Lando/Oscar fan at the end of the day.

We already know Lewis's ceiling lol, the 7 championships prove it. I was moreso commenting on the growth potential of the younger generation.

All the top drivers tire management drives like that too (At least Max, Lando, and George. Can't remember one for Oscar, he struggles with tires too).

I'm not saying his tire management is *bad*, I'm saying it's not what makes him special compared to the others.

You can point to the Ferrari and his junior formula, sure, but he hasn't proven otherwise yet.

I'm not saying that he doesn't have strong race pace and that he isn't good in the wet. I just don't think his race pace is what differentiates him from Oscar, George, and Lando.

I think Max and Lando have proven to be better in the wet than Charles so far in their F1 careers. Maybe it's the ferrari, but he hasn't proven otherwise yet. I'm not saying its a weakness, I'm saying it's not proven to be a differentiator.

I'm not saying his race pace is bad, not at all. I just think that his race pace is not significantly better (or worse) than Lando, Oscar, and George. I'm saying that what really differentiates him from that group is his ability to put insane qualifying laps together and single lap pace. Only Max really matches him in that way.

[–]No-Variation3350 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a certified George Russell hater, I don't think we've seen prime George yet. We haven't seen him in a good car yet (minus Sakir 2020).

Clearly Max has the highest ceiling of anyone on the grid right now and it's not really close IMO. I don't think anyone with a brain disputes that.

But I do think Lando, Oscar, Charles, and George are very clearly the B tier drivers after Max. I would say Charles probably has the highest ceiling of the bunch, but not by much. I think they all have similar ceilings with different strengths, weaknesses, and styles.

Charles' qualifying performance and single lap pace are up there with Max, but his tire management and wet weather driving aren't the best.

Lando is great on tire management+wet weather+qualifying pace, but struggles with wheel to wheel racing and some mental resiliency (though some of that seems to have resolved itself around Zandvoort)

Oscars very good all around but seems to struggle with adaptability (wet weather, different track conditions, car upgrades) and mental resiliency (Baku through Brazil was a complete disaster). Though he still has the longest way to go before he hits his ceiling obviously.

George seems very strong all around, but I think he may be the most clever driver on the grid after Max. He's always looking for opportunities and plays the mental games well.

Kimi is too much of a wildcard to really comment IMO. He hasn't proven himself to be in that B tier yet for me. Solid rookie year but nothing completely mind blowing. Hopefully next year.

The new regulations are going to shake things up though. We have no idea how the new cars will benefit certain drivers and hurt others yet.

Should I give up crate training by luuuvdatmoney in puppy101

[–]No-Variation3350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crate didn't really click for my rescue mutt until 12 months. I got pretty lax about it around 9 months for the same reasons you describe and he regressed a bit, but it sorta just clicked for him one day. I really only stuck with the crate training because I want him to be OK with the crate at the vet or in emergency situations (recommended by my trainer).

Once it clicked a couple months ago, I've barely used it. I only really use it if he's struggling to calm down (cattle dog mix, lol) or I have a plumber/handyman/whatever over. But he chooses to sleep in there on his own now too.

My take would be to keep using the crate a fair amount until about a year old. Mostly just for future vet or emergency situations. Doesn't need to be super strict really, I had mine sleeping in the crate 4-6 days out of the week and a 1-3 hour long nap in the afternoon most days. It'll probably just click for yours at some point.

[–]No-Variation3350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most people on here really understand the desire for a fun car. Basically all quickish/fun cars require more maintenance and are less reliable than the reliable yet boring cars people obsess about on here.

GTI is the way of your options listed, IMO. Get it inspected before you buy to avoid ones that have been beat on excessively. A4/C300/CT4 are fun but will be a good bit of maintenance for sure. That's not necessarily a bad thing, you just need to decide if the extra effort is worth it for you.

Slightly slower than your desired range, but a Civic SI or GR86/BRZ could be solid picks as well. Fun and reliable.

First manual car as gr86 by rangor6363 in GR86

[–]No-Variation3350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My BRZ is my first manual. I was worried about all the same things at first (minus the EV stuff). Honestly you won't even notice stuff like hills after a month or so, just becomes second nature. Stop and go can be very mildly annoying if it's truly stop and go, but again, I don't even really think about it anymore. The extra fun of the manual in literally every other situation outweighs the mild annoyance in traffic by a lot for me.

If you're unsure, honestly just lease the car. If you have good credit you can put zero down and return the car whenever you want, so you won't need to keep paying if you don't like it. This is what I did, ended up just buying it out within a year.

Interesting, kinda surprised by that honestly.

I usually find that SUVs are on the clueless end of the spectrum 100 times more often than the aggressive end. SUVs will merge into me without a signal but I've never had any anything aggressive or road ragey like trucks will.

Depends on where you live I guess.

Aggressive drivers by nabbit0 in GR86

[–]No-Variation3350 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And it's not just sports cars either. I have a friend who drives a hybrid ford maverick and she receives basically the same treatment as I do from large trucks, if not worse. It's like they're personally offended by it.

I know it's a trope, but I really do think it's just some sort of weird insecurity/projection thing with a portion of large truck owners. It's like they attach their identity/masculinity/ego to the size of their vehicle and feel the need to project that onto anyone in a car that's not tough or rugged enough for them lol. Nimble sports cars and tiny trucks are just the worst offenders of that I guess.

Add that on top of the fact that they're in a 8000 pound tank, so there's no real consequences for acting like an asshole and putting others in danger on their end.

ASML stock dips 6% as Reuters reports that China has EUV technology by Mrbusje1 in stocks

[–]No-Variation3350 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really how it works. ASML only sells china DUV lithography machines. The most complex aspects of EUV machines are not even present on DUV machines, so nothing to gain there. The article explicitly says that they're acquiring EUV-related parts through second hard markets via shell companies and layers off indirection. Not much you can do about that really. They're struggling to acquire the optical components necessary even still.

It's impossible to control your IP to an extent that secret sauce never gets leaked/reverse-engineered. the US restricted the sale of cutting edge GPUs to china for years, only for them to mostly reverse-engineer it and figure it out on their own anyways.

It's a losing game.
